OldVengeance
Yavin IV is a gas giant so destroying it is probably beyond the capability of the superlaser. Even if it wasn't I think the EU established that the first Death Star's superlaser takes a fairly long time to recharge after being fired. Just ask Jupiter, Saturn, or Bespin. Even if Yavin Prime didn't, a giant vaporizing laser through the center of a gas giant would basically burn a hole through it and then POOF no more planet, due to a lack of center of gravity. The Death Star's laser has to recharge? Doesn't matter. Blow up a planet, and what happens to the moon? It either gets blown up with it or hurdles into space. I agree, this should have happened.... if the Empire was meant to win.

Warren-Stride
Then it would have destroyed the Death Star too if they blew up the gas giant. That didn't happen at Alderaan. The Death Star was at its maximum range from the planet. It has sheilds that could protect it from Alderaan bits and peices, obviously it can protect itself from the gas-burst of an exploding gas giant. You know how close the Death Star was to Yavin? Was rather close compared to Alderaan, and it would be a little different then just pieces from a planet it would be a massive explosion. GarfieldJL
There is also the fact that if they missed Yavin's core, the superlaser would have wasted a shot.

internaty
It is easy to say from hint sight. The simple truth is that they didnt thought about that at the time and thus got blown into pieces. This is a clear cut case of coud have but didnt do it.
Warren-Stride
There is also the fact that if they missed Yavin's core, the superlaser would have wasted a shot. The whole point of the Death Star super-laser is to destoy the core. That's why the Death Star didn't just blow off Yavin 4's right side, it waited until it could hit the core. A laser designed to hit cores undoubtably could destroy a gas giant's.
