Keistown
Hi fellow Vanguards! I have some problems while questing with my Trooper Vanguard, level around 38, currently on planet Hoth. 1. My damage is very low and I feel like I'm scratching my enemies (PvE, except situation I have ready my Mortar Barrage). 2. If I use DPS companion I die on group with one silver npc. Damage is better but I lack healing from Healer (Dorne). So only one way to live is use her. But she does nearly to none dmg and lvling is painfully slow. My gear is mainly blues, lvl 35-38 and I'm specced Assault specialist. I'm using Ion cell to be more "tough" but it doesnt help alot. Am I doing something wrong? Or lvling as a tank should be slow? Scrump
I am leveling in shield spec with 0 problems, even solo'd a platinum star boss on balmorra yesterday. I use my healing companion and just stock strike everything to death!
cptnMorgan
That skill is only good for the sheild spec tree. That tree gives it more damage potential. Also for the spec you are using make sure you are using a generator in your off hand and not a sheild to give your attacks more power. Ion Cell is basically to improve the sheild effect and increas defence. As the assault spec you don't want that typically you need the extra damage from plasma cell i beleive. Scrump
I also learned yesterday that if you don't plan on leveling in a group and prefer to fly solo it is extremely important to give your companions GOOD gear. Not just your left over trash. I finally geared out Elara (the healer) last night and i was soloing gold stars EASY. Her bonus healing almost doubled! I am also cybertech and did the same thing with my nar shadaa tank droid (M1-3x?) and he is just as good a tank as I am now, for the most part anyway. So keep that in mind while adventuring
Keistown
Thank you for you thoughts, I am currently using Ion cell + shield. I'll try to get generator and switch for Plasma cell.
aRtFuL
For soloing there is really hardly any survivability difference between using ion cell or plasma cell. Assault specialist should really use plasma cell all the time besides for some situations in pvp or heroics. Plasma cell's is really a lot more powerful for assault specs because spamming ion pulse will keep fire dot on target all the time, plus the dot also slows the target movement as well as have more damage with assault spec which allows you to dot kite stronger mobs. WLpride
if you have problems with class.. i really don't know. You have really crappy gear or something.. spec to damage and crit, use a shield on offhand. that's it. use pull in huttball to pull enemies into fire/acid etc. use freeze to do the same thing. Kivrin
So much of the assault tree buffs plasma cell. Why would you put points into that and not use it? The other option would be respec to shield spec, if you'd rather keep using Ion Cell. One way or another, make sure you use the abilities the talent tree is actually affecting, otherwise it's a waste. That + good gear and your damage should be fine. I keep her gear up to date but the game shouldn't be about gearing your companion out the ***. they should scale it better with decent armor that any fool can get. Razaz
Im plaing commando, but using Elara always. And she heals like crazy. Equipped her wth gear from Taral V and Maelstrom prison(there are nice healer drops). And she is able to heal me on 2+ heroics with ease. Try to check her stance. maybe you changed it to DPS accidently.
Keistown
Ok so, I'm lvl 41 now. I bought full PVP set for lvl 40, so I have fine gear for my lvl. Class mission Gauntlet - game don't let me use Dorne for healing, and I'm dying on every group with silver mob .... I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong Im plaing commando, but using Elara always. And she heals like crazy. Equipped her wth gear from Taral V and Maelstrom prison(there are nice healer drops). And she is able to heal me on 2+ heroics with ease. Try to check her stance. maybe you changed it to DPS accidently. Questing with Elara is fine, she can overheal mob's damage. Tho It's very painfull, because she does nearly to none dmg. HibashiraSakai
It might be time to get into the details. Example: A pack of 3 mobs, all strong (silver). What do you do?
Keistown
Pack of silver + two normals Companion attacks silver, he does most dmg. And I try to help him zerg as fast as possible. Sticky grenade, Incendiary round, High impact, then full auto Im trying to use Hi impact and Full auto on every cooldown I was forced to use Yunn as companion. And when second silver mob came I died. Also, I was using all cooldowns like reactive shield, recharge and adrenaline rush. I went over this painfull experience and now I continue to lvl up with my Gunslinger mate and Its ok. But every time I have to solo something Its terrible. edit: and same story on A-77 ... second silver mob and Im dead vanguard. monimoni
Join a guild and level with a group. It's more fun anyway.
Wonca
I'm not quite that high of level yet (currently lvl 30 Vanguard/Shield Spec). Some general things that you may want to take into account.. 1) Are you using stims and healing medpacks? 2) Have you upgraded your barrel (or your rifle)? 3) Are you spamming AoE's? I would suggest taking out the trash mobs first and then focusing on the silver. Edited December 29, 2011 by Wonca
Utilitybill
Hate to jump in here, but full auto sucks as assault, and should only be used as a filler when everything else is down Your assault priority should be stock strike and HIB on cool down, keep your burn dots up with Ion pulse and incidentally round. Fill it out with full auto and your hammer shots. Assault is the only tree that requires you to use the associated cell to be any good. If you are specced into assault and don't have your plasma cell running, you're wasting too many talent points. If you want a nice blend of both worlds, try this Tatical Assault Build: http://db.darthhater.com/skill_calc/trooper/vanguard/#::fe6fe4fefef3ef20e2fefefe2f4e2f2
Dersu
I am leveling as an Assault Vanguard also and have no such issues mate. I usually use M1-4X as a tank and unless I really f*** up a pull or forget to heal up after a fight, I rarely have any problems. For really tough fights I will switch to "pseudo tank mode" i.e ion cell, high threat abilities and use Elara as healer (switching off her offensive abilites). Not using plasma cell and being specced as an assault Vanguard is asking for trouble though mate. It seriously reduces your damage by making HIB proc less frequently and reducing your DoT from the plasma cell.
