Hello fellow Smugglers,
I'd like to discuss the "fantasy of the Smuggler" and the expectations I had for the class going into the game, and why I've been really disappointed with the overarching Smuggler story. Hopefully other people can share their opinions and help me enjoy the story more!
So, first. To me the fundamental concept of the Smuggler or Spacer to me is of a person with a spaceship who steals and/or transports illicit goods for dangerous folk in order to make money. They're quick witted and quick on the draw, always getting into trouble, want to get paid, etc. Importantly, they don't want to get rule the galaxy or the underworld - they just want to keep flying. They want freedom, and never want to be in one place for long.
That's what I wanted the Smuggler to be about. Instead, here's Bioware's version:
It started out great, I was on an actual Smuggling mission and things went south. I really liked getting my ship stolen and then getting it back. After that though, I thought it took a turn for the worse. Searching for Nok Drayen's treasure was okay I guess, but I felt the story was way too drawn out and it was never made explicitly clear exactly why we needed all these starship parts and why they helped us. I mean, the main plot hook of Nar Shadda, the Smuggler planet, was rescuing some animal from space-PETA. For all its faults though, at least we were still independent and searching for credits.
Now though, I just can't bring myself to care about Act II. A "Republic Naval Privateer"? What does that even mean? We certainly don't do any space missions for our class quest. I don't want to work for the Republic. It feels like I'm the "Republic Agent" like the Imperial counterpart.
At the beginning of the game, NPCs at least called me "Captain". Now I'm typically referred to as "Mercenary". That's not what I thought I was signing up for. Heck, "Bounty Hunter" is honestly a more apt description of this class than Smuggler is.
Does anyone share these concerns? Maybe I was just expecting too much from the start. After all, we are officially in the "Republic" faction, and Han Solo took on a job as General for the Rebels... but still. I love my Smuggler in all the little details, but I'm struggling to enjoy the broad strokes of his story.
