  1. WHY don't people get it?

This game was released in late 2011, its competitor is WOW late 2011 NOT WoW 2004. Think about it for a minute and let it sink in, if you are even able to do that. Seriously.

All MMOs have a "vanilla" stage.

World of Warcraft is the only MMO in the last seven years to really get out of it's vanilla stage.

Everyone else dumps a new MMO either because the vanilla isn't exactly like WoW, or it's genuinely bad.

It's really, REALLY hard to release an MMO that has as much content / features as WoW does.

  2. Who the cares about gamespot. They sold out years ago and I don't trust them for a review. Only thing that's worth looking at gamespot is to see which old games are best or all time best games.

Gamespot lost most of their credibility when they fired Jeff Gerstmann for not giving Kane & Lynch a better score.

On that note, I think it's terrible that they gave TOR an 8, but gave Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, RIFT, and WoW's Cataclysm 8.5's.

It's a big difference. Most people don't get an MMO unless it's mean review is 9.0, because everyone is looking for the next World of Warcraft unfortunately.

  3. Well you can say the same thing about any RPG, lets take KOTOR for example. After you finish the story line the game ends and you need to make a new char or stop playing it. That isn't really a waste of time is it?

Yeah, but this is an MMORPG...

You need things to do when you hit level 50.

Leveling alts shouldn't be the "hook" of your game.

  4. Basically, I've finished my class quest, which I have to say was a pretty good story. People complain about the story sometimes, but I honestly don't see where they're coming from at all. In fact, I've gotten my character to look dang near perfect the way I want them to look. Dual red sabers, matching dark armor for my dark side character, they look like a real hero of sorts.

My problem is that I basically feel as though this character is "finished". After you do your class quest, all of the magic in the game kind of sinks out. Doing anything else, all the customized gear goes out the window and my character gets all ugly and unsatisfying, throwing out all the work I did leveling on gathering gear that I liked. And pvp is a joke with that pvp stat "expertise" basically ensuring that any 50 is god-mode compared to even the level 49 players. Really, the game just doesn't entertain me once you take out the story element. It's just a continuous grind to get... well, nothing that I really even want.

I feel like the only thing I can really do at this point is to just keep making alts and hope things change, but at the same time, if things don't change I don't want 3-4 level 50 characters in a game that I don't want to play at all anymore. It just seems like a waste of time.

It's got really weak endgame at the moment. I'm waiting to see what happens with their big content patch at the end of January.

Dissappointing, really. Anyone looking at reviews for MMOs knows that an 8.0 out of 10 is slightly near the "garbage" tier of MMORPGs.

    Sad really, but oh well.

    Other MMO reviews

    Aion : 6.5 / 10

    Age of Conan : 8.5 / 10

    Warhammer Online : 8.5 / 10

    WoW Cataclysm : 8.5 / 10

    RIFT : 8.5 / 10

All of these (with the exception of Cata) didn't make it past the initial 6/mo period, and it doesn't look like TOR will either.

Also, IGN gave TOR a 9.0 / 10, but we all know that was bought and paid for, right?

Reviews are only paid off if they're good reviews, right?

  6. The problem is that we have all been completely spoiled by another game engine that has had 7 years and over 100 million dollars every month in subscriptions at its peak to become finely tuned and polished.

Before we got so spoiled, the current condition of SW:ToR was more than acceptable for a newly released MMO. Back when WoW and EQ2 were first released, this was standard. We expected it. In either of those games, there were plenty of bugs, and when they released a new patch to fix 3 things, they usually broke 5 other things. Did we care back then? Nope. Sure it was annoying, but there wasn't anything out there that didn't have the same thing going on, so we just accepted it and had fun playing.

Now, we have become used to a nearly flawless game engine that is the product of years of work and a ridiculous amount of money. I'm simply referring to the game engine, not your opinion of the game content or design. I know we all like to hate on WoW. If we didn't, that's where we would still be. But lets face it, it IS the standard when it comes to MMO's, and it makes any new MMO look bad in comparison simply because no other newly released MMO could possibly launch with all the features and polish that the game engine has. That takes time and money.

Any MMO could reach that level of polish and stability. It's just up to the player base to stick with it and fund it. I think SW:ToR is a great game for just being released, and I think it has great potential to become even better... but only if we give it the time and the money to allow it to do so.

    /agree

  7. I usually didn't skip dialogue, I ran all flash points, did all of my daily space quests/WZ quests, and leveled my 3 professions to 400, and THEN I reached 50.

Are you saying I rushed there? I went there pretty slow.

I didn't say you rushed at all.

Maybe you've got more time to devote to the game, I dunno.

But in WoW, it always felt like the goal was just to level.

Pre-Cata I tried to take in the lore and story, but I could tell it was slowly becoming a jumbled pop-culture, Mary Sue mess.

At least in TOR I get a feel for the world around me, and I can at least pretend what I do matters.

Also, I never gave much thought to what my Troll Shaman's personality was, or even my Blood Elf Paladin.

I know all of my TOR toons inside out, and I can feel some level of involvement in their stories.

Transplanting that feeling from a single-player game to an MMO is a step in the right direction in my humblest of opinions.

  8. Absolutely wrong.

    It innovated:

    - Arenas. Cheap e-sports. Wow.

    - PvP in general through varied improvements. Yes, varied improvements are the name of the game, but there's still nothing special about it really. Classes are still very much "flavor of the month" with their constant nerfs

    - Attribute/Combat Support system. What?

    - The leveling process. Removed most of the grind. Ahahahaha(infinite loop)

    - Combat system - introduced a varying range of new things. Like? Just saying "new things" doesn't support your argument

    - etc. Nope

  9. OP,

If you truly are an investment analyst, I would just like you to know that if I received anything as poorly constructed, punctuated, spelled, and presented as your post, I would shred it, send it back to your superiors, and promptly ignore everything you had said.

You sound like a gamer who is using big words to try and justify your complaints about the game. You all but take credit for the demise of several games by advising against investing in their parent companies. When you do get down to your issues with the game, the arguments you present, which occasionally flirt with the edges of accuracy, scream little more than what is demanded daily in the forums by spoiled players who want their cake, their oompa loompas, and their free epic gear.

I agree the game is not perfect, but continually holding it up to World of Warcraft is comparing apples to oranges, or at least oranges to tangerines. WoW is a seven year old game that has grown, changed, and to many players, declined to the end of its viable lifespan. It now exists only to cater to the long-term players who in many cases only continue out of habit and the desperate hope that maybe the game will get better down the road. The only thing Blizzard has truly achieved is learning how to keep giving out just enough rewards so that the average player is satisfied, but adding new content frequently enough where last week's rewards just aren't good enough, so the player has to keep paying for newer and shinier gear. They keep dangling "soon" and "in development" in front of hopeful players who have lowered their expectations but keep their optimism that maybe it will finally improve.

SWtoR is not WoW. It never claimed nor tried to be. WoW is all about the destination. Get to the end. Raid. Get epics and achievements. PvP for better gear and then do it all again next season/expansion/patch. SWtoR has said from the beginning that it is about the journey, the story, and a different experience. Fully voiced NPCs, a story that places you in the heart of the campaign, and immersion into a world that feels like Star Wars without having to rely on previously established characters and events from the movies. WoW simply substitutes pop culture references for originality.

Expecting SWtoR to be everything to all players is unrealistic, especially as we are still within the first month since the game launched.

Aside from the "SWTOR is not WoW. It never claimed not tried to be", I agree with everything you said.

I also made the text "gold" because this post needs to be on a plaque somewhere.

  10. Maybe,

16 hour days and SWTOR grind ... spell check is low priority.

    Excuses, excuses.

Also, how can you be as advanced in the game as you claim and work 16 hour days?

You work 16 hours, I'm assuming it's a minimal half-hour commute there and back (bare minimum), so that's 17 hours a day, leaving for 7 more for sleep.

...how did you get this far in TOR again working 16 hour days?

  11. That sounds awesome. It reminds me of yesterday, playing my Jedi Guardian and really liking the look of the chest you get from Tython commendations and then hating the look of the orange one you get from the gree quests. I was trying to find an orange one on GTN for the look, but no luck. Seriously, just let me have a damn look I like BW!

This is the big thing that drove me away from WOW after 4 years.

    Again--Awesome!!!!

That makes me sad. I'm still very 'on the fence' with how long I'll play. I have school starting next week anyway, so I'll have to see what my time is like. Thanks for the post though. It really just makes me sad and frustrated that they droped something so cool for something so...average.

Welcome to MMORPGs... can I take your order.
