Actually they do have conversations. Dont worry about feeding them gifts though. In 4.0 the conversations will unlock based on your progress through the class story instead of affection level. So if you have already finished your class story you will be able to blow through all the companion conversations right away before you enter the KOTFE story.

Not exactly. Let's say my friend John is Preferred. He has 6 characters so he has all of his slots full. He can buy 6 more slots which will give him a total of 12. At that point he will not be able to purchase another slot to go to 13. Now if he subscribes his default slots will increase to 12 and with his 6 purchased slots he will now have 18 slots. He can then purchase 4 more unlocks to bring him to a total of 22 slots. When his subscription ends his default slots will revert to 6 but since he has already purchased 10 slot unlocks he will have a total of 16.

On Rishi when you get the holocall from Satele she says "We have missed your input on the Council" which is meant to fit for both the Light Side Council member and the Dark Side "Special Military Advisor" non-Council member.
