  1. People, in their ignorance, are using 'shard' to refer to two entirely different things; one referring to 'worlds' and the other referring to 'pseudo instancing' of zones within a world.

This thread is littered with posts using one term for two entirely different and unrelated technical aspects of the server system TOR uses.

This irks me too but it doesn't take any conscious effort to simply look at the context of their statement to immediately be able to tell whether they mean a server/shard or instance/phase.

  2. Even with shards, I still find myself waiting a long time. I wouldnt mind, but it happens A LOT on my server. I ALWAYS see people around me, all the time. I guess since I level at the same speed as everybody else due to work and responsibilities. I am only level 32, Alderaan was pretty busy when I was there. I even saw a dozen guys on the imperial side (not all at once, but they were all different names).

Would love to play on your server then, maybe we should swap, because I am on the highest population RP server on the Euro list and I never see anyone despite it always being "very heavy" load at peak.

  3. I like the sharding system. General chat works across all shards, so it doesn't affect grouping and I can actually complete quest without tripping over 50 other people working on the same quest. I can log on my 50 shadow put out a call on general to complete my daily heroics and get on with the rest of the day.

Leave it alone, Bioware. Your system is fine

Seriously, how often does this happen in other MMOs outside of world events and new content patches or expansions? How often do you still care five minutes later?

  4. 4. I am more powerful by far. I know its not conclusive, by my main is a sage, and I rolled a sith Assassin. I got higher crits on my lvl 10 assassin than I ever did with my lvl 50 sage. This blew me away. (With bolster during pvp)

Why not compare sage and sorcerer instead of two entirely different advanced classes?

The assassin/shadow is supposed to be a massively front-loaded glass cannon, the sorcerer/sage is supposed to to be a highly versatile mastermind with tons of CC and shields. Of course one of them is going to do more raw DPS than the other, but I bet a good sage player who knows how to use their CC and shields would run rings around your assassin (and vice versa).

  5. I've not read the thread but I am just posting my 2c.

In short: I agree, I think we're at the point where there's a nice spread of people at different levels now and not everyone is camping k'lor'slugs in the tomb of Ajunta Pall. I often find myself going nearly an hour without seeing anyone now, let's lose the phasing.

I'm 95% sure that 95% of the posters here don't have any "shards" on their servers. The explanations are provided in posts before mine, but just wanted to give it a push in the right direction.

If you do have a shard, you can check it by opening your map - if your area has a (1) or (2) number after the name, then you have shards. If it just says "Hoth" then it's the only shard on your server and can't help if theres only 2 players.

If it helps I play on the most populated European RP server and there's generally two phases on the planets I've been to so far. So yeah, I'm not just playing on a dead server with nobody around.

  6. I must have slept during the zombie part of EP 1-6. Kotor you say? Its like speaking about Terminator film lore with terms of Sarah Connor Chronicles. Just wrong, horrible wrong.

Haha, are you serious or what? I can't tell.

Anyway, as people have said, Rakghouls are more like werewolves than zombies, but the fact is they're neither. They're Rakghouls. No, they're not entirely original, but since werewolves and zombies weren't Sith bio-weapons they're not the same thing.

  7. I'm with you friend, sometimes I just stop to look around while I'm playing and realise I've only seen four people in the last hour.

It's not even like there's oodles of extra instances, it seems like there's usually 100 in one and 20 in another. Surely they can just say "**** it" and set the instance capacity to 99999 because an extra 20 people is hardly going to make a difference.

I know a lot of people will say "well it stops people stealing my mobs/resources", but come on, how often does that really happen in other MMOs and when it does how often do you still care five minutes later?

Instancing is used to balance server loads and reduce lag. Considering the amount of performance issues this game already has, there is no way in hell they will reduce instancing or zoning.

I rarely break 40ms on my server, it's usually in the low 30s, and I'm talking about peak time in the most populated places. If you can show that different instances of the same zone are hosted on different servers and not the same one, I'd love to see it, otherwise it just seems to me like it's only there to keep people "out of each other's hair" and wouldn't affect latency at all.

  8. I, too, was once very hyped for this game, but I stop short of calling myself a 'fanboy.'

I wouldn't be foolish enough to get involved with the irrational praising of a game.

    Just irrational bashing, then?

I mean... I have problems with this game, some pretty annoying ones, but if I hated the game as much as you clearly do (judging from your posting history) I'd just quit and not look back.

I've quit numerous MMOs now, probably more than I could list off the top of my head, and each time I just leave quietly. If I feel I really must have my say about the game before I do I will send an email directly to the developer because, it's not like the devs will read your rants, mods tend to just lock "I quit" threads.

So take the hint. You already seem to have decided you won't be here when the first billing period begins, be the bigger man and just put the game out of your mind instead of endlessly trolling this forum because there's nothing else to fill your time. Surely getting your guild's raid or PvE progression up on WoW should make you too busy to troll this much.

  9. D3 doesn't take a subscription and is still a Blizzard game. If you purchased the 12-month sub for WoW, you get D3 free along with a guaranteed beta entry. Most people who play WoW and are interested in D3 purchased that 12-month sub, meaning that WoW's subs will not be dented.

Wait, wait, I'm seeing one of Xugos' mystical correlations here.

The tea stain in the bottom of my cup is telling me that Xugos paid a year up front for WoW to get D3, and now he's doubting if he'll play WoW that long when it turns in to panda land. That's why he is trolling here instead of playing the game he actually likes, and forgetting he ever had the displeasure of playing this one.

The logic follows, no matter how weak and tenuous the connections, according to Xugos' methodology I must be utterly correct.

  10. The likely reason is that he interpreted the statistics wrong, now it's been pointed out that he has done that, he has realised his error, yet still feels he needs to blindly defend his case.

He hasn't realised his error, he still has complete faith that he has made no statistical or reasoning errors. It's easy to see from his posting history.

Some people just really really want this game to die and, apparently, have nothing better to do than troll the forums until their subscription runs out. Who knows, maybe he'll re-subscribe and keep playing the game just to continue trolling the forums, because it's not like I've not seen people do it before in MMORPGs.

  11. My actual data is over-all activity, which is, logically, correlated to the number of subscriptions and over-all player interest in the game.

    Correlation does not imply causation.

Not that you have even shown how concurrent users correlates to subscriptions as far as The Old Republic is concerned, because you don't know how many subscriptions there are to start with.

  12. Where did you read that? Because they specifically said that you don't need to redownload/reinstall it.

I clearly remember seeing some sort of message somewhere telling people to delete the beta client and install the retail client, it might have been on the screen where you input codes, secret questions and whatnot for your account.

Anyway, I did so, and my performance is pretty much the same as in beta but my GTX 580 runs a bit hotter.

  13. You mentioned AA setting, did I miss a post somewhere cuz the AA in the game as it is sucks.

Can anyone in th eknow shed some light on this for me? Seems NV CP override set to 32AA makes jack poodoo of a difference compared to 2x AA ...ugh

I can't speak for all Nvidia users but control panel forcing doesn't work for me at all on my GTX 580, I have to use the .ini tweak which works right up to 16x and beyond.

Catalyst Control Panel for ATI users reportedly works fine forcing AA though.

Enabling AA makes a huge difference IMO, If I had to pick between AA and High Res Textures for a patch, I'd take AA any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Since we can already force AA I think it's a false dichotomy.

  14. I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm not the least bit angry at this. I'm just disappointed and more than a little sad that we can't actual achieve the look that they sold me on :( I was really looking forward to seeing the game in all it's glory on my new PC.

Nah, you're not alone. I'm right there with you.

I'm not angry, I'm not about to quit over this or anything because I enjoy the game, I'm just disappointed that we've been fed a lot of pretty screenshots over the years (and are continuing to be fed them as recently as today) when, in reality, the game doesn't look anywhere near as good.

I'm using a GTX 580, it's a shame to see it being wasted on textures like these. I hope the improvements 1.2 brings are noticeable ones.

  15. Can we get a response as to why you are still marketing the game with textures and settings that are impossible to achieve with your live client?

See today's press pack at MMORPG.com for an example.

Urgh. I am happy to hear they are looking in to it, I am even happy to wait and see what they produce in 1.2 when it is eventually on the live servers, but this is a joke. No need for them to rub salt in to the wound by continuing to depict the game in this completely untrue manner.

The picture of the two Jedi and the trooper in that article made me  and I'll be disappointed if we're never able to play with that level of detail now that it's been advertised as such.

  16. That's very, very strange.

If it started after the Jan. 6th patch, then there's obviously some redundant processing or other form of poor optimization that happened. But it's disturbing that people with the same configurations are getting different results.

Try turning on Vsync and turning off Bloom to see if that has an effect.

I just gave vsync a go and it didn't actually do anything, my in-game FPS didn't change and Fraps was also recording the same old 85-110. I'll check the .ini file later today to see if the setting is actually enabling, and I'll also try bloom.

It's also worth noting that this problem has been going on longer than since the 6th for me.
