Putting the TL;DR first so you don’t have to read our life story :p

After putting a fair amount of work into this, we felt like sharing with the public our... Ventrilo Server inside a Lego AT-AT Model!!!!

For those of you who are still around, more pics and a video at the end!

The concept for this came one day over the summer when I said jokingly to my friend and guildy, Rehmaar, at a bbq: “Hey wouldn’t it be cool to put a computer inside a Lego AT-AT”. A couple weeks later he called me up and said I should come over to start working on the project I thought was a joke.

My friend is a fairly avid lego fan and so had several buckets of legos which we sorted by color to make the building process easier. From there we just started building from scratch, no plans, no blueprint, not even basing it off any existing model. The first day was such a blast that we spent 10+ hours on it, and another 10+ hours over the next two days to get the body done. The legs took a couple weeks after that to get done because of classes and running out of legos (so each leg had to have a different design but the same dimensions). Sadly to reasonably fit a computer inside a lego model, some concessions needed to be made, like the dimensions aren’t exactly perfect, but, well… we had to fit a computer inside of it!

We finally got everything done shortly before launch and set it up in my basement… we’ve been using our AT-AT vent server to communicate with our guildies since early access! Of course the free Ventrilo server software only allows 8 people on at once, so we’ll probably switch to another voip software in the future to allow more people (or if for some reason a Ventrilo exec is reading this and wants to make an exception and feels like throwing us a free license… :p)

Now for more Pictures!!

(shhh, most of our effort was put into the at-at, not this video)

Finally in closing, after playing for a bit now, I just wanted to thank Bioware for this amazing game that me and my friends have been thoroughly enjoying since last week. After meeting the founders and a couple other head-honchos at the best buy midnight release in NYC, I’ve got to say they were some of the nicest and most humble people I’ve met. You guys have been my favorite developers ever since I got hooked on the first ME, and SWTOR only cements that even more, this is the most fun we’ve had in a MMO in a very, very long time!

Haha, this is awesome. Must have taken quite a while!

Thanks! It really wasn't too bad, a good ~20 hours on the body/case (over 3 days) and a few hours every week on the legs (over a couple weeks).

Much, much less then SWTOR is going to suck from our lives :D

That is bad *** !!!

Also, Teamspeak has a free version that will alow up to 1000 users.

Yeah, Teamspeak was one of the options we were thinking about, the only reason I went with Vent right off the bat is because thats what we're all familiar with... but I'm open to other ideas as well. I'll look into Teamspeak more, thanks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Pretty cool deal man.

I'd look at TS or Mumble (Mumble is open source, and both TS and Mumble are way better on latency than vent, and if you don't do vent normalization, Mumble and TS have better quality... and at least equal quality with vent normalization/optimizing).

But yeah.. most ppl in the US use Vent for whatever reasons (familiarity, I suppose).

Yeah, that's the exact reason we still use vent... we've just been using it for so long its become the norm. I think I'm going to throw up TS tonight and see if I can get our lazy guildies to switch over and test if we like it. Thanks for the input!
