First Roll - Jedi Sage; bad idea?

I've had this game for just over a day now, and I've picked up most of the basics (I think!), having played WoW a couple of years back. Due to computer issues, I haven't been able to get the game until very recently, but I've had a mental plan of which classes I want to begin the game with. Needless to say, I started with a consular - and after being given the choice to specialise, went with the Sage. I was thinking of going down the healer route, but I'm having considerable difficulties in combat compared to my Sith Warrior which I started today, and leveled twice as quickly.

In your opinion, was it a mistake to begin the game with a Sage? Would a Shadow be considerably easier; or should I just scrap the consular as a whole for a while, until I've level-capped my Juggernaut and maybe one or two other classes? Thanks!

Leveling as a healer role is more difficult in my opinion (leveled a healer Operative, and Sith Sorcerer to 50) just because you will mainly have to heal your (tank) companion if you want to get anything done, I recommend leveling as a dps then switching to a healer spec at level cap or whenever you feel you really want to heal again.

Okay, thanks a lot! Thankfully, I'm still in the very early levels on my Sage - so I could work more on Telekenetics; in fact I think I spent my first point there. I've already noticed what you said about healing a lot; I'm spending a great deal of combat time healing Qyzen, and frankly it gets kinda boring just healing an unappreciative AI for minutes at a time! Anyway, thanks a lot - I'll take your advice on board.

Sage was my first lv50, sticking to Telekinesis is a good idea,

You will also want to use Qyzen until lv46 where you get Nadia, I tried with othe companions but they just didn't work well

Your first major fight will be at lv30, the boss from chapter 1, this boss is so stupid that I killed him with lightsaber hits, he is hard until you get the pattern of his attacks, then it becomes mehh...

The second fight that you may have trouble is the boss from the class quest on Alderaan, she is STUPIDLY hard to kill as a Telekinesis Sage, this was the only fight that I used a healer.

The final boss of the game is also hard, but I killed him with Nadia after the 15th time, I tried each companion and Nadia was the best one because of her high damage

PS: Don't forget to gear your selected companion, they are worthless without decent armor

Let's put it this way, when I was leveling as a healer, I saw a lot of Assassins (Shadow equivalent) who needed my help with their class quests. It's really easy to just heal your tank companion and throw damage-over-time abilities on the enemy. Around level 30 you get a powerful AOE (area effect) ability and you can pretty much just shield yourself and spam that every pull.

I didn't have too much trouble leveling my healer operative, but I had two 50s already and some extra cash to beef up the first companion you get and really relied on her for like the first 30 levels. I just let her aggro everything and I fired off the heals to keep her alive. Now, even when she dies I can usually win the fight myself by just healing myself in between stabbing the evildoers, etc. Cool thing about the operative is the stealth overload ability (my "oh ****" button) that exits combat and puts you in stealth, if I ever bite off more than I can chew POOF and I'm gone. Also great in pvp when you're about to be killed, although many players/classes can bring you out of stealth. I'm just about lvl 50 with this healer and I actually have more fun with it than I do with my tank - pve groups are a lot of fun as healer and I kind of feel like batman keeping everyone alive. PVP as healer requires some finesse I would say and i think I have the hang of it down at this point but if I'm on a bad team that doesn't work together I can still have fun myself with my stealth - you'd be surprised how easy it is to cap objectives right behind enemy players Lolz Nobody ever turns around - tunnel vision or something, I'm not sure.

Thanks for the advice everybody, I've just read all of the posts and I'm definitely more confident in my choices in the game. The Operative sounds a lot more fun than I'd anticipated, I'll be giving that a try at some point definitely :D

This is my first MMO, so we are not at all in the same boat, but I had a ball leveling up my Gunnery-spec'd Commando. Even after the 1.2 nerfs to the class, it's still fun in the lvl 50 WZs (where the challenge is learning how to cope with being a glass cannon).

Ya know, I heard this a lot, so when I got to Alderaan on my Madness/TK hybrid sage, I was expecting to get creamed the 1st time while I figured out what was going on. But I just did my typical "kill a gold" routine with her and she went down easy. Is it becuz I interrupt as a matter of course that she was so easy for me while she gives others so much trouble?

First of all: Welcome!, secondly, leveling up as a DPS or DPS/healer Hybrid is alot easier to level than a straight healer, hope that helps a bit:D

Having leveled a sage/healer to 50, a dps trooper to 41, and a tank guardian to 47 - I'll say the following things.

1. You learn something different from each roll, and some of those skills translate to better play in the other rolls. leveling my tank & dps alts changed the way I heal dramatically.

2. Dps leveling is probably quicker for a first toon, tank the second, healing the last.

3. After my sage healer, leveling my dps is a breeze, but my tank feels a little grindy.

4. Leveling dps & then trying to switch to healing doesn't work so hot. I respecced my trooper from dps to heals, and it wasn't a good experience. It takes a lot of practice to be a good healer. You have to change targets frequently, be flexible with how you use your abilities, and suffer greater resource management issues, as a healer. While a dps realy just has to learn to focus down the same target as their comp with an optimal rotation.

That being said - a sage only needs enough points in the healing tree to get conveyance & healing trance. Because the AoE isn't necessary for story mode flashpoints, or while leveling. At level 35 the best spec is probably 14,7,3
