Pingor
Usually I wouldn't bother asking knowing that more tech power = more damage but the plus side to using a generator and Ion Cell just seem like a massive boost to survivability in PvP. Trading some tech power for 60% more armor, 5% damage reduction and 20% total shield chance seems like it could really work in my favour to keep me alive longer...even though I seem to survive for a while as it is. My question is could this work? Or will I end up losing too much DPS from the shield? Oh also atm I'm only level 15 and tactics spec.
gofortheko
think their is a huge difference using a shield vs a generator. I use a generator since imho shield doenst proc enough to warrant the loss of stats and tech power.
Quesadilla
Currently it isn't a terrible idea to use Ion Cell and a shield in a DPS spec, but I've never used Tactics to DPS so I don't know if you would lose too much DPS from not using High Energy Cell. In Assault Specialist after 1.2 it will be a bad idea to use Ion Cell when trying to DPS because you will lose out on your ability to reset High Impact Bolt. Honestly, at level 15, a shield and Ion Cell is probably a better choice just because you'll be able to stay alive a little bit longer, the stat differences on level 15 generators vs. shields isn't enough to worry about. Later on when you start choosing a spec, it may become more important. Like I said though, I've never used Tactics so I don't honestly know. Seems like Tactics will become more viable to go deep into after 1.2, but we shall have to wait and see on that.
Pingor
Yeah my main thought last night was losing the proc for HIB, I've only played Gunnery Commando and I don't know if Vanguards get anything like Grav Round to make HIB usable. Losing HIB is too much of a risk seeing as most damage is centred around it.

Just a few pointers from a level 50 PvP Vanguard. 1) You can use Ion Cell without a shield. 2) Shields and Dodge have significantly reduced utility in PvP. It only works against abilities under the "Ranged" and "Melee" category. 90% of all endgame abilities are Force or Tech and completely bypass Shields and Dodge. (Even your melee ability, Stockstrike, is a Tech attack.) By giving up your generator in favor of a shield, you essentially give up much DPS and gain NOTHING in PvP survivability. This is not an exaggeration. Edited April 2, 2012 by GitRDone
