there are items (almost the best items ingame) that are only usable if u skilled the matching craftingskill. (reusable meds and stims, relics)

as i just obtained my magenta kristall i can tell, it isnt really worth it unless you roll a female toon. its pink and nowhere near the great looking purple sabers. but still a nice adventure to get it
