Powertech Playstyle

I am a new player of a few days and have chosen Bounty Hunter as my first character to play the game through. For better or worse I have chosen Powertech as my spec.

I am completely confused about how I am supposed to play it. My ranged damage (I am level 15) seems very low compared to my melee abilities. Is powertech supposed to focus on the melee side of things?

What tree should I put my initial points in?

Shameless self promotion but meh. I think it answers the question without going into debate about what powertech playstyle is:

PTs are hybrid melee/medium range - aim is to kite melee but to gap close on ranged. You differ your playstyle and your cooldowns depending on whether you are vsing melee or ranged. Good luck. Level in pyro.

P.S subscribe to my channel. 100 subs and I make a new vid (8 to go! :D)

Better to promote a good player than a bad one. Koozie know's his stuff. Check his videos out, he has some helpful tips in there, even if you don't PvP.

You play outside of melee until Rocket Punch is ready, move in, punch and move out, so 4m - 10m. You are single target focused and can DPS or tank. You enjoy keeping your target slowed and use DoT's to kill as well as direct damage. You wear the heaviest armor in the game and have a selection of defensive cool-downs to manage.

If played well you will receive hate messages after each WarZone from your foes, people absolutely hate being permanently slowed, pulled and frequently punched in the face for triple digit numbers. Achieving about 2xx crit rating and then going all out power, your foe will melt causing massive nurd rage...

You have chosen one of the most powerful advanced classes in this game, enjoy.

I leveled my Advanced Prototype tree until I got Retractable Blade then put some points into the Tank tree for added survivability.

The strategy I like using on Powertech: I fire a Sticky Grenade and use the basic blaster shots while closing the distance to the target. Rocket Punch, Retractable Blades followed by Rail Shot. A couple of Flame Bursts followed by longer Flame Thrower attack. For tougher opponents, I add Unload and another Sticky Grenade (or whatever that's called for BH instead of Trooper).

I haven't maxed any toon yet, but I feel Powertech and Vanguard could use a kick attack. A Roundhouse kick with a short Knockdown would be awesome and make sense for a close-combat specialist.

For survivability, I pop the Shield power when 1/3 to 1/4 health is down. I usually pop a Medkit if health continues to drop. Kolto Overload when I'm under 1/2. Throw in the Stun move followed by Rail Shot to buy some time and "free" damage.

I usually use Mako as my companion. I'm sort of lazy.
