Some jedi can and do use force lightning. For instance, both Plo Koon and Luke Skywalker have used it in the old EU. It's just a different variation of it, as it didn't draw from aggressive emotions, and rather than being blue/purple it was green.

I second that, Red Eclipse is a very well populated server for EU. Plenty of people for PVP, PVE and everything.

In my experience it's been way more entertaining and fun to turn off the L/D indicators, especially if you are playing a non force sensitive class as they aren't always as black and white as the jedi and sith stereotypical are. It immerses you more into the game and gives your character more personality.
