bladechaser
ok as a vanguard i decided that going down the tank route for lvling was the best option for myself and i ended up with this build http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#801G0GrdorogzZMsbZb.1 but now im at lvl 50 and starting to do the dailies and also the pvp stuff to get the gear i want (also my guild is full of tanks) im wondering if its worth switching to a dps build the question i have or should i say several question is 1. is the dps options on vanguard really that effective 2. if i choose to go dps should i choose multiple dps or single target dps (boss fights maybe) 3. is the vanguard a viable dps option or is it one of those class's that dont excell at either class but end up being good off tank and good off dps oh i forgot to mention im in no way pvp geared yet but i am working on it Edited February 7, 2012 by bladechaser
Varena
I've had a play around with the 4/6/31 spec assault specialist in a couple of instances and the single target damage (burst and sustained) is great. Getting a string of HIB resets in a row brings a smile to anyone's face AoE damage is more limited - sticky grenade, pulse cannon, mv, es are about it but they do hit harder than in shield specialist talents/gear. Essentially you trade survivability for a big increase in single target damage, is what I've found. But survivability shouldn't be too much of an issue in solo pve if you take a decently geared Elara along with you. bladechaser
ok for pure dmg then go for the far right tree and hit hard .. but be slightly more squishy
Varena
I've not really tried out the tactics tree in PvE so far. I've read that the damage is underwhelming but looking at the talents, it'd make Pulse Cannon hit like a truck with 5 stacks, along with auto-crit HIB's and free stockstrikes. Probably slightly lower single target damage but higher AoE with the buff to pulse cannon. I'd suggest playing around with both and seeing which you prefer. Blazeric
Also have Ion Cell active in whatever spec you choose. You do lose that much damage compared to Plasma Cell but the extra survive ability you gain from it is awesome which makes you stay in the fight longer. http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#801hMbZ0cZbIbbdGGMs.1 That is the spec I run in PvP with Ion Cell active, I can usually get crits up around 4.5k with close to full champion gear on with HIB. Also in pvp make sure you are still throwing out your taunts everytime they are up. Now for PvE dps have plasma cell on because well you aren't tanking so you shouldn't be taken that much damage. grandmasterub
For pvp I prefer a full tactics build running ion cell. (more of a harassment / guard role, not burst) For pve I prefer a hybrid assault/tactics build running high energy cell. (moar dots) I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head. Been focusing on my shadow lately Edited February 7, 2012 by grandmasterub
VragonBral
Personally, I go this for PvP and PvE. I can mete out damage and still provide guard to squisher targets, and retaining some of my high armor and some DR. http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#801hRMZ0MZbIbrdhGMs.1 I absolutely love it. Crit, Surge, Power and lots of Aim/Endurance. Just be VERY careful about grabbing aggro off your MT. If you must, switch to Plasma Cell.
