First off almost all hand decapitations amongst jedi a handguard wouldn't have stopped it. Anakin, mace, dooku, etc has the lightsaber beam come under the arm. Even if there's a handguard it wouldn't stop it. Plus.. it wasn't designed that way because it's superior. According to Disney the lighsaber is the way it is because it's an ancient design before lightsabers become as functional as they are. Basically, Kylo Ren's lightsaber is shoddy and primitive. FrostyTide Posted December 25, 2015 Share Posted December 25, 2015 Also I'm pretty sure that the "handguard"/"cross guard" is like an exhaust port almost for the saber since he did use some ancient or more powerful design, not sure about the design part, but he also used an unstable crystal to make it so makes sense for it to need exhaust ports to get rid of excess energy.
