Commando- DPS Discipline

Hello everyone! I'm currently enjoying my Vanguard, but I was curious as to how the Commando plays.

To my knowledge, Gunnery is the burst DPS discipline and Assault Specialist is the DoT DPS discipline. Was wondering, which are more fun to play or level as? How do they fare in PvP?

I can't speak on the DOT spec ... but Gunnery is hell to work with in arenas. You got a gazillion utilities to work with but none of them are sufficient to save you when you get focused on. And you are always focused on. In 1 v 1 or 8 v 8, you can hold your own. But the arena setting is no place currently for Gunnery. You will die fast. You will die hard. And your team mates will give you hell for it even though it is beyond what you can control.

Along those lines here is the transcript of most 4 man PVP where there is a Merc on both teams.....

My Team, "Focus the Merc he will die fast they have **** cooldowns... OK yeah .. good plan...

Me, "..."

The fight begins, 5 seconds after combat starts we are both dead...

My Team "*** man how did you die so fast L2P noob.... dont ever queue again"

Me: "..."

Merc/Mando are **** in PvP, the other posters are correct, you die in like 5 seconds.

In PvE they are great, very mobile ranged dps that isn't too squishy.

Arsenal/Gunnery is the burst spec, it has a fairly easy rotation, super easy resource management (it is nearly impossible to overheat/deplete) and is VERY VERY mobile, only Tracer Missile/Grav Round require sitting still.

IO/Assault Spec is the DoT spec, it has probably the most difficult rotation and most difficult heat/energy management of any spec in the game. The payoff is it also is one of the highest parsing dps specs in the game (they used to be #1, but since 3.1.2 are now are #2 behind engineering snipers/saboteur slingers).

Since 12x xp has rolled around I just leveled a commando from 1-57 and early levels are hell to level. But as others have explained Gunnery is very much a glass cannon with emphasis on the glass part. you are the first target against enemies who know what they're doing and there's not much you can do about it.

But, Gunnery is the better spec to level in imo since you can get Hail of Bolts to do lots of the work on mobs.

I wouldn't call Mercs/Mandos glass cannons, at least in PvE. I suppose if you were trying to level them in WZs it would be hell, Mercs/Mandos really do have issues in PvP.

I haven't leveled either since 3.0 came out. Actually considering doing it simply because I have seen other people report issues with the class leveling in PVE now. Maybe it is players not knowing a rotation or pick the proper utilities. Or it could just as equally be sections in the leveling that need changes to the skill aquirement.

But by the time you hit the 50s, Gunnery is the king of PVE. Things die and die quickly. Down time is practically nill for this class. Just run with a properly geared healer and it is all good. My level 60 gunnery is actually my toon of choice to do dailies with.

I'm running a Gunnery Commando at level 27, & it's been very easy to level, even without a healer companion. It's also been a lot of fun in warzones; I die a lot, but I dish out a lot of damage too, & sometimes I even get the kill & survive :)

I leveled my merc almost entirely post-3.0 and it was super easy, maybe a lot of tracer missile spam early on, but you aren't terribly squishy and mako does a good job of keeping you alive. My previous leveling experience was an Op, so I might be a little biased there (given Ops are squishy as heck and have no AoE).
