Memory Upgrade

I am currently running SWTOR on a windows 7 based system. My vid card is a GTX 580. I have an i5 quad core running at 2.8 ghz & 8gb of RAM (4 x 2gb sticks).

Today, I made the decision to bump to 16gb of RAM (max on my current board).

Do you think it will have an impact in any part of the game?

Nah most likely wont make any difference dude.

IMO anything more than 4gb for a video game is overkill (assuming you aren't running any other application)... And 8gb is way more than enough.

16gb however will be great if you are using video/music production and 3D software (Protools, after effects, Maya, Premiere pro etc...)

Not a bit, went through all that to buy a $500 card but haven't realized that 8 gigs is never EVER used in this game?

+1

Only VERY few specialised applications will load your ram over 4GB

Play the game for awhile - tab out and look in Task manager to see how much memory your using (under the Performance tab) that will tell you if you need to add more or not.

My guess is you will notice no difference unless you like to have 100+ tabs open in your Browser and every program you have installed running at the same time in the background.

Not trying to be rude but only a very poorly coded game will cache data in the manner you described.

Well windows 7 uses about 1.2 gig by itself. Add TOR to that and it will gradually build up your memory usage to over 4 gig within a short amount of time.

I recently upgraded my PC and i was using 4 gig of RAM and that got used very quickly and alt-tabbing out after a while to look at forums etc used to take ages.

My new PC with it's 16 gig RAM has no delay at all.

I never said I was buying 16gb to impact this game. It was a simply a question I wanted to present to those who may have experience with memory upgrades.

I did buy the video card for Battlefield 3 many months ago, per a friend's recommendation.

Thanks to those who provided constructive thoughts! :)

Yeh i see what you are saying but it doesnt actually work that way.

For example:

You are on dromund kaas:- The VRAM on your graphics card will cache most of the data rendered by you GPU (Graphics processing unit). While your RAM will cache data mainly being sent to and from your CPU (Central processing unit)

Once you leave Dromund Kaas to travel to the Imperial Fleet for example... You will get a loading screen in which all data cached for Dromund Kaas will be dumped, in order to begin storing data from the imperial fleet.

No Planet will require to store more than 2gb of data in your RAM at any given time.

Hope this helps.

then how come whilst playing i look at my memory usage after a few hours playing and see it using over 4-5 gig?

I also know what you're saying, but it's basically not what is happening

From what I've seen and been told, you really wouldn't need anything over 8 gigs, even six gigs would be more than enough for regular gaming.

The only time you would really need that much ram is if you're running multiple games at the same time or attempting to do video editing, something to that extent.

wont make any difference, most games dont even use 8gb

the only thing that could increase would be to buy high performance ram with high clocking, preferably somthing from 1666 upwards

Not 100% sure on this but it does sound a bit odd.

I have 16gb (Which i need for work), and while running swtor i have never seen it go above 3.2gb total usage. This is while absolutely no other process running in the background other than what is required.

This game has been known to do weird stuff, using over 4-5gb RAM seems to be part of that list.
