KOTOR: it's Unreal!

Guess what!

I know, I know, it isn't about SW VII like half the other threads, but something fun and new is starting. The original KOTOR is being rebuilt in the unreal engine 4, getting more modern graphics/playability for one of our favorite games... Looks neat, now we'll have to wait and see.

Not going to happen. Too big of a goal for an idie group. The problem with indie groups, is that they aim way too high. In my opinion, most fans just want KOTOR to have new graphics, everything else, like new content, new voice overs, is not really needed. Edited by cool-dude

That mod team is going to need a license or some special permission to go through with it.

The internet's VideoGameAttorney weighed in on this

No, the KOTOR fan-project is not legal. Sorry, folks!

I normally stick over in /r/gamedev for legal advice (minus the recent YouTube controversies), but a lot of you pinged me on this post. and I felt it deserved a broader answer.

These fan projects are not "okay" or "absolutely" legal. They are quite the opposite, and there's a near zero percent chance this project sees the light of day. It's frustrating seeing people like this saying they want to take donations, yet basing their entire backing on nonsensical legal beliefs. For example, Black Mesa Source is a game made by a client of mine who has a license to make it.

Fan projects are infringing. That's it. End of story. This is not okay, and neither is the one that pops up next week. No license, no game.

Just call it Cosmic Battles : Crusaders of the Ancient Commonwealth, and change the name of every character, object and location.

Starring Dark Raven, Bastille Shen, Kurt Ansari, and CK-47
