  1. This is actually more annoying than someone helping with elite mobs (assuming that no help is actually needed). For example, a player pulls a group of four linked mobs expecting to get quest credit for four mobs. The because someone else rides by and takes a few pot shots at them before the player can tag all four of them, that player only gets quest credit for two of them and then has to spend extra time killing an extra group of mobs to get credit for the two that the "helpful" player stole. At least when people help on the elite mobs, provided that they at least wait until the person they are helping tags it, they aren't stealing it even if the "helped" player finds the help annoying.
  2. Oddly, I'm not bothered by this whole thing at all in GW2. Probably because there is nothing other players can do, even if they tried, to interfere with my quests in that game. It's only in games like SWTOR where people have to "own" the mobs to get credit for them that other players become a problem and begin interfering with each other. Incidentally, I did unexpectedly end up soloing a "skill" mob in GW2 over the weekend because there were no other players around in that area. So while the GW2 system wouldn't help so much for those who want to completely solo every mob for challenge, it is nice for those of us who are primarily irked about other players interfering with our quests. If we wished, we could pretend those other players don't exist as everyone goes about their own business. I really wouldn't mind if the GW2 system came to SWTOR. I doubt it would though since it would require too much revamping of the entire game.
  3. You are assuming the majority are grateful, but unless you have documented proof, it's an invalid statement. Many people are polite and do not wish to cause a scene even if they are irritated about it on the inside. Even if the majority are actually grateful, the tyranny of the majority is not an excuse to infringe upon the rights of the minority. The minority has the same rights to enjoy the game as you do. You are still the one choosing to interfere with other players, regardless of good intent. Not the other way around. Please be respectful and not label people selfish for not always welcoming your interruptions to their immersion and fun, even if you mean well. There is nothing wrong with asking if they want help, or at the very least, waiting until a person really is having actual trouble in a fight, rather than jumping in to help the very second after someone else starts an encounter. (When someone does *that*, I'll often just stop fighting and leave the area and come back for that quest another time. After all, if they want my mob that badly, they can have it.) I'm not the OP and I'm not mad, but I do sympathize with the OP's plight. The OP enjoys taking on difficult fights and trying to overcome a difficult challenge on his/her own. It's fun for them and is not selfish. The OP wasn't infringing on anyone else by wanting to fight a mob on his/her own.
  4. So it boils down to you being mad that some people like to play the game solo (or mostly solo), and by golly you're going to force your "help" onto these people whether they need it or not. How dare they want to enjoy the game in a different way than you do! This reminds me of those arguments back in the days of UO when PKs would argue on the forums that they had the right to exploit and kill anyone they pleased wherever and whenever they pleased, and if the carebears didn't like these acts of being social in an MMO, they needed to go play a single-player game. How dare they want to chop wood in the forest in peace!
  5. The issue is forcing your help on people who don't want or need it, not discouraging helpfulness in general. I can't count the amount of times people have interfered and jumped into my fights when I was barely even scratched, and even stealing half of the mobs in my encounter and delaying me from completing my "kill 20 xxxx" quests. If there are four linked mobs, and I attack them, then it is rude to come in and take half of them from me simply because I didn't spend extra time tabbing around to all four of them to make sure I get a hit in before some rude person jumps in and takes two of them out of a desire to "help" me when there are zillions of other mobs in the area. Why take mine? If I need your help, I'll ask for it. If you see elite mob kill me, then send me a tell asking if I'd like help during the next attempt. I'd probably say yes, but at least you asked first rather than assuming for me what I wanted. There are plenty of ways to be helpful to other players without being rude or interfering in their enjoyment. Remember that not everyone in an MMO has the same playstyle as you do, and people play MMO's for different reasons that aren't all the same as your reasons. Why not respect these differences rather than getting defensive that some people might not want your help forced on them just because you personally don't see anything wrong with it?
  6. So if I walk into a restaurant in real life, sit down at some stranger's table and "help" her eat her meal, then my reply only need to be that once she complains is that I was only trying to help her eat it faster so she'll have more time to spend on other things, and surely she realizes that we live in a social world and is *required* to be social with everyone 24/7 simply because she exists in the same world with them. If she still continues to be upset, then she is just being rude and anti-social. How dare she want to enjoy a nice meal by herself when there are other people right there in the same world who can help her eat it!
  7. So it's perfectly okay to ruin someone else's fun just because it's fun for you? If you like fighting with other players, get into a group with them rather than forcing your "help" on an unwilling victim whenever it pleases you.
  8. I've been playing various MMO's since Ultima Online first came out and have soloed in every single one of them. I've also played in groups numerous times, but I've been able to solo to at least level 20 in every game that actually had levels. There are plenty of ways to find groups in SWTOR. The new group finder is one of them. Also, unless you have decided to remain on a dead server, general chat is full of people forming groups on every planet I've visited. Join up with one of those, or form your own group. There are also the PvP warzones. Those are always in a group. I've probably grouped with other people every day because of those. Also as others have mentioned, if you're just blind inviting, then no wonder people wouldn't be accepting your requests. Many of us find blind invites to be rude and will decline them even if we would ordinarily agree to be in a group when actually *asked* first. There is almost nothing I hate more than going about my business and then having some nitwit I don't know rudely pop a box up in front of my face. I had group invites on auto-decline until I'd keep forgetting to turn it off before planned invites.
  9. This has a ring of truth. From all of these posts and threads complaining about how they are *completely* ineffective in recruit gear while I'm sitting there puzzled because my mostly recruit gear character has been doing just fine in most cases, I've been trying to figure out the reason for the difference in my experience vs. theirs. Is it because they played just a couple or three 10-49 warzones before moving up to 50, and then found out they had to use more strategy at 50 vs. just running into a group of reds headlong, and then complaining because they can no longer just rush in blindly and directly slaughter everything in sight and not have to depend on teamwork so much? Gear only goes so far without practice and coordination.
  10. I am single with no kids, and do not plan on getting remarried in the future, so my time is my own outside of my full time job. I do some other activities besides gaming, and have a house/yard to manage, so I don't spend all my free time with games, but I also don't have to be overly concerned with other people's priorities and feeling guilty about whether or not I am pleasing them. I have always been a responsible person for the most part, so I do not have issues with neglecting necessary responsibilities. I also don't watch any TV outside of a Netflix DVD or streaming movie. People tend to waste a lot of time with the TV.
  11. I think this happened to me a couple nights ago. I saw a marked target and was attacking it thinking she was one of the healers, but then it slowly dawned on me as I recognized some of the abilities she was using that she was a dps assassin. Not sure why she was marked.
  12. The other day I got popped into Voidstar after it started and someone soon started yelling at everyone because they were attacking tanks instead of healers. I noticed that none of the enemy team were marked. What I wondered is why the person yelling didn't mark the healers so that the rest of the team would have a clue who to attack instead of just trying to guess who might or might not be a healer or know how to figure it out if they haven't been playing long and aren't used to all of the class skills. This person griped nearly the whole rest of the game and called everyone something slightly derogatory at the end. At not one point were the healers ever marked.
  13. I've attacked the *group* that the mobs all belong to. Oftentimes if there is a strong or an elite in the group, I will attack and kill the weaker mobs first and then kill the stronger one. There is no reason that I should have to cycle through each mob in the group and hit it so that someone won't come barreling through to kill it first. That leaves all three or four of them beating on me while I'm spending extra time doing it when I could have instead spent that time killing two of the weaker mobs. Why other players can't be respectful of this, I don't know, but it's annoying and yes, it happens a lot., and no, I don't consider the other mobs in the linked group I'm currently fighting to be free game for anyone else to come and take.
  14. Thank you! Good to know! I'll rework my strategy in the other two depending on the situation.
  15. I've done the multiple capping thing, but only because I heard or read somewhere that the more people trying to cap, the faster it goes, so I thought I was helping it go faster when I would join someone else already capping. Is this not true? If not, then I definitely don't have a problem not doing it, but maybe others who are doing it are under the same impression that it helps the cap move faster and that they are helping the team.
  16. They do steal them if you are fighting a group of linked mobs and you haven't done damage to one or more of them yet. You might argue that they aren't mine if I haven't damaged them yet, but if they are linked and I have them crowd controlled or they are attacking and damaging me and/or my companion, then I do consider them to be my claim. In any case, it's rude and uncalled for for someone to interfere with what I'm doing and potentially putting me in danger by breaking my stuns. I do not get credit for my quests when others roll through and kill my linked mobs. (Note that I'm not talking about any of the other mobs in the same area that aren't linked together. Those are fair game to anyone.) It has happened time and time again to the point where I try to wait until anyone visible to me has left the area or are preoccupied with something else before I start my fights. So no, I'm not going to buff or thank someone who comes through and robs me of my time because they can't seem to find their own mobs to kill, even if there are hundreds of mobs available other than mine. It's a huge pet peeve for me. Thank goodness for the instanced areas where I can handle my own fights in peace!
  17. I do buff myself, but here are some of the reasons I don't always return buffs: 1. I am afk. 2. I am preoccupied with something else and do not notice that someone has buffed me, particularly if I have vendor, skill, crafting, etc. windows up on my screen. 3. Someone randomly decides to "help" me kill something, effectively stealing my kill and making me take longer to do my quests, and then buffs me thinking that I'm going to be eternally grateful for what they did. 4. I am afk.
  18. I like things quiet in general, so no, my game music and sounds aren't loud, and I never listen to other music when playing. If for some reason, I turn off a game's music because I find it annoying, I don't listen to anything at all. I only use headphones when using Vent.
  19. I think it takes 18 hours for the fleet pass to become reusable again. You should also be able to get a shuttle back to the fleet from dromand kaas.
  20. I've been playing SWTOR for a little over a month, and haven't PvPed in a game since DAOC. Yep, I'm a SWTOR/PvP noob. I've been having a great time in the level 50 warzones over the past few days, and have been playing exclusively in PUGs. Yesterday, I went in wearing mostly recruit with two pieces of battlemaster and a battlemaster weapon. Came in 3rd in the rankings in voidstar once yesterday. No, it's not common for me to rank that high, but the fact that it happened shows that it is possible. I don't think I ever ranked that high in 10-49 because I was still trying to learn the maps and the game. I was happy to hit 50 because then I could actually *do* something with the commendations I'd been collecting rather than have them start going to waste because of the inventory limit. I *like* having goals and something to work towards in a game and was so excited to be able to get my battlemaster robe after completing my weekly. (My random PUG teams won four out of the five games I played yesterday.) Yes, I've occasionally been steamrolled by pre-mades who may have been in war hero gear. Yes, I've played some games where I've come away with absolutely *no* medals, but the majority of the time the teams have been pretty balanced as a whole. I've lasted way more than the less than 5 seconds some people in these threads claim is inevitable for those wearing recruit gear. Granted, I'm not a healer class, but most of the time the whole other team isn't focused on me unless I'm stupid enough to run into the group of them by myself like a lemming (which I've done...I've likely made every mistake in the book multiple times.) Maybe because I don't consider myself some sort of "leet PvPer" and don't expect to go into every game owning everyone else, or crying that it's not fair and unbalanced if I can't be on top 60% to 80% of the time, most of the things people are complaining about in these threads don't bother me. I just keep joining games and having fun. If I win, great! If I lose, then I try to learn something from it for the next time. I don't want to go back to 10-49 with this character. There is nothing to achieve there after reaching commendation max. I definitely do *not* want PvP exclusive gear removed. I only like to PvE raid on occasion, so would not enjoy having to devote over 90% of my time raiding in order to make progress in PvP. I'd also rather risk going up against the occasional war hero pre-made than have the PvP queues be an hour long because it's trying to match me up with some perfect combination of opponent. Part of the fun of PUGs is not knowing what you'll get, and then working with what you get in order to make the best of it, whatever it may be. Maybe more people would have more fun if they would just relax and just play the game.
  21. You can also get 100 ranked commendations from doing the daily.
  22. We're not out there attempting to win 1 vs. 1 duels, but instead working as a team to complete objectives. So while it is true I may not be able to win 1 vs. 1 against a better equipped player, but I can certainly help my team bring that player down if that player is an obstacle to our objective. And yes, I've been in groups where we have been steamrolled by players who were vastly more equipped than we were and probably pre-made to boot, but the majority of the time, each side is composed of random PuG's with similar varying levels of equipment. While each player may not be evenly matched, each *team* is evenly matched. The difference between the win and the loss is indeed teamwork. I enjoy having goals to strive for in a game. When I see someone who is vastly better equipped than me, I don't despair and think, "Oh no, I'll never catch up." If I get smooshed by someone who has obviously been playing longer, I don't walk away making excuses that I'd be like that too if I lived in my parent's basement and didn't have to hold down a job. I am instead inspired and motivated to improve. I'm also not competing with them so much as competing with myself. If I do better today than I did yesterday, then I'm happy. When I upgrade an item, I'm adding a more powerful tool to my toolbox, and that also makes me happy. I enjoy the random PuGs in the warzones because it's fun never knowing what you'll get and seeing if you can make the best of whatever combination happens. Easy PvP queues and character progression is all in place. What's not to like?
  23. There are always going to be people who are better than you both in a game and in life. Does that mean you just give up, roll over, and die when you are given options (many for free) to improve your condition? If you don't enjoy playing with newer players in recruit gear in random queues, then make some friends who do ranked PvP and you will then always know your team. There's not a single thing in this game (barring something that might have been a one-time pre-order gift) that players have that you can't also get by doing the same as them. Your characters are currently better equipped than mine and yet I'm somehow not having all of these same problems competing as you seem to have, and I'm having a great time in the process, win or lose. Again, the main issue I've noticed is lack of teamwork that has very little to do with gear.
  24. Well if you give up, of course you're not going to win. What's stopping you from getting that porsche even if you have to start out with a geo? Especially if they are giving you $1000 every day to put towards the porsche just for participating in the race?
  25. It applies to any sport. Tennis players will take special care to equip themselves with the shoes, racquets, etc. that work best for them and help to improve their performance. If their competitor insists on sticking with Walmart special shoes or go barefoot because they don't want to spend the money on a custom fit, then they may not be as competitive in the game with those who do put care and time into *every* aspect of the game in order to get that edge. No one is preventing or disallowing *any* of us from getting battlemaster or war hero gear. The only people who won't have it are those who want it but don't want to do what the ones who have it did to get it.
