The devs have been pretty adamant about no new classes. I'm fine with that. But at the risk of drawing comparisons to SWG, the widespread consensus is that there is a LOT of room for professions in addition to the ones we get to play.
So here's the idea that hit me in the past week or so: Player Associates.
Bear in mind: these are NOT companions! The companions are living, breathing complements to the character itself. The companions interact with you and with the environment. The companions fight and heal and whatnot. The associates would be none of these things.
So what would associates be and what would they *do*?
Picture an average cantina. A player with a Trooper character activates his associate: in this case (just for sake of argument) it's a dancer. A female, could be of any number of species, and the clothing can be customized. While the player is in the cantina the dancer performs and for a few credits she bestows buffs. The thing is, the player HAS to be in the cantina for this to work. Over in a corner there's a smuggler character who has her own associate working the scene: this one is a slicer who for a few credits can attempt to improve your weapon.
Associates couldn't be spawned just anywhere. There needs to be a specific geographical area for them to come into use. One idea could be a medic who is created in medical centers and provides unique buffs, separate from those from the medical droids.
Associates would not be named. They wouldn't really have "tasks" per se like the companions. But they would be a way to generate a few credits while providing an enriched atmosphere to the game. And let's face it: Star Wars just isn't Star Wars without a lively cantina to visit
