Is New York City safe for tourists?

Like any sufficiently large and diverse real-world city, an ecumenopolis like Nar Shaddaa, Coruscant or Denon is quite likely to have safe, well-lit and prosperous areas as well as seedy, dangerous slums.

It just depends where you go.

Nar Shaddaa is probably safe if you stay to the well-known areas and employ a local guide. Hutts are vicious but they wouldn't want to cut into their own profits by making the planet so unsafe that no one comes there to be fleeced at the casinos etc.

Ofc, getting sold into slavery to cover gambling debts could happen - but it should be rare and preventable if the Hutts still think straigth.

Man: "I want your finest pleasure barge, with a stock of your highest-quality spirits, spit-polished!"

Aide: "Consider it done, sir."

Man: "And slaves! Fifty- no, a hundred! Twi'leks only! I like Twi'leks."

Aide: "As you wish, sir. You made the right choice in celebrating your birthday on Nar Shaddaa."

That's an actual (heavily paraphrased) conversation you can run into on the Promenade, just beside the statue of Karagga the Hutt. I hope that answers your question. :D

Yes, the Hutts may be a criminal cartel but it is in the Hutts best interests to keep it safe for tourists. They'd want the tourists spending money in their hotels, casinos, shops, restaurants, brothels, ect. Tourists getting attacked or mugged and scaring away other visitors would be bad for business.

I would imagine that that street criminals that prey on tourists would run the risk of angering the Hutts and making targets of themselves.

I suppose the closest real world comparison would be Prohibition era speakeasies. A criminal mugging patrons on their way in or out of one of Al Capone's speakeasies would probably run the risk of ended up floating in the Chicago River.
