I'm sorry, but this is simply not true. Grand Fantasia has been using this system for years. You start with a "companion" at character creation and it gains experience and levels as you do. You can equip it with weapons and armor and it will fight along side you. It has a friendship or mood meter that you have to keep an eye on, and can improve it by giving your companion gifts. You also gain new companions as you level up, each with different skills and abilities.
As far as the crafting goes, you pay a small amount of gold to send your companion out to gather resources for crafting, which has a percentage chance to succeed or fail. Once you have enough materials, you can send your companion out to craft the items that you want, all while you are out doing your quests.
What we have is a prettier version, a more polished version, but not an innovative one. This system has been done before, so by definition is not an innovation.
