Vanguard full redesign

All is pretty good except- 4. Superheated Plasma no longer buffs the damage of Plasma Cell, and instead increases its duration by 2 / 4 / 6 seconds.

Plasma cell should be on your target at all times anyway so increasing the duration wouldn't help me at all. I understand it would increase damage for aoe purposes, but it wouldn't help single target dps at all which is what we need improved. Yeah 1 mil + is easy to do in a wz as a van but that is aoe dps... I do agree that vanguard needs some major work. They can put out some decent numbers but can be easily out performed by other classes. I'd definitely like to see more burst damage from vans. Sure they can do a lot with a combination of shoulder cannon/ battle focus but I want to see bigger hits than a max of 6Kish.

Speaking from a PvE standpoint, VG/Powertech can put out incredible damage if you know how to use it (and run a specific spec, which is somewhat annoying).

Sure, they don't have the operation wide utility of an armor debuff, or inspiration/bloodthirst, or aoe damage reduction bubbles, but they can put out enough damage to make up for it if the rest of your composition is good enough.

I'm in a very competent end game progression guild with some of the best dps in the world, and our vanguard dps regularly matches or beats everybody on boss fights.

I agree that there should be work done on them to make full trees viable (dps) for end game pve, but to say that there are far better dps classes is a stretch (talking about just dps, not operation wide buffs. Obviously they are at a disadvantage for some range favored fights considering mechanics and no gap closer).

Also, our main tank is a Vanguard and can handle anything in the game, including 16 man nightmare, so I'm not sure why you think they (tank spec) are so bad for PvE.

I just got back about a day ago. Was going to play my vanguard/commando then it hit me, why? The vanguard is poorly designed. I am not interested in this mirror crud that everyone keeps talking about. Two of our abilities pulse cannon and ion pulse look nothing like what a Trooper would use. As the other player has suggested getting close to an enemy is difficult, and if you do you die. The only spec I have had success with is full tank in pvp covering a healer.

Why developers keep trying to get cute with the simplest of things is beyond me. A trooper shoots a blaster rifle with blaster bolts, is it really that hard to understand? Different kinds of blaster bolts are fine, but little electric storms I do not think so. At any rate I would like to see the vanguard become a ranged tank, that at least would make it useful, but to be honest I do not see that happening.

The reason I quit before was the sad list for updates all the way through October. I have not seen anything that suggests they wish this game to grow, but we have all seen ample proof they wish the players to be sucked dry RL money wise. So no I do not seem them taking the time to redesign the vanguard.

kudos on this post.. vanguard is my favorite, but its no longer fun. its no longer viable in ranked. does ok but mediocre in regs.. its pretty useless anymore.. main thing is the class basically died when crit got nerfed.. the Hib barely hits for any damage. i was getting bigger Hib hits prior to 2.0. that's been my main concern.

but, adrenaline rush still kinda sucks even with the mediocre self-heal added to it, doesnt do much for survivability..

Hib which used to be the bread and butter now hardly hits.. vg's don't hold up well at all against other classes in 1v1, can't kill anything quickly anymore.. aside from redesigning and fixing the change to critical chance, something needs to be done to make vg's viable again.

I really enjoy my vanguard. I swap between shield spec and tactics depending on the day and have found great success. I love playing mid range to melee. The only thing I think we could use is another defensive cool down and storm for all specs. I've had great Pvp matches, hm flash points on both my specs and have just started ops. No issues anywhere.

Really it seems people are looking not for a viable spec but rather another overpowered spec. The memories of mmo dps'rs is long and wistful for the days when there spec was a one button hero.

I love the feel of the vanguard class. Im the tough soldier that charges into the fray unafraid of light sabers and blaster bolts. I get in the enemies face and slash shoot and smack them down. I don't need the force an I don't need to duck behind cover because I can take Shot.

Character concept aside I feel the class is solid. Of course there could be tweaks but full redesign heck no.

The problem with VGs is less the need to survive at longer ranges and more about actually being able to instantly/near-instantly close like any decent melee class should be capable of. Scoundrels now have their roll, Knights have Leap, and Shadows have Force Speed. VG DPS are the only ones without a legit gap closer.

I wouldn't call a Scoundrel roll a legit gap closer. It costs a BOAT TON of energy. Basically, it gets you to the boss, but in so doing, you have sacrificed any hope of doing anything by the time you get there. Scrapper gets Sneak as a speed boost, which does help significantly, but Dirty Fighting generally has to rely on DoT refreshes and clever tricks with Pugnacity while slowly walking into place. To add insult to injury, in either of the Scoundrel specs, protracted time out of melee range (anything over 10 seconds) effectively resets our DPS and forces us to burn long cooldowns or suffer significant ramp-up in order to do serious damage again. Vanguards may take a while to get back to the boss, but at least they don't live under a ticking clock as they walk across the arena.

There's no question that being able to refresh DoTs from range and situationally expend energy to close quickly is superior to the state Vanguards are in, but it's not as far ahead as you would think. At least Vanguards get Hold The Line.

Here's a rough layout of what i'd like the vanguard class to be like. All trees should be viable in both PvE and PvP:

Shield Specialist

PvE: tank

PvP: protecting (squishy) allies

Haven't played this spec much after 2.0, but i think its doing allright. Could do with a bit more defensive cd's tho.

Tactics:

PvE: sustained dps + cc support

PvP: tactical dps

This tree needs some work. While it lacks both survivability and burst in PvP, it should have some tricks up its sleeve like more cc's, like another stun (mezz?) or actually good slows for kiting . Also there's not much tactical about having to go into the fray, so give it some ranged abilities. This, along with the sustained dps should make it viable in PvE too.

Assault

PvE: (burst) dmg

PvP: burst dmg

Needs it's burst back, simple

my 2c's
