It reminds me of one of one of my favorite movie scenes... O-Ren: You didn't think it was gonna be that easy, did you? The Bride: You know, for a second there … yeah, I kinda did. This sort of Monday morning quarterbacking by people who largely do not have the skillset to be commenting on how to change complex code in a complete and launched game is ultimately not useful to anyone. I doubt the BW devs are even listening to this, because I'm sure that they have experienced programmers who are intimately familiar with the game code who have been wracking their brains about this problem for months. Point of order, the Ebon Hawk is not full and has had only three periods in the last 30 days where it was full. What server should you pick? http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=465012 Welcome to Star Wars: The Old Republic, new player! In short, you have three major decisions to make about a server. 1. What server type? (PvE, PvP, RP-PvE, or RP-PvP) 2. What geographic area/language do you want? (US West for you) 3. What kind of population do you want, lower or higher? After that point, you've narrowed it down and can begin sleuthing around. Your first choice as a player is which server TYPE you want. You have a choice between PvP, PvE, RP, and RP-PvP. I suggest googling those terms to determine which one is best for you. This website has a pretty good overview, and it's also posted below. In short: PVP - Unless you're in a designated "safe zone" (capital worlds, starter worlds, a very few other places) you are flagged for Player versus Player combat and you can not turn it off. PVE - Unless you're in a designated "PvP zone" you can choose whether or not to flag yourself for PvP. RP - No mechanical difference from the base server type BUT the RP flag is likely to attract people that want to role play. Your next choice as a player is whether you want a higher or lower population server. You should make a strategic decision about whether you want to play on a higher-population server or a lower-population server. Both have advantages and disadvantages. HIGHER POPULATION SERVER PROs - lots of people, quick PvP queues, easier to find people to group with for ops and flashpoints, easier to find guilds, economy and GTN likely to be more active. CONs - may have to wait in a 5-10 minute queue at peak hours, may have to wait for objectives/bosses to respawn, chat windows may be noisy and full of idiocy LOWER POPULATION SERVER PROs - very few people so you are likely to get to know them, rarely have to wait in login queues, rarely have to wait on objectives/bosses to respawn, chat windows unlikely to get much action CONs - PvP groups are rare, harder to find people to group with for ops and flashpoints, economy might be stagnant, may be a lack of guilds and RP, if there are even a few people on the server you don't like it's hard to avoid them BW has started a free server transfers process to "destination" servers from "origin" servers (more information and opinion here, here, and here). "Origin" servers are likely to have very low populations. "Destination" servers have much higher populations. As of this time (6/29/2012) the transfers are one-way-only and are final. If you start on an origin server you can move to one single assigned destination server for free (or choose not to), and that's it. If you start on a destination server, you have no options to move at this time. There may be an option for paid transfers later. See the links above for more details. The best way to look at the recent status of the servers is to look at the server population trends on http://www.torstatus.net. The higher phi value means that the population is larger. Check out posts for that server in the SWTOR forums. Do the people that are posting seem like people you want to play with? These are forums that aren't moderated by the folks at SWTOR. If you're interested in RP servers, definitely check out http://www.swtor-rp.com 3. Find the social media outlets for that server. (Facebook, twitter, you tube). See if they're active and what's going on. 4. Get an idea of what guilds are like on that server. I'm right there with you. I only got to keep *one* name when I transferred my herd from Sanctum to Ebon Hawk. But you know what... I'm a roleplayer. I've played absolutely fantastic pen and paper games with the crappiest rules sets available. I've loved games that have the most wretched graphics ever. What goes on in my brain >>> what goes on on my tabletop, in my LARP, or in my computer. Change my name? Fine. I really liked that one. I've been using it for 4+ years in other games, LARPs, and table top games. Improvise, adapt, overcome. I'm creative enough to look at this as a golden opportunity to get out of the rut and to do something new and different. I'm trying a new take on things that I've never done before. Great roleplayers are fantatically creative. A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. Today is a good day to die... and to be reborn as something new and different... and maybe *better*! Step into that alternate dimension where things turned out a bit differently than they did last time. Worked for a lot of the movies/books/comic book heroes we loved. I mean, if the whole cosmology of Marvel and DC can change and re-invent itself every few years, so can we. And they're doing a lot more than just name changes, sometimes they change the fundamental *being* of a character (see for example, the new Spiderman reboot). Don't let foolish consistency, your comfortable rut, hobble you and keep you from doing something you enjoy. Be big-minded. You've got some misinformation, it appears... Here's the FAQ on transfers... http://www.swtor.com/support/helpcenter/5268 Here's how to transfer... http://www.swtor.com/support/helpcenter/5303 You can transfer as many characters as you like PROVIDED you end up with no more than 8 on the destination server. You can transfer them all one right after another without waiting. It may take up to 3 hrs to transfer, but in actual practice, it rarely takes more than 20 minutes. For each character you'll get email when the transfer starts and another one when it's complete. Don't log in to the game during the transfer process, because sometimes that messes things up. Clear out your GTN auctions and mail and guild bank (if you have one) before you transfer. Your bag and cargo hold will transfer over as-is. Paige
