How effective is putting a referral link in a signature?

Well, I've gotten a few hits on mine (thank you folks!) and I admit it serves as an incentive for me to stay subbed to keep getting all those 100 CC/month, LOL!

 

And I'm sure some of those F2P'rs who try a sub for 7-days get hooked on it (especially with the 12XP perk).

I'd say very. I started doing it a few months ago, and I've netted probably close to 100K CCs. I had the mount and all the pet rewards in under a week.
