MMO SOLO Ranked

 

Why solo ranked is the root of all evil and what to do about it. A short excursion into human psychology

 

 

1. Trial and Error

 

Trial and Error is one of the keys to a good personality. You do something bad and admit it, and that will help you to get better. However, for people with low selfesteem its hard to follow that concept. Its hard for such people to admit theyve done a mistake. This origins in the desire to be perfect and not making mistakes. People like this often tend to blame others for their mistakes. They have a dysfunctional self-awareness that ultimately leads to a toxic behavior. Note that not every person with low selfesteem is automatically a toxic person. However there is a statistic relation.

2. The root of all evil

Obviously in an mmo the average of people with low selfesteem is larger than in the real world. However in swtor they found an ideal place to live their personality: Solo ranked. Solo ranked is played 1000 times more than group ranked.

The odd is: Most players agree group ranked is the favorable mode. So how is it that solo ranked is that dominant?

Because although people claim they want group ranked, its solo ranked that fits their personality. If you lose in team ranked 4 games in a row you have to reevaluate your performance, your teamplay or that of your comrades. Solo ranked is much easier, you just blame matchmaking or your teammades. You never have to question yourself. Yout get globbaled? Blame your mates for not supporting you. This is much easier than admitting youre not a toptier player. And its much easier to yell in capslock and insult others than admitting your own mistakes.

 

3. Solution

 

Its very simple and many other games allready done it: Merge group and solo que.

Of course we then need a forced trinity for solo (healer/tank/2dps) for every game.

Such a system is allready in place for hc flashpoints why not for ranked?

Make ranked one que. Make a groupfinder for ranked. Forced trinity. If you que solo you can, just like for a flashpoint refuse your teamcomposition. You will then be placed back for 15min from listing again. Balance classes around trinity.

 

TL;DR

 

Merge solo and group rank and thus killing two birds with one stone. Silence toxic players and reviving teamplay which kinda seems essential in an MMO.

IMO They should just get rid of solo rating altogether. It means nothing and it's incredible unbalanced as there's so many factors that affect your rating other than skill alone....win traders...hackers...bad team mates....afkers...

 

It's been a joke since it came out and it will always be a joke. The only way solo ranked would kinda mean something if it was 1v1 queues, even then you got class unbalance too...

Any half functional premade will dominate a group of random 4. Period. It is stupid to even suggest it. Ranked could be a very good thing in this game but the biggest problem is population and win trading/hacking etc. If there was a true ELO system 80 - 90 % of the issues would disappear.

 

Your suggestion would effectively kill ranked.

Win trading killed any meaningful value of ranked long ago.

 

There is no meaningful value of your rank score. The Ranked game play can be at times the best, most challenging aspect of this game. But EAWare refuses to police it/fix it. This falls squarely on their shoulders.

Its the very point to force people to work in a group to be effective. The current system encourages players to be selfish and toxic. This needs to stop. Solo ranked has harmed the community for long enough, soon noone will be left.
