  1. Guardians feel very powerful until about 35; then every fight turns into a battle of attrition - at least with a tank spec. This is especially true if you use Doc. While your chances of dying are very low, you will find your and and wrist hurting from clicking so many buttons for each pack.

    I couldn't disagree more.

By 37 tank spec not only have you gotten access to Opportune Strike and Pommel Strike (both very hard hitting mob-clearing abilities), but you're also high enough to start putting points into the talent that nets you more Focus from Soresu. I was so used to the amount of Focus Soresu built that now I feel like I have a tremendous overflow.

Leap into a pack, drop the first guy with Opportune Strike + Bladestorm (giving you blade barrier through talents which absorbs damage), drop a Force Sweep to damage and stun the remainder and hit the next guy with Pommel Strike. Finish him off with a Slash and wipe up the final dude with Master Strike and you'll be tearing through groups with no problems.

I've noticed that the higher level that I get the more damage I put out.

  2. I'm 37 and I've run with Artifice and overall was pretty disappointed. Haven't maxed it out but I feel like I've spent a lot of money on Artifice, Archaeology and Treasure Hunting combined and very little to show for it. By Tatooine you start getting very strong enhancement parts from quests that outdid what I was able to craft. I don't have a single thing on my character that I've actually crafted despite my crafting skill being on par for my level. It's awesome seeing a giant glowing crystal and tearing it down to assemble a lightsaber, but in actual practice it's pretty effin lame for me so far.

I'm seriously considering dropping it and leveling Biochem just to have the reusable med packs and stims. I'm getting literally nothing from having Artifice.

  3. Sounds like you're doinig fine to me. I'm 37 and tank spec and I roll with Kira (just got Doc, our healer, so don't have experience with him yet). T7 is bad *** for sure but I didn't need the extra tank and with Kira I have had absolutely no issues. She actually can tank decent enough for short periods of time if things get out of hand - she's not too squishy. She also seems to put out more damage than T7 so I keep her around.

I'm really looking forward to trying Doc out though. Hoping he gives me that boost I need to start soloing heroic 2's.

  4. Granted we're different specs (I'm tank) but I open on standard mobs with:

Throw Saber > Leap > Opportune Strike > Bladestorm > Force Sweep > Pommel Strike > Master Strike. That leaves me with a ton of Focus left over to just slash down whatever is left.

  5. Just open up the side skillbars in your preferences tab. At 37 I find a use for all the abilities. Some more than others, but they all get used frequently. If you absolutely have to remove abilities I suppose Force Might could come off since you only drop that once an hour in PvE, but even then I say just organize your bars better.
  6. Just dinged 34 or 35 and really felt I turned a corner. I've been tank spec the entire time and up until recently felt like I was not getting much out of the spec. I'd occassionally swap to Shii-Cho and not really notice a huge drop in my survivability against mobs.

At around 34ish though things changed. Some of the higher tier abilities and acquiring the mob clearing strikes (Pommel Strike, Opportune Strike) have really allowed me to start buzzsawing through mobs. I like the absorption from Blade Barrier and the stun from Hilt Strike is very nice as an added interrupt. I just fought a Sith Sorceror in one of the story missions and I completely locked him down with Kick, Force Push, Stasis, Charge and Hilt Strike. I also like how easy it is to find a group.

That being said, if I were to do it again I'm pretty sure I'd level as dps just to clear mobs faster.

  7. I'm kind of scratching my head at a lot of these posts. Not saying I'm the greatest by any means but I haven't had an issue at all from level 1 up to where I'm at now (about to ding 30). I've been tank spec from the beginning and ran with T7 until I got Kira and then swapped for her higher dps (though sometimes I wish I'd stuck with the droid). My gear isn't anything super special - I have a couple of oranges, some blues, and a few filler pieces of greens.

For normal groups I just charge in, drop a free Bladestorm, chop their armor up with Sunder Strike and mix in some normal attacks with Master Strikes. For Gold enemies I have to use Saber Ward and occasionally Warding Call. If I don't want to use a health pack and am getting slammed I pop our 20 minute Call on the Force and with that basic set up I've piled through the content. My only gripe is that my damage feels a bit low but it's not too bad.

I have not tried the DPS spec yet and have definitely been itching to but tank spec has been fun so I'm sticking with it.

  8. While they're still both relatively low level (in their late teens) I've got both a Vanguard and a Commando. I absolutely loved the Trooper class right up until I specced Commando at which point the class lost all luster to me. After restarting and choosing Vanguard I fell back in love with the class and am cooking with gas.

The big difference for me was the playstyle. While the Commando can absolutely ream mobs in jaw-dropping fashion for me it just wasn't as fun as Vanguard. I'd just run in, hit Hail of Bolts (AoE blaster fire) two or three times and drop a group of mobs then move on. It was super simple and the main thing I was disliking was I lost the dynamic of mixing the ranged with the melee. I originally chose Commando because as stated in the OP they have heals, high dps and heavy armor, but what I've noticed, heard and read is that the heavy armor doesn't really account for much defense. I did enjoy the healing aspect and would prefer to heal over tank for a secondary role, but again actually playing the character was far less fun.

The Vanguard on the other hand is a blast. You still have a healthy assortment of ranged attacks but you follow them up with smashing your opponent in the face with the butt of your gun, frying him with an ion/electrical blast and gutting him with your knife. The combination of ranged and melee is just more interesting to me than sitting back turret-firing.

  9. I'm level 25 currently and have spent the entire time as Defense spec. I'm not hating it, but I'm also not loving it. I feel like my damage is rather gimp. Would it be better to swap over to Vigilance, Focus, or stay Defense for a few more levels? I've just found that without Kira my overall damage is pretty pathetic.
