Sup, I usually really like your podcasts. Sadly they aren't in any time I could realistically watch them live. 

However, as you probably already know, some of the ranked takes especially were... not that accurate or straight up misrepresent the community entirely. However you accurately described what a player not in the community would think about ranked. Some of the arguments you made were along the lines of: 

1. ranked is not worth maintaining, it has a higher cost of maintaining then someone might think, investigating reports, new rewards etc. 

The problem is that there were no reports read and acted upon last season, there was a new weapon set - you know, like the one the cartel market gets every minor patch, and the reused flairs - yes there were new titles, but in all the effort and resources they did announce those TWICE, but with different titles! So nobody even knew really what they were even getting. 

2. ranked players can duel or make preset games via challenges

Yes, yes we could but how is this fun. It is called solo-ranked for a reason, I do not want to know in what team I am in advance and take a gamble, being upset about getting a bad team is one of the best parts about ranked because it makes it feel real. Sometimes you just get unlucky it is what it is. This gamble adds insane flavor to ranked.

3. solo ranked wasn't as popular

it's just not true, solo ranked was way more popular than teamranked 

4. ranked players weren't welcoming new players and toxic in general (at 46:30 especially and 49) 

it is simply not the job of the ranked players to put the toxic people in their place, it is simply not our job to "keep the pool clean". People are WAY more toxic in regs, there was the situation described by you in which case a "no name player" would enter solo ranked and be focused down on a squishy class and then gets called bad. The underlying assumption being that the player gets flamed for playing a bad class, which in this preseason would've been something like sniper. Sniper is the by far worst class for solo ranked right now, but good snipers don't get flamed even though they die first. If the sniper tries to live and tries to kite there he is showing his team they can bother to try to win since it's not just a 3v4. In ranked player are good enough to see, probably instantly, if a player is good or bad. It has very little to do with the classes and usually focusing a bad player is not a smart idea since... well they are bad what are they going to do? Basic attack? Oh no! If a player is so bad, doesn't know any basics or how to play their classes basics, they are focused down because of the mentality of their team, that is what is being attacked in reality. Why, why in the world would I try to win a game when someone just dies instantly and provides nothing? Is that a too high barrier and too much to ask? A class like sniper will always die with around 460k taken and there is not much you can do about that, but dying with 300k is not acceptable. For merc this number is much higher, a merc can take 1.2 to 1.4m damage and still die faster than a sniper. It actually has very little to do with the classes the players play and everything with how they play them and how they try to pull their weight. Am I really being toxic if I try to save my elo and that players time if I tell him to "try regs a bit more before you come into ranked, you're missing essential basics"? I don't think that's toxic at all,  wouldn't it be way more toxic to say nothing, see him get destroyed for 1h maybe 2 and then just insta leave when he's in your team? Does that help anybody? 

Ranked was actually were welcoming, people were helping me left and right to get better because I came with a foundation which to build upon, I learned how to focus target modifier interrupt from alim, I learned how to be good on sage from cerasi and lyala, I learned how to tank from xantrian and all I did was ask them. Come to any ranked player with a basic knowledge of the game and the abilities and I guarantee that you will not find ANY toxicity. The community is straight up to small to have any drama, it does not work. In S13 neyorus made (or idk if he made it but that's the first time I saw it) this meme . It is 100% accurate, you can be mad at another member of the community, but it can't be drama because... well it's to small! Sure some people didn't like each other and sure some other people took it too far but that is usually between known members and players who have earned respect and titles already, so everybody knows nothing will happen because both are kinda right in their own way. I didn't do much on SF last season, but the few games I had the player caprica helped out everybody left and right motivating people helping them improve everything, just for bioware to scam him out of BOTH (I think) of his earned top3s. 

Bioware took the only way we had to enforce the thing you said. They took the tool to keep the pool clean away, which would be votekick. Which also got removed due to "abusing" it, but I saw it maybe once or twice and that was just fun between players who already knew each other. 

Also, in an online game. A ranked mode, as a new player? What did they expected I mean come on.

5. "block people, ban people, report people - a lot more of that could've been going on"

No. Bioware does not take action. This player got reported COUNTLESS times and he did not even receive any punishment that I know of. 

6. Everybody gets told to stop queueing.

Because, they want to protect them from getting farmed over and over and over and over and over again until they actually do get flamed for wasting everybody's time! Where is the difference from getting kicked from a MM fps for not doing enough damage and this situation, I simply don't see a difference

 

By the way, are you actually interested in knowing why it got removed to begin with? It had nothing to do with toxicity and improving the experience, they didn't know how to make a season rating for one character with two classes? How does Top3 work now? What if you're a gunslinger PT farm rating on PT than go slinger? Do you get to be a top3 slinger than? They didn't want to do that, it would've cost them any resources and that is actually the reason it got removed. They did not know what to do and did not have the resources to come up with a solution. Now, everybody gets to "tell their bad ranked experience" and pull the community through the mud one last time. Ranked is a very deep gamemode, everybody has heard of it: queue manipulation - it's an actual thing and people use it to defend top3 titles for tanks especially. 

 

I agree with most of your other points and I do not mean this is an "offending" or "provoking" manner. I suggest when you talk about a topic this "spicy" next time ask a player of the community to come join you because it really did not represent the ranked community accurately or fairly. I suggest asking @septru for ranked. He is well respected well known and a friend of biggs. I'm sure that would've been a more fair representation.

Sorry I missed these replies here from ZUHFB and Prum (I think you two are the 2nd and 3rd replies ever in the last 5 years here ). Yeah, Prum and I talked and I also read through what ZUHFB posted here. I've also talked to other ranked players (both before and after our take). I really appreciate hearing more takes and sides. Yeah, we come at it from a bit of an outside perspective (or just scraping the surface since I and others in our teams have done some ranked). It's certainly a complex set of issues all around. 

Top line in our discussion then and now is that any game mode that players had fun with going away is disappointing, regardless of the reasons. I do really hope some form of ranked or something that provides the same organization and rewards can come back at some point in the future. Please stay connected and let me know both how 7.2 ends up (if there's anything to salvage there for the hardcore ranked players) and we can watch what happens in the future.
