No Expanded Space Game?

Thanks everyone for the replies. Other than new rail missions, I still haven't come across anything official in the forums or elsewhere online about an off-the-rails expansion in the near or distant future. I personally like what they've done with the ships so far, and it does seem like the all the fundamentals are already there.

I myself and not interested in EVE, but STO to me seems to have a nice mix of space and ground, although the game itself has always felt a little underdeveloped overall. Mixing in a great immersive Star Wars space MMO experience similar to what this game has already established, in my opinion, would really distance SWTOR from the "WoW clone" label, and put it in a class by itself. That sort of total package is what I (and I think many others) thought this game was going to be from the way they hyped the space game before the beta. I still have hope, I guess.

Of course, until we get something official this is really all just speculation, but I suspect the more we discuss it and let them know we're interested, the more likely it is to happen... maybe!

Your the expert, but try not to be too sad when you dont get your space game anytime soon. Its a minigame they have bigger issues to deal with.

Dont argue with these people, its useles.. There are "area 51" believers around here

So you don't have any actual proof BioWare is developing a full-on "Jump-to-Lightspeed" type space expansion.

Got it.

exactly. One time someone mentioned space would be getting an overhaul (about a year ago). Nobody has given any further detail and certainly nothing that makes it sound like anything but more missions or maybe co-op tunnel shooter, it could be anything.

Given how linear this game is, open "jump to lightspeed" style space seems unlikely.

What bigger issues are you talking about.. They have tons of on ground content made. One of the biggest things they can do to up sub is have a massive open space game like the one their working release. Your not really making any sense.

Hmmm. I don't know, maybe lag issues in the Operations and flashpoints for 1, not to mention more raiding content. Though I enjoy space, think it makes more sense to build up the ground work before putting all their cookies in the space basket, when alot of people haven't even bothered to play the initial space game.

I am sure it may be some side project of theirs, but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon if I were you.

Your opinion is duly noted, but personally, Battlefront II's space game was a lot of fun. I'm not limiting myself to accepting ONLY the duplication of another game. I'd say you're setting yourself up for disappointment yet again.

I'm an old X-Wing fan from way back (in its original difficulty, when you could struggle with missions even having a co-pilot doing all of the keyboard work), but I'm not demanding a duplication of X-Wing or threatening to declare it all crap otherwise.

It needs to be expansive, as well as fun. Many of SWTOR problems come from its very focused and crushed style, whilst jamming bigger space into the game would be an improvement, if they repeat the same mistakes of the game (not producing something innovative and better than the older stuff) it's not going to really push the game forward.

I hope we do get an expanded space flight experience in the game. Reading through the free to play Q & A this morning, they mention that that have plans to develop more space missions as future content. I hope thats as well as and not instead of the space game development.

I'll have to have a look at that.

If it's "space missions" as in more on-the-rails, then I'm not surprised.............. because that's exactly the sort of bite-sized sellable content than F2P/Cashshop MMORPGs usually specialise in. :(

(edit - after reading the Q&A my guess would be that they are refering to exactly the above)

April 2012.

Daniel Erickson: "the next iteration of space is the single thing" I'm most excited about across all of SWTOR's incoming new features.

June 2012: Interview with Daniel Erickson

Q: In the future content trailer we saw the addition of a new space combat mission named “Space Station Assault.” Was this the secret space development you were talking about?

A: No.

What we’re talking about in the future is revolutionary. We’re talking about a completely different pixel space.

Now it may still be a bit vague but have faith guys. Well, try to at least.

Sorry, but those vague declarations were months before the game switched to f2p due massive subs drop. I don't see EA "wasting" more money in a game that is dying and is trying to save switching to f2p.

But lets say there's still a "secret space project". The engine can't handle a free roam space game. We can see it every day when FPs and OPs lags as soon as there are more than 2 teams doing the same. So it'll be heavily instanced because is the only way this game can handle servers population: putting people in small instances, and even that way it's not lag free. To say it short: they will turn the current rail missions into free flight missions, but the same instance: Certainly revolutionary and new pixel but definetely not what is needed/wanted.

BioWare/EA should give us some info regarding the space project to keep us around, the rail shooter is a abomination for a AAA-Star-Wars-mmorpg which was developed for what.. 5-6 years and cost $500m (including branding and pr costs) and launched late 2011... I cant believe Lucas Arts gave the go for that...

So people that want space have to wait, so you can get more raids made? Even though, in a poll by bioware, space came out as top for what people wanted? Sorry, but you've got your content for now, with extras on the way in 1.4. Time for the space guys to get something. Who knows, if the launched with decent space, they might not have been in the situation they're in now.

It's cool you don't care about space, some people don't. I hope you get all the ground based content you desire, I really do. Would you consider that a large proportion of players want a decent space game though? The polls suggest it, as do the numerous threads. Is it too much to ask?

I'll be incredibly surprised if there is any big space expansion or if it's any good. At this point I have pretty much zero faith in the SWTOR devs.

I fully expect the "secret space project" to just be more poorly done starfox 64 missions.

Developing further on-rails missions would be a waste of resources if they planned on completely revamping the space game, and keeping a free-roam space next to on-rails space would make further development a huge (and expensive) PITA - the same reason SOE didn't keep pre-NGE servers next to NGE servers, or Blizzard won't open Vanilla/BC/WotLK/Cataclysm capped servers.

It's vague though - "a completely different pixel space" could just mean a different resolution (it probably doesn't, but it could).

The only thing that kept SWG afloat as long as it did after SOE destroyed that game with the CU/NGE was the space game. You could never find anyone on the ground. Everyone was in space. Whether you choose to believe it is on you.

Correctly done space is a HUGE draw to a game, especially with space and ground combined well in one game.

Yes. It is the future and you will get it in an expansion. Don't worry, they are probably working on it and it will be awesome.

I don´t think there will be a full expansion only content we buy with a couple of months in the cashshop.

I wish they had kept the original DEV team, this game could have been so awesome in the future :csw_destroyer:

Lets put it this way, it seems very unlikely they are making a huge expansion with the amount of devs they've laid off. :(

You have no idea how MMOs work do ya? Of course there will be a full expansion! Look at LotRO, just put out like the third FULL expansion since they went F2P and their F2P isn't even like ours. Quit being like chicken little, the sky isn't falling guys. There will be expansions. FULL expansions.

Er..... no they haven't they've had ONE very small expansion since F2P and Rider of Rohan whenever that comes out will be the 2nd.

Where as under subscription they had one HUGE expansion (Mines of Moria) and one smaller expanion (Siege of Mirkwood - which was a similar size to the 1st F2P one).

Now any decent SWTOR space expansion would need to be something about the size of a MoM expansion; i.e. huge, nearly as big a deal as the vanilla game itself.
