The problem nowadays is the combination of hype meets gloom and doom. Every new MMO on the horizon is the next great thing, every pre-existing one is wrought it flaws threatening it's imminent destruction. Many of these flaws are very real and present, not foolish enough to write them off as nonissues. That said, I can remember when Warhammer, Conan, and Rift were all supposed to be that 'next great mmo' that ultimately failed to meet expectations. Some were impacted more by the flaw side (Conan) but all were a combination of flaws and overhype netting the expectation of something revolutionary. What happens now is a certain cross hatching of nostalgia and burnout that throws a whole lot of mixed messages into the lot (I wish it did X, Y, and Z like this game--- but A, B, and C are too similar to that game). Every game has certain elements you can cherry-pick as what you would like to see in your ideal MMO, along with commonalities that one wishes did not exist. Ultimately nothing will meet either the hype or the gloom and doom, most will now stabilize somewhere in a middle ground. The era of an all-consuming Juggernaut of an MMO a la WOW from late vanilla through early WotLK is quite unlikely to exist in the current climate, as it will now be about a solid share over market dominance. Because of this there will always be a new MMO on the horizon that on paper looks like the latest and greatest, while existing flaws in current ones will be even more victimized by a 'grass is greener' syndrome because of the variety of mid-large market MMO choices.
