I'm sure this did not slip their minds. Just a hypothesis, but suppose doing so has some risk (such as servers crashing, data loss, etc.), would you truly wish it? I have experience with working on large networked systems and I encountered several problems when someone tried to get smart and keep different versions of a client networked (mostly in the army when there is always a need for systems to remain up and running).

While it would have been nice if they split it, I'm sure BW has a good reason for performing maintenance simultaneously. It might be due to how their server infrastructure works or any other reason that led them to decide to through with this after some consideration. Convenience or spiting you fellas is not the reason. Besides, the maintenance is only a few hours long. Surely there is something productive or fun you can do during this time?

What spamming? If anything, every time I ask if anyone's up for a flashpoint I get 3 replies within 10 seconds.

Developers are not the ones who decide when to release a game. Please stop throwing insults at a group of people who worked very hard to achieve deadlines they might not have been comfortable with.

Search is not enabled for the same reason mods make sure you can't read certain threads.

I've actually seen this mentioned in chat more than once, and it doesn't seem like a terribly difficult thing to implement. That being said, there are priorities, so I expect if we ever see this feature (I hope we do, with animations and everything), it'll probably be in an expansion of a sort.
