Your new name will update everywhere your old name used to be. If you're looking to disappear, your only options are to delete and re-make the character or transfer off, rename, and transfer back. In fact, a simple transfer off and back will let you keep your name (assuming no one takes it) but remove you from friends lists. It only costs 180cc to do it this way.
