Smugglers and bounty hunters could do it because they work for the highest bidder but that's an argument for being loyal as well. I think mostly after everything with the eternal empire, I don't see a reason to stay with the republic at all personally, but it's boring to pick the same option on every character, so I'm looking for some reasons to align with the republic.
