Vanguard DPS Help PvE...

Hello,

My friend started the game thinking he was going to be a Vanguard Tank and ultimately found out he dislikes tanking. He doesn't want to re-roll, so he has to go Vanguard DPS. I'm trying to get as much info as possible to find out whether he should re-roll or stick to Vanguard...I didn't see a guide or anything so here are my questions:

What talent tree and build is best for Vanguard DPS? (Plz include link if possible)

What secondary talents does the Vanguard have? Such as AOE, a Push, Interrupt, a Taunt if needed, Aggro Dump, a CC?

And finally the most basic, solid rotation for him to use? He is level 31 right now...

Thanks in advance, this is what I need to keep him interested in the game since he dislikes Tanking so much!

Vanguard dps is actually really good for pve and i find it pretty fun as well. your friend has 2 options, tactics (dot based sustained spec) or assault specialist (burst dps spec). I personally prefer assault specialist because burst is better overall in operations.

the standard build that I use is 8/2/31, I pick up assault plastique because if time correctly I can do lots of burst damage to soa when his shield is about to go down, again that is just one example but it can be very helpful in other situations.

vanguards have an aoe stun that hits everyone within 8 meters, sticky grenade (hits everyone near the target, mortar volley (ground placed aoe), and pulse cannon (frontal cone aoe).

they can also interrupt but need to be in melee range. a hook that you can pull anyone from far range right on top of you. An aoe taunt, a single target taunt, no aggro dump, and cryo grenade which stuns the target for 4 seconds.

I recently made a blog post that explains the assault specialist spec for vanguards and is pretty detailed, you can read it or show your friend the link is http://www.thearenaverse.com/2012/03/11/331/

I hope it helps

Thank You very Much!!!

Very Helpful! He's gonna stick Vanguard for now...any advice on his rotation? He's pretty new to the MMO world and needs all the help he can get and I'm a Shadow so I have no clue what would be good for a Vanguard...

there isn't a rotation, the highest priority ability is high impact bolt, but he needs to have a dot up to use it so making sure ion pulse or incendiary round are up is ideal. in between high impact bolt he needs to stockstrike and ion pulse for a chance to reset high impact bolt cool down.

Hi,

I am new to MMOs and have no idea about priority order of skills for my Vanguard. What is priority order for the Assault Specialist? It sounds like the only skills needed are high impact bolt, stockstrike and Ion Pulse Cell.

Please elaborate,

Thank you,

I am going to post a tactics builds (in contrast to what people above have said) and explain the rotation (if it can be called that).

You ignore high impact bolt, unload, and actually ignore gut as well (perhaps use it when you want to put a dot on something). The rotation is ion pulse, fire pulse, stock strike, then either pulse cannon or build 5 stacks from ion pulse and then pulse cannon. It is probably the simplest rotation of any dps (even simpler than gravround/tracermissile).

Gearwise, you ignore accuracy like the plague (all of your attacks are tech, which can only be resisted, so accuracy need is minimal), get a high amount of crit and surge if possible. The only important thing with the build is that it needs positioning, because one of your most ammo efficient attacks (pulse cannon) is a channel ability that hits in ac one in front of you. So you need a stationary target and you need to watch out you are not hitting something you don't want to.

Plasma CELL, usually not ion cell. You can run an Ion cell with the assault tree...although I don't feel it's optimal. That being said, some people make it work well...especially in PvP.

The reasons for running the ion cell in assault spec (afaik) are the ability to put guard on someone, and the increase in armor rating for yourself. One huge point though, for PvE, your tank will definitely NOT like the fact that you're running ion cell..... it dramatically increases your threat level, making it more difficult for the tank to hold aggro. Just food for thought. Good luck.
