  1. To PJbarlow (or whatever): Yeah, the game could be optimized more. And it will be... We aren't decrying that at all. But the game is not causing people's systems to overheat.

They are currently improving optimization. They have said that many times, "we are looking into the FPS issues".

I have already said that the game is poorly optimized and should be improved, but regardless it cannot and does not overheat computers that are operating properly.

I feel like I am reading Nineteen Eighty-Four here or something. This is double-think, purely and simply, and it is getting beyond a joke now.

You have both just said the game may have optimisation/framerate issues, you then immediately go on to say that there is no way this can cause problems unless your computer is faulty. If the game has issues, of course it is a possibility that those issues may be causing my problem.

  2. So its really not SWTOR's fault, some people just need better cooling, and swtor is showing them that.

And if the game is not destroying my card, but is heating it up much more than other games for seemingly no reason, despite my cooling performing exactly as it should?

Should the issue then not be investigated, to see if the game can be patched to produce the average amount of heat that other games (MMO or otherwise) do? Or should we ignore the issue, brush it aside, and let people's fans run at 100% for every minute of play time for no apparent reason?

Your card is more powerful than mine. Assuming you have adequate cooling for it, and are not over-clocking it, it should run TOR at max at even lower fan speeds and temps than I am (since I am running at max with a less powerful card).

Ergo my card is probably also running at a higher framerate than yours, or some other pure FLOPS-related function that causes it to generate more heat. Or maybe it's a simple optimisation issue. It could be anything, but the problem exists.

If your card is struggling and mine is not, then yours could quite possibly be defective. You're illogically dismissing the possibility.

Are you even reading what I am writing? For that matter, are you even reading what you are writing?

Firstly, I have said numerous times, my card is not struggling it is just getting much hotter than it does on average when gaming and the cooler is having to run a lot faster (and louder, hence my gripe) to compensate.

Secondly, I am dismissing no possibilities here. Not one. The only possibilities I have dismissed are those I have confirmed as being not possibilities, namely that my GPU or cooling solution is inadequate or faulty. I am perfectly capable of testing these things, and have spent days and days scratching my head trying to find the reason for this before questioning whether the game itself might be it.

Then you're right, it's not your cooling. Most likely your card is defective in some manner then. There is no reason for a GTX 580 to forced to run at 100% fan speed when a GTX 560 Ti is only running at 60%.

My card is not defective, and you're right, there's no reason for a GTX 580 to be forced to run at 100% fan speed. Ergo, let's look at the only game that coincides with the problem as a possible cause instead of dismissing it just because we don't like the possibility.

  3. Because that's whats actually happening, good lord look out for the AA option coming when these people are putting on 16x msaa with thier Dells.

So you think I am just here to somehow harm the game? Even though I enjoy the game a lot, and intend to play it for a long time to come? Are you that paranoid?

Nope, I can say it for a fact. ;)

The very FACT that I'm running on a card that is less powerful with stock cooling options and my fan tops out at 60% proves the FACT that the game is not causing any overheating issues.

A more powerful card would be able to run the game on max even more efficiently than mine. So that means:

    1) Your card is defective

    2) You have inadequate cooling

    3) There is some other issue

Firstly; you're not even using the same card I am. Secondly; neither of us knows what the root of this issue is, so neither of us can say "for a fact" what is going on.

    1. My card is not defective, if I thought you were serious about this I could Furmark it for twelve hours, just for you, to prove that it's not. But I don't believe you are serious about this, I think you're just here to talk down to people you think are simply "haters" trying to harm the game.

    2. My cooling is not inadequate, in fact the cooling is fulfilling its job perfectly by running at 100% fan speed to cope with the extra heat. The problem is that there's no reason for this game to run my GPU fans like Furmark, when no other games make it work at over 60% or so like your own.

    3. Yes, and failing to find anything wrong with my own system, I suspect that issue is something to do with the game. Software can force components to work harder than they need to, example of this are Intel Burn Test and Furmark. As I have already said, Starcraft II had a problem that caused excessive GPU heat, and was patched to fix the problem.

But hey, you seem to just want to act like I hate the game or something and am here just to make it look bad. That's very grown up of you.

LOL not even close to running like that, If you can run a Furmark burn in for more than 5 min I'd love to see it.

My system is IBT and Furmark stable, it's not even overclocked, so why do you simply presume otherwise in such an antagonistic manner? Why are you acting so utterly childish and unconstructive? What exactly is your agenda here other than to act like I'm some sort of "hater" who is "out to get" your game?

Just pretend for one moment that this isn't a problem with my PC, no matter how small you think the chances of that are. Would you really want a problem like this to go untreated forever, while complaints build up on the forum and spread their way around the internet? It sounds to me like you're the one who wants to harm the growth of this game.

  4. No, GPU utilization is independent of overheating. Sure you may only notice overheating at higher utilization, but you should NEVER be overheating, and therefore utilization is not the problem.

Its like saying please turn down the sun so that my car doesn't overheat, when you should just fix your car.

Even if they improve optimization, which they will, people with lower end cards will still run at 100 percent, so if they still do not improve their cooling their problems will not be fixed.

The real issue is cooling, not optimization, in regards to overheating.

if this were a thread about FPS, then the issue would be optimization.

The thing you're missing is that my system is not "overheating" in the sense that the game is going to break it, mainly because my cooling system is working optimally and as intended.

My problem is that the GPU is being heated up to an unreasonable level when compared with other games and is forcing my GPU to become excessively loud to correct it. While my cooling solution is more than adequate to cope with it, there is no logical reason for this game to behave like Furmark.

Software can indeed do this, Starcraft 2 had this problem before it was fixed. Software like Intel Burn Test and Furmark is designed to do this. Let's not pretend software can't get a GPU pretty toasty.

  5. There's 2 main reasons for overheating in SWTOR.

    1. The WoW crowd is playing on thier Dells.

    2. It's a new game ppl are marathoning it 20hrs and wondering why thier comps are getting hot.

Here's some things that aren't happening simply because it's impossible.

    1. SWTOR is not frying GPUs.

    2. SWTOR is now slowing down fans.

How is this sort of ad hominem nonsense even remotely constructive?

Do you think I am here just to tarnish the reputation of a game I enjoy? Why are you rushing to defend it this way, by insulting anyone who has a concern or complaint?

  6. You have a reasonable request. Improve optimization to lower GPU utilization. But this thread is about heat. There are other optimization threads.

You don't see the connection? At all?

I can't suggest what to do, since I don't have access to your computer. All I can say for a fact is that TOR is not causing your heat issues.

A bold claim, a very bold claim. You cannot say this "for a fact" though, can you. Nobody can say that, not unless Bioware and Nvidia launch some sort of inquiry in to this, and that is not going to happen.

No, all you can do is speculate, just as all I can do is speculate as to how The Old Republic behaves almost like Furmark on my system, and I think I'm in a better position to determine if there's something wrong with my own system than you are.

  7. O.o

    Are you serious?

My card is less powerful than yours, my case has less cooling options, and I'm running TOR at max with my fan speed at 60%. I just proved to you that the game has absolutely nothing to do with your overheating problems.

My card is more powerful than yours, which is why it belts along at 110fps. Unless you're asking me to cap the FPS, and stop making use of the 120Hz monitor I spent my hard-earned money on, what do you suggest I do?

Other than asking Bioware to look at their GPU optimisation, of course.

  8. The thing is they're actually running thier Acer that they bought at Office Depot and crammed a GPU in there running off a 250w PSU, all with stock cooling and then max the settings and play for 20 hours and wonder why thier computer is getting hot.

No one that has even a beginning knowledge would be posting ridiculous specs and making these claims if those were thier actual specs.

If you're not having the problems yourself then how can you be so sure? You sound like you are having a knee-jerk reaction to defend the game against, what, people you perceive as some sort of threat to its reputation?

I know just a little tiny bit about about computers (understatement). I am using a GTX 580 with the stock dual-fan cooler it came with (I have been planning to replace it with a Zalman but I simply do not have the time lately), I am using a Lian Li case with more than adequate cooling. My GPU does not approach dangerous temperatures but the fans on it speed up to pretty much max keeping it cool in this game, they don't in any other game.

If this wasn't happening to a lot of people it wouldn't be posted about so much, this is the second thread I have seen today. Not everybody is just some computer illiterate child or some sort of rabid "hater" who wants to give a boo boo to your favourite new game.

  9. i am convinced people confuse instancing with shards.

    Instancing = green doors.

    shards = Coruscant (1) and Coruscant (2)

I want the latter to go away, but from what ive read, it seems people want the former gone as well, and i think the former is a much welcomed addition.

The game calls "Dromund Kaas (1)" etc. instances itself, just so you know.

Both are instances, the word "shards" actually traditionally refers to servers.

  10. that instancing was introduced into the beginning of the game to handle the stress of having lots of people playing at the same time at launch right? and they are going to be lowering instanceing soon. So please don't complain about the instancing. And no this is not a troll.

Source please. As much as I would love instancing to be reduced or removed entirely, I got the impression it's been there through every testing version of the game that was open to non-staff.

  11. From what I've seen on occasion because I have hillbilly internet the world is layered and it takes time to load all the layers.

Even though I'm using a 50mbps connection I presume this is the case. If you look closely at the load screen it leaves a couple of pixels uncovered at one side, it's only a couple of pixels wide but you can tell that the game is under there, so I can only assume the load screen is in fact a "we're hiding the game because alt-tabbing de-renders everything" screen.

It reminds me of how Star Wars Galaxies used to build the world right in front of you if the load screen glitched on you after using a shuttle.

Anyway I am using an i5 2500K and 8GB RAM, I too think the loading is a little long.

  12. I´ve been with WoW from the first day, joined Warhammer, Aion and Rift within release or shortly after, but...

    Rift

Surely you're not serious, haha. Rift? The first MMO in history to basically require a Core i5 or Phenom X6 CPU to run on full settings and maintain >30 FPS because of the nonsense way the developers threaded graphics functions on the CPU.

You must be pulling my leg. I've got friends running this game maxed out on HD 5850s and dual-core CPUs from 2008. Yeah, the performance is inconsistent a lot of the time, but when I am getting 110 FPS I don't notice a drop of 10 FPS.

Don't even get me started on Aion.

  13. Where is this notice that you speak of? Splash screens and forums don't count, only in game explanations matter for story based restrictions.

I whip this one because the focus was on story, but is being converted into grinding. I want them to redact the changes that lean towards grinding and go back to story.

To be fair it does say on the tooltip for the crystals what alignment they require.

  14. Most doesn't mean all, and that would justify a FACTION based restriction, not alignment.

Yeah all would be a faction restriction, most justifies an alignment restriction. You might as well be asking why not all Jedi can use Vapaad lightabre form, or force chokes, because a couple of light side Jedi have done it against the approval of the vast majority.

Heh, did you read the description for compressed crystals. The writer has no understanding of lightsaber mechanics. The blade weighs *nothing*. All the lightsaber's weight is in the hilt. Having a thinner blade means squat in this regard.

A source is cited. Wizards of the Coast source book for the RPG, which is overseen by LucasArts.

  15. So your fan is spinning faster, and still isn't maxed? What is the issue here, fan noise? What are the temps now? What are te temps if you set your fan to max speed?

I have not been monitoring the temps because I have the system set to alert me if it breaches my 100C threshold, and I know my cooling solution will never let it reach that. The problem is indeed fan noise, and I don't feel like replacing my cooling solution with an even quieter one just because one game pushes the GPU temp up that high, I'd like Bioware to optimise things better.

And what is with the personal attack? I have not replied to a single post of yours, to my knowledge. Not even sure why I'm replying to this to be honest...

I'm just tired of seeing you talking down to people so much, someone needs to put you in your place. You probably don't even realise how patronising you're being, makes me feel embarrassed to be a "tech-head" when I see my fellows acting like that (and it's common).

Feels bad to be talked down to the way I talked to you, doesn't it. Take note, because now you know how others feel when you talk to them like they're idiots.

  16. That's why I said "ABSOLUTELY NO DETAILS!"

A lot of people don't even know Revan is in the game, genius.

You've already made a huge spoiler with your title. Way to go.

  17. Why don't you go to a private server that hosts launch WoW. Look at the items. Especially raid armor.

Then come back here and compare. It will be hilarious.

You mean it's hilarious that a company can't learn from stuff seven years in the past, right? Right?

I love the game but itemisation makes no sense, it shows all the signs of a first attempt at an MMO.

  18. So... exploiting and getting away with it is okay then?

Do straw man arguments just come naturally to people on this forum?

No, I didn't say "exploiting and getting away with it is fine". I said "people who exploited have had a formal warning, and the economy won't be damaged anyway".

Must mean that selling an Orange chespiece with no mods in it by 300,000 is fine. Everybody has that amount in pocket cash.

If you understood how MMO economies work, you'd realise why what you said was hilarious. Being able to put orange items on the GTN at all will do much more damage to the crafting economy than any amount of exploiting will, and expect to see them flagged as unsellable on the GTN in the future when people wise up to it.

I love this game but the economy is tiny, and a joke. I still think people are only upset because the exploiters are richer than them.
