Letter to Bioware - Day and Night Cycle, Pod Racing and Dog Fights

I hope you didn't take that to mean, two canines fighting, he's talking about space battles.

For that we would need a space component, which tor does not have.

Unless you envision players taking turns lazily drifting in front of one another as a 'dog fight'.

i really dont see how day and night cycles will improve the game.

also from a reality point of view every planet cant be in their day cycle at the same time it would seem silly.

Never been a fan of day/night and even weather in MMO's.

No one has ever been able to do it well.

It always ends up feeling like it's 'always night time' or it's 'always raining'.

Not to mention it leads to eye strain.

Have you played LOTRO and explored all the regions there? There is a lot of weather and day/night cycle diversity there, and it is done very well.

Drop the god damn day/night request. It's not important, at all. It's been pointed out 1000 times that the planets are a very specific moment in time. Even if they wanted to the tech has to be built for it. They would have to recreate the entire light source and shadow system. It's not ever simple. Stop asking for utterly pointless crap like a day and night cycle.

If you think a day/night cycle will encourage more subs, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

I am for anything being added to the game, that lets my toon feel like it lives in the world and not just playing through it. More game play options things to do outside of combat, some hybrid play a little sand box element here and there, factional based open world pvp like Daoc, this is a huge IP with a huge amount of things that could be added. f2p is not addressing the main issues as to why people are levaing this game, the game just needs more things in it that is not copy and paste from every other mmo out there, and I hope once the f2p goes in and they start to ramp up content releases, they look for more options and not just more wz's flashpoints and op's..

Relax there Arkerus. Just because you don't think it's important, does not mean that others do not, so no, I won't drop this request as *gasp* it is important to me and obviously others as well.

There isn't just one new thing that will help retain or bring in new subs. It is a combination of things.

And no one here is asking for this tomorrow... it's just a hope for some day.

If it's being requested as often as you say it is, it's obviously important to a lot of players, myself being one of them.

Day/Night would be nice *if* it could be implemented in such a way that didn't detract from the current beautiful backgrounds we have. In other words; if I could have a mid-afternoon alpine Alderaan backdrop (probably the current time of day) that slowly fades into a long evening and a dark and starry night with settlements and towers picked out as clusters of golden lights across the deep shadows of the mountainside, I'm in. If, on the other hand, the price is that we lose the backdrops in favour of some vague and ill-defined unbaked skydome... no, I'd rather have what we've got.

Especially Voss. Mess with the beauty of Voss, and I doubt anyone would be happy.

These are great ideas! I think it will be a few expansions in till we see a time cycle. They've got too much else to do I would guess.

Pod Racing is a great idea! There should be a tab for this on your equipment screen where you could upgrade your pod with the best equipment dropping via some Ops or for winning pod racing comms or something.

I like the 1v1 or 8v8 Dogfight idea.

In the vain of Dogfighting, We should also get some 1v1 ranked Warzones. Like a best of 7 1v1, with each kill being a point, 4 points to win. And obviously leaderboards.

Played that through beta and then maybe three months afterwards.

Long time ago, but I do remember rain issues there. Made it really hard to play, and was far to frequent.

Again, this was beta/shortly after launch. I did like the way they did musical instruments though.

Do you still play it?

We always joked about how long the game would go before the socialists would make them remove pipeweed.

Bang for buck doing free flight dogfighting is probably the biggest waste of developer resources ever.

It would appeal to a very small minority and the barrier to entry for "flight sim scrubs" would be extremely high. You load in and someone who clocked 1k hours in tie fighter hands you yor exhaust in 15 seconds flat. The line between perserverance and masochism is not that fine and trying to "master" dogfighting in such an enviroment lands firmly on the side of the latter lol.

OP has to be trolling because these three things listen probably matter to maybe 1000 at most... The game is in such dire straights that the TO DO list probably has 100 things much more important.

Like all the standard MMO services that should have been included with the game at launch and now almost a year later have yet to be implemented.

It baffles me that enough people at EA thought that MMOs having regular content updates meant it was okay to ship an unfinished game and then fill in the missing features over time. That's like selling somebody an empty bun for full price and then, while they're eating it, nonchalantly trying to slide the burger patty and the cheese and the lettuce and etc into it like you didn't totally screw them over. The fact that the Legacy system - which is like one of their grand unique selling points - didn't make it into the game until the second big patch is ridiculous.

The funny thing is that I bet if they'd spun it for the fans, and said "We know the game isn't complete, but we're going to launch early so that all of you players eager to get your hands on it can begin immersing yourself in the world rather than waiting another year!" instead of just rushing the game out in order to cash in on Christmas sales, they would have retained more subscribers and probably wouldn't have been such a colossal failure in the eyes of the community. The fact that they refuse to acknowledge that they made an amateur mistake and continue to play it all off as though it's just a quirk of the genre and they know exactly what they're doing is almost insulting to their demographic.

EA's got to realize that they can play Wall Street and make all the hard, fast business decisions that they want, but in the end they're publishing an interactive and player-driven medium. If you don't respect your players, you end up with a game that goes free to play before its first year is up. And regardless of what they tell their investors, that's not 'normal' and 'the direction the genre is going', that's the sign of a game struggling to remain relevant.

At this point, it's my assumption that they've finished all the standard MMO services - like name changes and character transfers and recustomizations and etc - that this game should have had on day one, and they're just waiting for the cash shop and the new layout to roll them out. Because if those services aren't complete, it's pretty pathetic for a game of this magnitude. So that said, having the developers working on anything, whether it be minigames like racing or dog fighting, or simple aesthetic fluff like time and weather cycles, nothing is a waste of dev time. Because they need all the help they can get.

I totally dissagree. I would even be ok with a SIDE game thats space only but allows you to use your existing toons and tie the 2 games togather.

You're doing it wrong.

No one expects a full on flight sim like independence war 2

Rather something like SWG/JTL

You had throttle up/down and control was entirely by mouse.

Any monkey in a flight suit could do it, it wasn't all that different from what's already in game in terms of controls.

You seem to be expressing an unreasonable fear.

I played SWG from beta until shut down.

At the point when they tried to dumb-down the game (known as the NGE or 'New Game Experience') The ground game was ruined.

I didn't cancel my sub, know why?

Because like a lot of SWG players, I still loved the space game (which was not touched by NGE).

Tons of players have been expressing thier outright disgust for the way EA/BW handled space from the moment it was revealed. In fact, the longest discussions bar-none where on the matter. All of it was ignored, they had this attitude that they knew better. Had they actually implimented a JTL style space component from the begining, this game would be in much better shape today.

Where they to impliment such a component today, it would likely bring more subs then any other content they could add.

I believe Pod Racing is in development. I'll try to go look up the developer dispatch video or article wherever I read it, but I seem to recall one of the developers saying that they tried to capture as many Star Wars fantasies as possible at launch, and that players looking to live their Wedge Antilles, Sebulba and General Veers fantasies should look forward to the future.

Which suggests the new space content might be pretty rad, and there's some sort of vehicle combat in development as well.

The post is here.

I suppose that's not proof that those features are in development, just that the developers have considered it. While we may never see that content, it's nice to hope.

Free roam space flight in a warzone type scenario would be epic. I'd actually play space in TOR.
