Am I the only person who remembers what MMORPG's were like before World of Warcraft got ahold of them? When having a high leveled character, decent gear, and good crafting levels meant something? FFXi comes to mind initially for me, but EQ, SWG, and several others were this way. WOW began the trend of production companies pandering to the masses and giving out the entitlement philosophy in MMO gaming in my opinion. Sure Blizzard made, and continues to make, a truckload of money out of it; more power to them. But i really am sick and tired of hearing people compare everything to WOW and what an "MMO" should be. There were games before that monstrosity came out that were far and away better at everything that the games started out as. Everyone has a different play style, some like to rush to endgame content, some like to take their time and explore, other still enjoy starting multiple characters to find every niche that the game can offer. It seems to me that many many people today have the entitlement philosophy about gaming...the "I pay for this so do what I want or else!" mentality. the developers of games have one goal in mind, to make money; always has been, always will be. There are a few companies out there that have a true love for gaming and the people who play them, Bioware, imho is one of them. They did not create a cookie cutter "WOW" type MMO for their players. They created a story based Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game that encompasses the back story of one of the world's most beloved and in depth science fiction fantasies. There will always be people who do not like certain game mechanics of any game that comes out. I personally think that today's MMO's are cheap imitations of what they used to be, because companies are too afraid to take a stand and say, "Hey, this is our game...pay for it if you want to play, move on if you don't like it. Our mechanics are well thought out and are set up for the gamer who wishes ti immerse themselves in a world that is not their own. It will take time, effort, and cooperation with other players to achieve to high end in this game. We are sorry if this offends some players but we will not succumb to the whining and moaning about every little aspect of a game because it makes it take too long, or is too difficult to do alone." Sadly, I do not think that we will ever see games like that ever again because they have been labeled "niche" games that only a small portion of what the gaming community has become. Long story short...too late i know, SWTOR, for what it is, is a great story driven MMO. It does have it's issues, and i believe that BW will start working on them in due time. They have been working on making sure that the servers can handle the one million plus subscribers that have already begun and for the anticipated growth of the game. Once they iron out the queues and the stability issues, they will start working on the nit picky things that every has been posting about in the forums and the tickets that are created. For what it is worth, they have created one of the most stable launches that I can remember ever being a part of. It can only get better from here. <end rant>
