Ops performance

Hi!

 

So, I bought a PC last year to run SWTOR.

 

Then I beefed it up with a new power supply, video card, Sound Blaster card and a Killer network card.

It still runs the game perfectly at maximum settings, except in the fleet, and 16man ops is almost impossible to do.

I'm thinking, is replacing the video card enough? I'll be sure to post full specs of my system here later.

There have been a boat load of complaints on this issue, insert anti-hero engine rage here, and there's not really much you can do about it other than trying to pick up the same hardware of folks that say they run the game flawlessly everywhere (including fleet/16 player ops).

 

I gave up on doing ops and am just playing through the different class stories. The problems with the engine make it annoying, take all that graphics lag and couple it with the worst out of the box interface I have seen in an MMO (been playing MMO's since DAoC) and you have a nightmare on your hands. Not allowing mods and macros just means you cannot wake up from the nightmare =/...its funny though, that would actually help alleviate a lot of these issues.

My worst experience is doing anything over 8 person. Did Nightmare pilgram with like 24 people and it was terrible. I bought a new laptop with a fair graphics cars with setting at middle of the road and it still lags pretty bad with this game.

2. I build a new computer and have max settings on fleet and do not stutter when you come around the corner to the gtn. I did a fresh install of Win 7 so the game has only been patched 1 or 2 times and performance has not degraded. On my old PC, 2 updates hammered my fps and reinstalling the game from scratch fix the problem both times. Try that also.

But if it's a game issue, wouldn't it affect everything all the time?

Since it's only during situations with lots of things happening on the screen, it highly suggests video card...

But yeah I'll install the game fresh just in case.

So buying a new card won't help????

 

It completely depends on your specs dude. You need to post what you have or we can't help. It could be you need to upgrade CPU or go SSD. We don't know if we don't know where your weak point is.

 

I just made a computer a month or two ago. I get 40 - 60 FPS on fleet and during 16 OPs so it can be done.

It's probably not your video card. This game is unusual in that it is more CPU intensive than processor intensive. Post yours specs or run simple diagnostics to find out what's bottle necking you in this game. It probably isn't your video card.

Did you upgrade your RAM and CPU as well? Those two items will have incredible impact on performance. When the game first came out, I had 8G of RAM, but on W7 32 bit. After I upgraded to 64 bit (so half my RAM wasn't going to waste), it made a huge difference in performance. Another thing you can try, is changing a setting in your preferences that determines how many characters around you, and in what proximity, are rendered at one time (I forgot what it's called, but it's on the bottom of the graphics settings page). I think there are 3 choices, Low, Medium and High.

The problem is your CPU for a start - you have a very slow computer there.

Damn. Then I'm screwed, I think. This computer already gave me a few problems upgrading the stuff I changed, because of the motherboard. Upgrading the processor might be a larger headache.

I'm thinking I should get a new PC but use the RAM, video, sound and network cards from my current one.

What's the best way to do this?

You'd want to start from scratch. You can go to a site like newegg.com and put your type of memory and what slot the graphics card uses and find out what's available for those. You should be able to reuse that power supply too.

Ok.

 

So I watched a few videos and read some info on building your own PC.

I've done it in the past but a LONG time ago. Surprisingly, it didn't change much.

Now, I have a video board, RAM, a hard drive, network card, power supply and sound card.

Which means I would need just the new case, motherboard, CPU unit, and I should be all set.

I picked the top Intel CPU because I'd want this machine to last me a long time, and a compatible ASUS motherboard. Got a nice case too.

I also added an SSD since it's relatively cheap (less than $200 bucks for a 128gb one), I mean, it's NOT cheap compared to a 7200RPM SATA drive but, still.

The whole shebang is amounting to $1.619 on newegg.com.

Now, that seems a lot for just those four parts.

For $1400, I could get an alienware X51 system which is gonna come all set with everything I need, the same processor I picked, a video card that's better than mine, and a 256gb SSD instead of my 128gb one.

I thought building a system was supposed to be cheaper? How the hell is four little parts more expensive than a FULL system, especially considering alienware stuff is supposedly overpriced?

Also, if I do that, I'm also gonna sell my current computer parts, so it's actually gonna be even cheaper...hmmm.
