  1. Hello all,

First of all I have to say that this is only my second experience with MMO's, the only one I have played before was Star Wars Galaxies as I'm a huge SW fan.

So far I have to say that I really enjoyed leveling my Jedi Sentinel to 50. It was a nice journey and I really enjoyed the game. Right now I'm leveling my Sith Assassin and its also a great story and a lot of fun.

The thing is I have not done a lot of Flashpoints and I'm not into PVP mostly because I lack experience and I'm afraid to ruin the experience for my team if I do bad but the other day I was on Ilum for the first time checking out the planet and I clicked on another level 50 Sentinel and was amazed that he had over 20'000 health points where my Sentinel stands at around 13'000.

Question is: does this difference apply to armor and gear only? Did I something wrong in the leveling?

I guess if I want to gear up I have to start Flashpoints and PVP? Any advice on where to start?

Maybe this questions are a bit stupid but as I said, I dont have a lot of experience in MMO's and I'm searching for advice how to continue from now on as I really would like to stick around in the game but dont want to stink at it, lol.

    Greets :)

Flashpoints and PvP are indeed the best way to improve your gear when you reach 50. But first, go to the PvP terminal on Fleet. One of the missions you will get there can be delivered immediately and will reward you with a full set of Recruit MK-2 gear. This is mainly intended for PvP, but will probably be better even for PvE than the gear you are wearing.

Use the Group Finder and see what normal level Flashpoints are available for your level. Then look up guides for them and try to learn the tactics for the boss encounters. Then join the queue and wait for the group to form.

Normal mode Flashpoints at level 50 are quite easy and forgiving, so you will learn them without too much trouble. You will also get some nice gear, although probably not much better than your Recriut pieces.

Once you've done every FP at least once, you're ready to try the Hard Modes. These are a bit more difficult - enemies take more hits and do more damage, but tactics are the same, so you should be fine. HM FPs will dfionitely improve your gear.

As for PvP, unfortunately level 50 is a bad place to start. Everyone from level 10 to 49 is grouped in the same warzones, and bolstered to the stats of a level 49; since there aren't big differences in gear at those levels, the playing field is reasonably leveled. But if you start playing with the 50s, it's very likely that you find yourself against experts with the best gear and die constantly - not much fun. I'd advise you to try PvP with your Assassin first until you get a feel for the warzones and the challenges of fighting human opponents.

    Have fun!

  2. I have leveled one character with a mix of missions, FPs and space, and another one just with missions. I recently rolled a Vanguard tank and tried a different leveling route: only class missions, FPs and heroics. I am finding this MUCH faster - but then, I spent about a million credits in Legacy perks for XP boosts. Still, I think you guys will do great trying this, specially if you always have time to play together. Besides, doing solo content in group is a little boring, and doing group content with close friends is a blast. :)
  3. Also, on an unrelated note, once I unlock HK on one character, how do I get him to be able to be used on other characters?

There is a Legacy perk that you can unlock once you have done the main HK-51 quest on one character,: Buying this Legacy perk makes HK-51 accessible to that character. I think it costs 1 million credits, so you'll have to focus on dailies for a few days first. :) It can also be bought with Cartel Coins.

  4. Just the armor type. Some have a specific armor type (light, medium of heavy), so you should be careful to select the best type your class can actually wear. Others are adaptive, which means any class or companion can wear it and the automatically have the highest armor rating for the class.

Also, some specific gear pieces (early PVE and PVP sets) have set bonuses attached to them, instead of the armoring, so keep that in mind.

  5. Is it me or has any one else had a problem searching for things on the GTN? I was able to search for might hilt but not might hilt 4 for example. When I used the first term it had the search bright and highlighted but when using the second it dark or grey out. I tried with a couple of different items and found it all to be the same.

This really make it hard to find the right level of item that you are looking to buy and I hope that this is not some new feature that we will have to live with....

This also happened to me. I noticed a small error message: "All search keywords must be 3 characters or longer". The "4" in "might hilt 4" is considered a 1 character keyword and not allowed anymore. So yeah, it is apparently a "feature" where we cannot search for particular level items anymore. I have to say, not a fan... :(

  6. Hello

I have few question on this thread:

is't difficult to lvl as pure healer spec?

If i will choose to lvl as a healer (operative/scoundrel) (sorcerer/sage) can i lvl with dps companion or ii should stick with tank only.

Maybe a bit slower than DPS spec, but not difficult, no. It's more like easy mode - you and your companion are unkillable.

I find using a tank companion is easier, but a DPS one may be more efficient.

  7. You can take the mods out of the Elite War Hero gear piece, put them into your augmented War Hero piece, and you will have the stats and bonuses of EWH plus the augment.

The only reason you should put another augment slot on the EWH piece, is if you like its look better.

  8. These are good guides:

    http://www.swtor-spy.com/companions/

    http://www.torhead.com/companions

In both cases the info on where you get each companion is a bit indirect to get at, but it's there.

SWTOR-Spy tells you on which mission you get the companion; click on it and you'll see the planet and intended level for the mission.

On TorHead, see the comments tab for each companion. You will always find a comment that tells you on which planet you get them.

  9. I think you have to right-click it - since the cursor does not change, this may be confusing.

The tip about the mission log is good - maybe it needs it to not be full, but does not show a message when it is. (Which would be a bug / oversight worthy of a ticket in itself, IMHO.)

  10. Aha and how to use custom emotes?

You can type, for instance , "/me does something really cool", and the chat box will show (to you and players nearby):

    Sakica does something really cool

As far as I know, there is no way to attach this to existing animations, voiceovers or face expressions. But it's something.

  11. Let's see if I can clear up this bit of confusion:

    - Sage's melee attacks do not scale well with your stats. They will always be weak, no matter how good your lightsaber's stats are. You are a ranged class.

    - As mentioned, a higher rating on the hilt means a higher value of force power on the lightsaber. Now, force power raises a bit the damage of saber attacks, and *also* raises a *lot* the damage and healing of your ranged force abilities. So you want to upgrade your lightsaber as much as possible, even if you should never have to hit anyone with it.

Yes, get Resolve hilts with as high level and rating as possible.

    Hope this helps!

  12. The popular conspiracy theory is, since they just introduced the vehicle with extra knock-off protection, they want subscribers to pay extra for CC to get it, and they are "mistakenly" delaying our monthly coins until they meet their sales quota.

But, since we have no way of knowing, we might as well give them the benefit of the doubt. They probably screwed up somewhere in the code... they've been known to do that on occasion. I suspect today's unscheduled maintenance may have something to do with it, so luckily we will get our coins soon!

  13. Rooof and Redfurry I really appreciate all the info and advice on crew skills. Since you both said Dipo was good to do, I'm thinking maybe that and Biochem with Slicing? /QUOTE]

Here's the thing. Basic schematics for Biochem use materials gathered with bioanalysis; schematics for the good stuff (blue and purple items) use materials gathered with bioanalysis and diplomacy. Possibilities are:

    - Biochem, bioanalysis and diplomacy: self-sufficient crafter, but you miss the credits and mission discoveries from slicing.

    - Biochem, bioanalysis and slicing: you can level biochem and use basic stims, which are nice; and buy diplomacy materials if you get a blue schematic. You get the beneifits from slicing.

    - Biochem, diplomacy and slicing: you will need to buy from the GTN all the materials to make basic schematics. You get the benefits from slicing and diplomacy (LS/DS points)

It is a bit of an odd choice , but it is viable.

  14. To make the most money ouf of slicing:

    - Gather all the slicing nodes around the game world, as already mentioned.

    - Send your companions on slicing missions. The sliced parts missions will return augment parts, and augment schematics on critical success. The lockbox missions will return lockboxes (which contain cash for about the same cost of the mission), and mission discoveries on critical success.

    - If you get a slicing mission discovery ,use it: you will "learn" a new slicing mission that returns more of everything and is guaranteed to crit. It is only one use though.

    - Everything else (augment parts, schematics and mission discoveries for other crew skills), sell on the GTN. Low level augment schematics sell for 8.000 to 20.000 credits on my server, which is a lot of money for a low level character.

I second the advice to make your first character a gatherer. A good mission skill to pick is Diplomacy. The materials sell pretty well, and also, the missions give you light or dark side points, which in turn give you access to nice leveling relics (items roughly equivalent to WoW's trinkets), some nice titles, and in the case of the dark side, an evil look. :sy_darkside:

  15. Most of it is on the server, yes. The only things that are saved to your PC are:

    - UI settings.

    - Graphics, sounds, etc. configuration.

    - Screenshots you may have saved.

If you don't mind to set that up again, you don't need to backup anything. Otherwise you have to backup:

<my documents>\Star Wars the Old Republic for screenshots

    <my user>\appdata\Local\swtor for settings

(Directory paths may vary slightly depending on your version of Windows)

  16. I've recently walked away from an mmorpg and tried this one. It was an easy move. I've decided to go pve because on the last game I played it was either the hunter or hunted. I'm a nice guy so guess where I stood. Any hoo, I like the consular class and am thinking sage. The last game I played, healers were perfect or tormented by their team. I was wondering, with a decent background in dps, should I dump the idea of being a sage and go shadow? I've been in swtor for about a week so I know little on how to play this game, learning by trial and error(mostly error). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

One thing that separates SWTOR from other games, is that since you are running with a companion, it is much more viable to level as a healer, since your companion will put the DPS you lack. Also, you will need to heal your comp quite often, so you will practice healing during the whole leveling process.

If you research the fights a bit before jumping into a Flashpoint, and take the time to learn your skills, I think you'll be fine. Try healing, it's fun. :)

  17. Hi! My father and I are new to this game and are struggling with the learning curve. We want to play together, but are different classes. So we start on different planets. How do we find each other and play cooperatively? How do we go on "raids" or conquer "dungeons?" ( or whatever the Star Wars name for them is) How do we form a guild? Do we have to have a certain level of experience? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi and welcome to the game!

There are 8 classes and 4 starter planets, so you can choose the 2 classes that start on the same place and play together from the very beginning:

    - Jedi Knights and Jedi Consulars start on Tython

    - Troopers and Smugglers start on Ord Mantell

    - Sith Warriors and Sith Inquisitors start on Korriban

    - Imperial Agents and Bounty Hunters start on Hutta

At any rate, this only lasts for the first 10 levels. Then, you character's story takes you to the Empire or Republic Fleet, when you can meet your dad's character if he started somewhere else, and you can go together from then on.

When you are both in game, each of you can add the other as a "friend" - this will make the game notify you when the other logs on and off, and allow quick access to send a group invite. When you are in a group, you can see which planet the other is on, and if you're both on the same planet, you can see where he is on the map, so it's easy to find each other.

"Dungeons" in SWTOR are called Flashpoints. You can do the first one at level 10 - it's actually the natural way to go from the Fleet to the capital world. You can pick up the relevant mission and go into the Flashpoint zone just as any other mission. Or you can also use Group Finder, that will look for players for you and teleport everyone to the start of the FP once the full 4 people group is set up.

In order to form a guild, you have to talk to the guild NPC at Fleet or the Capital World. You need to create a group of four people not in a guild, and talk to the NPC while you in a group. Also, pay some in-game credits. You need to be level 10 in order to get to the Fleet, but I don't think there are any more requisites.

Hope this helps. Have fun! If you happen to be on The Red Eclipse server, say hi and I'll be glad to help. :)

  18. Hey!

I'm fairly new to the game and recently a started a healer sage character, who is now at level 31, just got healing trance. I looked around some guides, tried to learn and practice, but I still have some questions for which I couldn't find any answers. My questions apply to pve battles, primarily to flashpoints, maybe heroics.

    1. Do I understand correctly that the tank is the most important member to heal? If yes, then what exactly does that mean? For example what if some aoe hits the tank and the 2 dps and their health goes down to 30%. I should heal the tank first, right? But for how much? Back to 90-100% and only after that should I heal the 2 dps? Or if only the tank is taking damage then should I leave the 2 dps alone and just focus on the tank? What if a dps is down to 10%? Then I should heal him first, right? Or does the tank still get priority? Is it better to sacrifice a dps just to keep the tank alive? I guess there are no general rules for this, but some hints would be still welcome.

    2. My biggest problem so far was actually taking care of myself. I tend to not pay enough attention to my health bar and heal only the other 3 group members. So what if for example we all are down to 30% health? Should I still heal the tank first and after that myself? What's the correct order here?

    3. Sometimes when adds enter a boss fight they run directly at me and start attacking me after I cast a healing spell (any). Is that my fault? What should I do about it? Is it better to run around from these, or should I just stay in place, heal myself and wait for the tank to take them off me?

Edit: Also general question for point 3: If those adds aren't some low health ones, then what do I do? Let's say we fight 3 of them (they are roughly the same strength), everything goes well, then one of them decides do attack me. Do I run around? Do I stay in place and resume normal healing and hope someone will get it off me?

The tank gets priority, yes, but it depends a bit on the situation. If either the tank or the healer dies, most likely the rest of the group will fall, unless the fight was almost over; if a DPS dies the combat can usually be finished, but it is obviously not ideal. In your "all at 30%" example: if everyone is taking damage from multiple mobs, a continuous AoE effect, etc. then you should try to heal everyone evenly, starting with the tank. But if it was a one-off AoE attack, and after that only the tank will be taking damage, it's better to top off the tank first.

The tank and the rest of the group should try and keep mobs off you, but they may not react immediately. If you get attacked, you can:

    - Use Force Wave (the frontal cone AoE you have since level 3) to knock weak mobs to the ground. By the time they are standing up again, the DPS should be killing them.

    - Use Force Armor (your "bubble") on yourself. That should keep you alive long enough for the rest of the group to pick up the adds.

    - Use Cloud Mind. This skill lowers your "threat" i.e. how threatening you are to the mobs. They will attack the most threatening of the team, so when you use Cloud Mind they will probably go for the tank.

    - If all else fails, try to get near the tank so s/he can pick up the mobs without having to move - most tank abilities are short range.

    - There's a skill that heals yourself instantly, but I'm not sure if you have it at level 31.

    Hope this helps!

  19. Another dumb question: I guess my sentinel can use two lightsabers. Can I just buy a new one? If so, where? Do I have to build it? If so, how?

When you spoke with the advanced class trainer and became a Sentinel, you received a bag in your inventory that contained a second lightsaber. Both this one and the one you receive before leaving Tython are moddable, so you can keep them through all the game and upgrade their mods as you level.

If for whatever reason you do not have your second lightsaber anymore, I think you can get a level 14 one from the Coruscant Equipment Commendations vendor. Check carefully, because some lightsabers are mainhand only and cannot be used as a second one. Artificers can make moddable level 20 ones and will probably sell you one for cheap, either directly or through the GTN. And green quality sabers drop from mobs or are given as mission rewards from time to time.

  20. Hello both, and welcome to the game!

    1. RP servers are a bit special. They tend to be less populated, since not so many people prefer that way of playing. And most RP communities tend to organize events and play them out, so they hardly use either the General chat or Group Finder - which may make the server looks less populated than it is. Your best bet is to find a Guild, or try the non-RP servers.

By the way, world PvP is fairly inconsequential in this game, since the quest areas on most worlds are separated and far apart for Empire and Republic. You can keep to your area and level with hardly anyone bothering you, or you can go to the other faction's turf and look for trouble if you feel like it.

    2. I have only a Sage healer, so I cannot help you much firsthand with choosing one of the three healers. But be careful with the class names:

    - The mirror class for Trooper is Bounty Hunter, and the mirror for Smuggler is Imperial Agent. It took me a while to get those straight - somehow it fells counterintuitive. :) Healer Advanced classes are Commando / Mercenary and Scoundrel / Operative.

    - Jedi Consular / Sith Inquisitor are mirror classes; Sage / Sorcerer are mirror advanced classes.

    - Once you pick and Advanced Class you cannot ever change it - So a Consular / Inquisitor may become a tank (if Shadow / Assassin) or a healer (if Sage / Sorcerer), but the same character cannot be both.

    3. Yes, it is normal that your crafting overlevels your character - specially if you keep getting gathering materials through missions. If you rely on what you gather from the game world, you will not get the materials for the superior items until you are high level enough to go to the worlds where they can be collected.

    Good luck and enjoy!
