Miyaka_Vigiles
I know you can change and upgrade orange gear (put higher mods in it), but one of my guildies said I can do the same to purple gear. I thought artifact gear had fixed stat, or did they change it a while back?
Dragondog
Some purple gear now have removable mods. I haven't tried to put other mods in them though. Edited March 26, 2012 by Dragondog
Etilrellim
There are certain pieces of purple gear that you can fully change mods on. Those would be the Tier Sets at endgame. Almost the rest of the purples level 49 on down are not as fully moddable. You can change the Mod and Enhancement but not the armoring on most of them. Then you also have some that cant be modded at all. 50 pvp and pve Tier Sets: fully moddable 50 pve flashpoint most non tier armor pieces are full moddable 49 on down has some you can do Enhance/Mod 49 on down has some you can't Hope this helps you a bit. TOURDallas
What determines the fixed stats are armoring in armor, hilts in lightsabers and barrels in blasters. You can't replace these in leveling purples, so a level 19 purple, will always only have level 19 base stats. If you upgrade the armoring in an orange armor, the base armor level is increased. Eternalnight
Well the low level purples have a "mod" and "enhancement" that can be removed or replaced, but the stats that would come from barrel/hilt/armoring are fixed and can't be ever changed so their weapon damage and armor rating will always stay the same. Of course the purple versions of certain items that don't have an orange variety at all, such as earpieces, non-weapon offhand items (shields etc.), implants, relics, techblades and so on will not have any mod slots even as purples. (not counting augment slots)

Natarii
50 pvp and pve Tier Sets: fully moddable 50 pve flashpoint most non tier armor pieces are full moddable 49 on down has some you can do Enhance/Mod 49 on down has some you can't Not entirely true. Lvl 50 purples are PARTIALLY modable - you cannot currently remove the Hilt/Barrel/Armoring mod from these items. This is changing with Patch 1.2 and these items WILL be fully modable (but for the time being these key mods are still locked into the item). This goes for pretty much all purple gear pre-patch 1.2; some of the PVP gear is not modable at all (namely weapons). Again, Patch 1.2 changes this whole system and end-game purple gear DOES become fully modable.

It's my understanding that this will only be true for the new purple gear available in 1.2 - the purple gear that is available now as drops or whatever won't be fully modifiable. But I could be completely wrong :-)
