  1. I'm sure it depends on what kind of player you are. I'm not a soloer. I push to max level as fast as possible and do group content. Really don't have any interest in anything else. From my perspective, the thing that I was disappointed with in WoD was that there was fewer dungeons than usual. Doing group finder around level 98-100 you were stuck doing mostly Skyreach over and over and over. And they didn't really make new exclusive hard modes either. I miss them doing that in swtor too.

its just I was thinking, as badly as the game is aging - its playerbase aging is actualy to their advantage, becasue I know of a lot of people playing it as families with their kids. people who have been leaving not because they are too busy, but becasue new content is less fun.

Older people with families tend to play differently though. We used to play for hours on end through to morning doing the most mundane things like just wander around exploring or killing the same group of mobs over and over just to get rep. We don't have the time energy to do that anymore. We don't have the money to spend on multiple accounts. It's more play a little here, let someone else play a little there, unsub when nothing's going on, move over to another f2p MMO in the meantime.

  2. WoD wasn't a bad expansion. Most people agree that WotLK was the best, and none of the subsequent ones have lived up to it, whether it's fan nostalgia or just the fact that the game isn't getting any younger and neither are its players. I think they've all been equally fun and somewhat disappointing in some aspects.

The current MMO model is certainly on the decline - personally, I don't think we're going to have the next big thing until technology steps up a bit more. VR will probably be the real new frontier in RPG gaming, and we need internet that is able to handle large amounts of graphical data lag-free.

  3. Perspective is a fascinating thing in this regard.

If on Nov. 22, 2004, the day before WoW launched, someone had told Blizzard "hey, in ten-and-a-half years, your MMO is going to have 5.6 Million people still playing it, it's going to hold a bigger portion of the marketshare than every other MMO on the market (by a significant margin), and it's going to have made over $800,000,000 in revenue over the previous year" ... well, they'd probably have thought those projections were so optimistic that they were flat-out ludicrous.

Yeah, as a matter of fact, when they launched the game they were expecting 500,000 subs max. They had no idea it would be the most successful MMO by far for 10 years and probably beyond.

  4. People just don't have the time and loyalty to just stay subbed when there's no more planned content, now that the player base is older and there are a ton of other MMO and multiplayer options out there.. They said they're done releasing content until the next expansion, which currently has no release date. Still, 5.6 million subscriptions is quite a lot of steady money coming in. Most likely that once the new xpac is released, it'll jump back up to 8-9 million.
  5. This makes me feel nostalgic.

Almost makes me want sections of Soa's floor to randomly disappear after a wipe and to be unluckily dropped on top of a pile of static balls that were chasing me down before being picked up. (that was probably 1.1 or something I don't remember)

  6. Really nice of you to not announce this beforehand but letting all the players spend the full CC.:

Even if they said "starting 3 months from now", anyone who transferred before today would still be in the same boat. Had they announced this a month prior, there would still be people who just happened to transfer just prior to the announcement. So I don't see any point to this complaint.

  7. All of the companions are now voiced by Gilbert Gottfried. All of them.

    lol. :)

Well Kaliyo voice actress tweeted something within the past couple months about it. Not sure about others.

Tanna Vikk's voice actor is dead so..

    Aw, that's sad.

I recall Charles was tweeting about recording sessions with new and old VA back in March, I assume it was for this. I just want to know if my character is still going to talk and sound the same. :) Because there's never a guarantee with that forever.

  8. Just call us different. I thought this season DIDN'T deliver on expectations of just being a good season. I give it a rating of 5 or 6 out of 10. I felt it was "ok", not "good". I never had an expectation that it would deliver on a level MORE than the last few years. In fact, my expectations were actually lower and they failed to meet that. Not Capaldi personally, the show didn't meet my standard level expectations overall. There were some brilliant episodes where I thought they were getting back on track but then we had episodes like Robin Hood and the moon egg (seriously, moon egg?).

Yeah, different. I'd give it an 8/10. Whereas I'd give season 2 a 5/10 in comparison. Yes, the Robin Hood episode was kind of lame, though fun (typical Gatiss episode) and the science aspect of Kill the Moon was goofy, and I could easily forget about "In The Forest of the Night", but then, remember, as I listed before, Love and Monsters? The Idiot's Lantern? Fear Her? They're all worse than ANY of the episodes in season 8. Also, Curse of the Black Spot, Silver Nemesis, half of season 1 and 3, The Sontaran Strategy/Poison Sky, Planet of the Dead, The Beast Below, etc.. all poop....Doctor Who always has poop! At least for someone. Maybe you thought those were all great. Then I divert back to people just have different opinions. I know people that think this is their favorite season ever, and some that think it's absolutely the worst.

There are some interesting articles out in the past few days where Moffat does see the lower ratings but attributes it to DVR and streaming. That very well could be the case but for me, PERSONALLY, it felt like a disjointed season.

Some articles out there really did a poor job in quoting Moffat, with click bait titles. He actually said that ratings haven't dropped, just that *overnights* are down slightly, while the overall reach including timeshifts are much higher, and iplayer downloads don't even factor in that, which are increasing each season as well (compare a few hundred thousand in 2005 to nearly 2 million now). Another complicated statistic to add in is that they currently don't track computer/mobile/tablet devices, which are actually the majority of devices used for iplayer.

TL;DL, the ratings have remained remarkably consistent for a 10 year old show, and we're seeing a shift in the way people watch TV in general. Less people watch live, more people DVR and download. Ratings in worldwide markets such a the US and AUS are also increasing.

Here is a breakdown of the ratings for the season, if you're curious.

As we're at the end of the run, how about something new?

Note: timeshift here refers to all post live viewers, not post overnight viewers as we often mean when we use the term.

    Consolidated = Live + 7 Day Timeshift (% timeshifted)

    1. 9.169m = 5.151m + 4.018m (43.82%) - Deep Breath
    2. 7.286m = 3.762m + 3.523m (48.35%) - Into the Dalek
    3. 7.277m = 3.645m + 3.632m (49.91%) - Robot of Sherwood
    4. 7.011m = 3.669m + 3.342m (47.67%) - Listen
    5. 6.993m = 3.583m + 3.409m (48.75%) - Time Heist
    6. 6.820m = 3.801m + 3.019m (44.27%) - The Caretaker
    7. 6.914m = 3.689m + 3.225m (46.64%) - Kill the Moon
    8. 7.111m = 3.986m + 3.125m (43.95%) - Mummy on the Orient Express
    9. 6.712m = 3.650m + 3.062m (45.62%) - Flatline
    10. 6.921m = 3.827m + 3.094m (44.70%) - In the Forest of the Night
    11. 7.340m = 3.913m + 3.428m (46.70%) - Dark Water

    Consolidated = Live + 28 Day Timeshift (% timeshifted)

    1. 9.529m = 5.151m + 4.378m (45.94%) - Deep Breath
    2. 7.672m = 3.762m + 3.910m (50.96%) - Into the Dalek
    3. 7.707m = 3.645m + 4.062m (52.71%) - Robot of Sherwood
    4. 7.426m = 3.669m + 3.757m (50.59%) - Listen
    5. 7.378m = 3.583m + 3.795m (51.44%) - Time Heist
    6. 7.175m = 3.801m + 3.374m (47.02%) - The Caretaker
    7. 7.248m = 3.689m + 3.559m (49.10%) - Kill the Moon
    8. 7.472m = 3.986m + 3.486m (46.65%) - Mummy on the Orient Express

Without knowing the breakdown for Death in Heaven, Robot of Sherwood comes closest to a 50/50 split, between live and timeshift, on 7 day figures. Though even Deep Breath acquired nearly 44% of its viewers from timeshift.

Over 28 days, however, 4 of the first 8 episodes had less than half their viewership live.

This is all without taking into account, of course, second screen iPlayer viewers and those viewing repeats.

    Also:

Day 8 to 28 Increase in Consolidated Ratings (+percentage increase/percentage of total ratings)

    1. 9.169m + 0.360m = 9.529m (+3.93%/3.78%) - Deep Breath
    2. 7.286m + 0.386m = 7.672m (+5.29%/5.03%) - Into the Dalek
    3. 7.277m + 0.430m = 7.707m (+5.91%/5.58%) - Robot of Sherwood
    4. 7.011m + 0.415m = 7.426m (+5.92%/5.59%) - Listen
    5. 6.993m + 0.385m = 7.378m (+5.51%/5.22%) - Time Heist
    6. 6.820m + 0.355m = 7.175m (+5.21%/4.95%) - The Caretaker
    7. 6.914m + 0.334m = 7.248m (+4.83%/4.61%) - Kill the Moon
    8. 7.111m + 0.361m = 7.472m (+5.08%/4.83%) - Mummy on the Orient Express

But anyway, I have my issues with Moffat's writing, and some of the direction of the show in general. There are things I really want to see change. But IMO this season was a step in the right direction in many ways.

  9. This here is an example of Blizzard doing something right.

    WoW Community:

I know how much everyone was looking forward to this expansion, and once you were able to get in and start having fun, all the comments I've seen indicate that this is one of our best yet. But the quality of the content does not excuse the subpar launch experience we delivered, and I apologize for that.

The first two days of the expansion were not a great experience, with many of you facing high queues or significant gameplay problems. We worked around the clock to tackle the demand issues and technical challenges, and fortunately things started looking better on Saturday. While millions of you were able to get in and play over the weekend, with many already reaching level 100, others still ran into very lengthy queues, particularly on the highest-population realms.

To help address this, we’ve expanded the new instancing tech we used to improve queues on Saturday and we’re continuing the process of applying that to raise the capacity of all realms again. This will result in approximately double the prelaunch capacity on each realm, which should greatly reduce queue times for most realms if not eliminate queues altogether.

In recognition of the difficulties so many of you ran into when trying to play over the first few days, we're adding five days’ worth of extra time to every subscription in the Americas, Oceania, and Europe that was active as of Friday, November 14. Things are already in a much better place than they were going into the weekend, so I hope you’ll now be able to focus on having a ton of fun with this expansion.

I also hope you'll accept my apology and keep your faith in us. The support voiced by many of you as we worked through the challenges was immensely appreciated. We're extremely grateful to be part of such a passionate community. We love World of Warcraft, and we're very proud of this expansion, so stumbling out of the gates like this was very disappointing for all of us.

On behalf of the World of Warcraft development team, as well as everyone at Blizzard, thank you all again for your patience and understanding.

    See you in Draenor.

    Sincerely,

    J. Allen Brack

    Executive Producer, World of Warcraft

  10. I'm not whitewashing it so much as just accepting that it's unlikely that Doctor Who will suddenly deliver on a level that it never has in 51 years. Seasons are up and down, some crap, some gold, with varying degrees. You just hope the gold will outweigh the crap. I think that was true of season 8, and I can't say that about every season.

I am tired of Clara who as well, but not nearly as tired as I was of Rose Who. Glad that only lasted two seasons. Oh wait, the Doctor spent the whole next season missing her, than she came back the next season again.

  11. yep, that was my thought as well :p they also seemed to have been playing a little too much Borderlands, given mini introduction cutscenes for zone bosses and some of the important friendly npcs :p

and I may be reaching (but given nods to plants vs zombies and the whole pet battle pokemon system... may be not) I swear Garrison invasions are at least partly inspired by Clash of Clans.

that aside... and I don't say these things lightly.. but they really took to heart the fact that people do love well told stories in quest form.. stories in Draenor are several times better than Cata and Pandaria combined. some of the chains remind me of now defunct epic vanilla chains that got me hooked on WoW in a first place, almost a decade ago. but better executed.

    .

Yes, no doubt they borrowed a LOT from other games...but they did it well. And I am actually really enjoying the expansion more than the last two as well. Having your character be more at the center of the story helps. The new cut scenes are pretty epic too. That's something they've definitely come a long way with! Though I have to say that one of the things that has made me the most happy is the inventory improvement. The reagent bank, the toy collection, better stacking, bag cleanup/instant organization button (they had addons for the last one, but the less addons I have to get the better). They also implemented group loot last xpac, which was one of those things swtor had that I was like, "why the hell do other MMOs not do this".

  12. Quote:

"I think I figured out why WoW is viewed as such a superior game to the masses "

The only ones that see WoW as a superior game are the mindless WoW junkies trying to justify their return to that game for the WoW expansion.

I played WoW to level 12. I wasn't impressed enough to progress any further. So much for a "superior" product, huh?

That's a good example of an individual having a different opinion. Also an example of someone who has to insult others to make a point, which is lame.

speaking of WoW as a superior product.

just logged in on my monk after queue finally finished and this is what I saw in Chat (Geshee is my monk, the rest of the names are blacked out because well.. I'm fairly sure you are supposed to preserve privacy and all that)

in the middle of now common grumbling about not being able to get into Draenor, Garrison, etc - WoW has been called as SWTOR clone. and then explanation why followed. as well as wishes that WoW had huttball.

and these from what I could see were not people like me, who mainly play TOR and visit WoW every once in a while.

    so... yeah :p

Funny! It sounds like they borrowed the bonus objective quest idea too.
