  1. Something else you may want to keep in mind is the crew skill bonuses for your class's companions. Here is an in-depth analysis on the subject: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=132015 The quick summary is: Armormech + Scavenging + Underworld Trading is indeed the best crew skill combination for Troopers.
  2. It was officially confirmed in a dev Q&A a while ago. http://www.swtor.com/blog/community-qa-april-27th-2012
  3. I just had to reinstall my computer because of a hard drive crash and decided to try Windows 8. SWTOR runs fine on it - about the same as it did on a newly installed Windows 7, I'd say.
  4. As BeToo above mentioned: there is a pulldown menu on the chat window that lists all the emotes. One of the emote categories is "Moods", you can set your mood by using one of those emotes. I assume that every mood has a /<moodname> command associated, but I've never seen a list of them.
  5. The OP probably means the bonuses you get when you complete a companion's story - surge for melee DPS companion, health for tank, etc. they are bonus fr your character and are active when you don't have a companion out (or even at level 1 when you don't have any companions), so I would assume they do indeed affect PVP. I mean, they are a 1% bonus, not really a huge imbalance.
  6. Your ship allows you to travel to any planet in the galaxy - starting with Taris which is your next mission destination. It also acts like your home of sorts - this is where you can rest (being rested gives you a XP bonus when killing mobs), access your cargo hold, and have conversations with your companions. You can also do space missions on it - it's a shooter-on-rails minigame that gives very good XP and credits for the effort, and it's a pretty good break from the monotony of playing your character. Now I hardly ever think of it, but back when I first got it on my first character I thought it was awesome. You're more than welcome to ask questions in this forum, that's what we're here for. You can also ask in the in-game general chat, or look for a leveling guild, you'll surely find helpful players. Also, I advise to read this great newcomers guide: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=612 Good luck and happy gaming!
  7. This is exactly what happened to me. The videocard overheats, shuts down, and even if the rest of the computer is running ok, the signal to the monitor is lost. It was an old graphics card. First it started after a few a hours of play, then after a few minutes. I ended up replacing it for a newer, faster one and never looked back. It's weird that it happens with a brand new computer though. Either they gave you a faulty graphics card, or the computer case has serious ventilation problems. You should ask the store where you bought it. Search for software that shows video card temperature and check how much it raises when you play - this information will help the tech support people when deciding if they have to change your videocard. Good luck!
  8. He does not have any missions like the other companions, you can only raise his affection with gifts. Precisely because he's only useful for crew skill missions, I think it is important to raise his affection. Higher affection means less time spent on a mission, higher chance to crit, and lower chance to fail; since his main purpose is crafting, why not make him as effective at it as possible. Also, it is worth noting that you can get sensors for him that give him some crafting bonuses. You can get them in two ways: - Buying a vendor droid for your ship and buying the sensor from him. - Grouping with someone who has bought the vendor droid, entering their ship and buying the sensor. The droid costs a million credits, so the second method may be very useful.
  9. I always thought the AP stance is better for trash mobs, since it gives a small but constant DPS boost; while the bleed stance is better for elites and bosses since you don't get the full periodic damage on mobs that die too fast. But the Dissapearing Act thing is a good point. Hmmm...
  10. Well, the game designers seem to share your tastes. There are at least two Nautolan females in the game described as very attractive: the kidnapped dancer in Coruscant and the rude droid's master in Alderaan Republic side. I wholeheartedly support the idea of a Nautolan Sage healer type. A Hutt companion would be as crazy as a Jawa tank... that is, totally awesome.
  11. As far as I know, the only Mastercraft items existing in game are the Legacy items that you get from Inheritance or Birthright items, and the barrels from the Chevin event weapons. The Mastercraft label is a bit misleading - none of those are really player crafted. This of course may change in the future.
  12. Oops, misread. So yeah, you would have to go to the trainer, learn more schematics and raise your Artifice skill. You will see your schematics in the Artifice crafting list change color. Grey schematics do not raise your skill, so you need to make stuff from orange, yellow or green schematics. When you raise Artifice to 400 you will have access to the best schematics. Still, crafting is really better for leveling than for endgame. Getting schematics for the really good stuff takes a lot of work - the same work that you could put into getting the same or better items with PvP or Operations. If you do not particularly enjoy crafting for its own sake, or do not plan on making alts that would benefit from you crafting some good low level gear, I think you are better having only recollection crew skills and selling the raw crystals on the GTN.
  13. a) Yes, to add an augment to a weapon or armor piece you use CTRL+click like any other item modification. But, the item has to have an augment slot. There are two possible ways for an item to have an augment slot: - It was crafted by a player and they got a critical success crafting it. - You can buy or make (with Armstech, Armormech or Synthweaving, not Artifice) an augment kit; go to a modification station; and use it to add the augment slot to an item. b) The crystals you get with Archaeology are used to make items with Artifice or Synthweaving. If you make a crystal with Artifice, the result is different from the crystals used to make them: you can use it on a modifiable weapon to put in the color crystal slot. It will change the color of the saber or the blaster bolts, and more importantly, give it the staf buff stated by the crystal. The main purpose of Reverse Engineering is learning the schematic for a better version of the item. Not all items can be learned - the tooltip will say the % chance of learning it, or "No research available". Getting some crystals back is a byproduct of the action. You can learn schematics from the Artifice trainer - I guess you already know this if you raised your Artifice skill to 400. You can also learn them by Reverse Engineering, or you can get schematics as drops or buy them from the GTN. I think all craftable +41 crystals are learned from schematic drops. I hope this helps. I recommend reading these guides: General guide to Crafting in SWTOR: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=530 Reverse Engineering guide: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=258426 Endgame color crystals and how to make / obtain them: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=505891
  14. I finally read everything (except for a few spoilers). Lots of good stuff! I have playing my Smuggler a lot lately, so I got a bunch of good ones. Hopefully no repeats. On a quest in an early planet, maybe Taris: one of those where you have to enter a building, go through a lot of mob-filled hallways until you get to your objective. I ran into a Guardian that was going the same way, and we grouped so we wouldn't be competing for mobs. We finally reach our destination, where we have to rescue some girl. She starts by saying "Hi, padawan". One of the possible answers was "Padawan?", I picked it, won the roll, and my guy says "I have to stop running around with Jedi, it's worse than being invisible." The fact that there are special conversation lines for specific group configurations is awesome in and of itself. Also, it was a pretty funny moment. Not a line as much as a visual gag. When the Smuggler gets to Alderaan From a mission in Hoth, I think it was the main world mission chain: If I end up as a pair of smoking boots, can I just say "I told you so"? At the end of Chapter II,
  15. Love this thread! Still reading everything before adding my own. I discovered this line by Iresso the other day. Added bonus: since both him and Qyzen use the same gear, I only keep one set for both, and most of the time Qyzen wears it and Iresso stands around the cockpit in his undies. So this line was even funnier (and creepier).
  16. It is the update for the 1.4 version of the game. It does include one of the big new content items that were announced - the Terror from Beyond Operation. But no level cap increase yet, or new questing planet, or Cathar playable species, or HK-51. The patch notes should be in the PTS forum but I cannot find them They should be up at https://account.swtor.com/patchnotes as soon as maintenance finishes.
  17. Using focus is a good idea, but not necessary. There is a keybind called "Select target's target" (Alt+T by default, I think), and F2 always selects the tank in your group. So you can press F2 and then Alt+T (or another key if you change it) to quickly select the tank's target.
  18. Almost correct: - Yes, all the other players are in the same server as you are. There are other similar games in which players of different servers can be together, at least in some zones; but not in SWTOR. - In a PvE server, players need to flag themselves in order to engage in PvP in contested territories, BUT - in a warzone, PvP is automatically active without flagging. And there are places in the world map that fllag you automatically when you enter, such as The Dealer's Den in Tattooine or any base from the enemy faction.
  19. Glad to help. There is a pretty unique feature of SWTOR called Legacy, that basically makes it possible for low level characters benefit in many ways of things achieved by your high level characters. But, this only works for characters in the same server, and you need to end Chapter 1 of the story to unlock it (around level 32). So you should pick one server and character and stay with it for a while. But it's actually good to experiment a little with several of them before focusing on one.
  20. First, let me tell you that your decision is not as irreversible as you think. Your character cannot move from one type server to another, that is correct - but nothing stops you from creating another character in another server. In the character screen there is a server selection button (lower left corner) that takes you back to the server selection screen. The differences are not as significant as you might think. In a PvP server, any time you are in contested territory you may be attacked by a player of the other faction, yes. But you do not even step in contested territory until Nar Shaddaa (around level 20), and even then, the questing zones are not the same for Republic and Empire so you hardly ever see players from the other faction. This changes at later levels but not that much. Most of the PvP combat takes place on Warzones - PvP encounters that you have to explicitly enter. They are available from level 10, no matter the server type. Around level 8 you will find the first Heroic missions - you need to group to complete those, so you'll see groups forming all the time. Starting with level 10 you can queue for Warzones, as mentioned, or Flashpoints - separate missions for which you need a 4 people group and usually involve beating a series of "bosses". That is the majority of grouping and player interaction you will experiment, no matter the server type. I am not familiar with RP servers, but from what I understand, there is no real mechanic difference; players are just expected to behave differently - acting always like they are their character. That may or may not mean more and/or better player interaction. Like I said, you can create a character in another server at any time and see if that is what you are looking for.
  21. Not a lot, but: - At that level you can probably solo Black Talon. If you take Kaliyo with you and pick the right answers, you can get lots of affection with her. - You'll get a few orange drops. The mods in them will be way low for your level, but you can upgrade them for you and your companions. - You get a nice amount of credits for little work. - You get low level commendations that you can exchange for gear that maybe your alts can use, or you can sell it on the GTN. - If you group with someone else you'll get some easy social points, particularly from BT - not sure if this still works, I read that they removed it some time ago. Can someone confirm?
  22. They were definitively jerks. But it never hurts to read up on FP encounters before going in. You can find most of them at http://www.torhead.com , in the comments section; but sometimes you have to look for the FP mission, sometimes for individual bosses, it's a bit of a pain. Dulfy has great guides for most anything SWTOR at her site: http://dulfy.net/flashpoint-guides/
  23. 1. The traditional way is: - First, do all the Ilum, Belsavis and Black Hole dailies at least once, including the planet storylines. Spend the Daily Commendations to get purple barrel / hilt and armorings. That should make you ready for Hard Mode flashpoints. - Then do a few Hard Mode flashpoints. By using Group Finder you will get Black Hole commendations. Get one or two pieces of BH gear. - With this you should be ready for Story mode Operations. 2. You can queue for WZs or Ops while being solo, but a full group needs to form. 3. Story mode is what "normal mode" Operations are called - just an easier version of the Hard Mode ones. I guess they have that name because you'll be mainly interested in seeing the Op storyline content, since the fights are less challenging and the rewards less valuable. The Operations progression should be: - First, Story mode Eternity Vault and Karagga's Palace. - Then, Hard Mode EV / KP. - Story mode Explosive Conflict (Denova) - Hard Mode EC. When 1.4 arrives, Terror from Beyond is supposed to be balanced for players that have done HM EC.
  24. Ziost Shadow for Empire, Gav Daragon for Republic. You can sorta sidestep the Rakata requirement by piling up Black Hole commendations and getting BH gear, which is supposedly a bit superior to Rakata. But doing HM EV and KP first is probably a good idea anyway.
  25. I think that the problem is, the dropdown list only shows gear in your inventory or equipped by you, but NOT equipped by your companion. You have to unequip it; once it's in your inventory you can apply the augment kit.
