Quarterly Producer Letter for Q2 2024 ×

Please COMPLETELY REMOVE or SEVERELY REDUCE Death Penalties

I agree and in fact I would take it a notch further and say that we should get rewards for dying. Make it so that the easier you die, the better the rewards. This will encourage us to fail better so that we can improve and become masters of failure! Rewards should also scale with time wasted and humiliation. If someone sees you die, you should get extra points. Failure is not an option -- it's a lifestyle!

If you die then you actually wake up a few hours later I think, so maybe you should get rested XP? Unless you are dark side of course, since there is no rest for the wicked. We could also have slow motion replays of the death shown, and an announcer who will commend you with stuff like "Double death", "Multideath!" and "M-m-m-mega death!"

bsod's are 9/10 not related to the game but your own hardware or software either lack of drivers, conflicting drivers, or hardware going bad or faulty hardware was bad when purchased(it happens). I'd advise you to LOOK at your own rig first, get new drivers, insure your removing all old drivers, and if needed upgrade/replace any bad hardware might be going. Are so many reasons this could be happening but it is probably isolated to you specifically.

1. I have more than a dozen machines here. Three of which I play SWTOR on at any given time. None of them go BSOD except when playing SWTOR.

2. This issue is well documented here on the forums per the link I provided in my OP.

3. I don't presume that the problem exists on every single machine SWTOR is played on.

4. Just because this issue isn't presenting itself on your machine or many others does NOT mean that it doesn't exist. It exists.

5. This is a problem with the product itself. Penalties at the higher levels, with purple gear become exorbitant when this happens several times per day.

Let me get this straight so because YOU have problems with BSOD the gear repair should be abolished for a Million plus people until the microscopic amount of people with this problem have it resolved.

...Freakin get ahold of yourself, back to the rubber room with you.

None of what you said negates the post you responded to. Just because a problem is happening to many people and Bioware has asked for details doesn't mean the game is making your machine bluescreen. In fact, in the absence of other issues (either in Windows or in your hardware or drivers), it technically wouldn't be able to.

Nobody is trying to deny that your machine crashes, just that it really can't be a problem with the game alone. Application crashes don't bluescreen machines unless there's also a separate problem somewhere else. The most common causes in those cases are driver bugs and hardware failures.

So let ME get this straight. Just because YOU don't have this problem means that nobody else does and that it doesn't exist?

There is no death penalty.

Gear repair happens just from use and a few seconds to respawn is why everyone thinks this game is stupidly easy. Even if you get killed the enemies you killed stay dead so you get an easier shot and keep going till you make it.

Then there is no reward from not using this method. I have got to the end of Chapter 1 and level 34 without dying and it means nothing. It is why there is so little demand for level 1 to 49 gear cause its much harder work to get the decent equipment than it is to just respawn and work your way through the encounters.

Gear repair is nominal at the lower levels with green equipment. Between 45-50 purple gear costs THOUSANDS of credits per death and multiplies if not fixed after each death. I will get exact numbers the next time this happens.

Repair costs? I don't know of any other death penalty.

I would rather them just fix the random deaths..like every time you take a shuttle on Voss...or the invisible mobs..or the mobs standing in melee range in a clear field that i don't have line of sight on...

This^^ also I'd rather have them remove autodeath after crashing in flashpoints (at least it keeps happening to me and people I play with - get thrown into middle-of-nowhere and before you know it you're dead with just 'return to entrance' and no way for anyone to come and rez you back)

THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH MY MACHINE(S)

This is a problem with SWTOR. It has been documented in many threads and responded to by the developers here:

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?p=1501998#edit1501998

Oh existentialism.

The dev response is telling people to run a hardware dioagnostic on THEIR PC'S and upload the results to them so they can "investigate this further". It is to determine if a certain hardware configuration, ie your machine, is causing the problem. It is in no way a statement that it "is a problem with SWTOR".

This game is cupcake easy as it is. Just because you have a pc configuration that doesn't play with the game, doesn't mean that everyone else has to suffer. I've not had a single BSOD of death on my current PC in over 3 years playing many games, running VMWare and a ton of other apps. I suspect I could be an exception when it comes to stability and I would suspect you are as well.

No, it's a problem with SWTOR. It has been since at least August. We even had a memory leak on Taris that completely hosed machines. Again, all well documented. This problem does not exist with any other application or game.

Pointing fingers at "drivers" or "configuration" issues doesn't make the problem disappear.

During beta people reported their power supplies going dead. There were at least three separate threads on this.

So because your computer has issues with the game, the barely existing penalties for dying should dissapear? O_o

And just because you aren't experiencing this means that it's not happening and that the rest of the players should lose tens of thousands of credits every time they play?

You haven't seen a true penatly until you've played Asherons Call on Darktide. Lols @ this post.

I don't have an issue with the death penalty at all. I have a problem when the death penalty is applied after a CTD or BSOD.

I am not referring to the difficulty of the game. I am not referring to the severity of the current death penalties. I have a problem with the death penalty being applied after a CTD or BSOD.

I am not the only having these problems. This problem is not with my machine, my drivers, my configuration. See below:

Bluescreens can only be generated by faulty hardware or software running in ring 0. CTD's and black screen lockups are different (and can actually be caused by a faulty application).

If you are getting blue screens, I'd start with upgrading your video drivers and then move onto the more obscure stuff.

If you feel especially handy, you can do a bug check analysis using the method shown here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/6302.aspx
