Ranks of the Republic & Imperial Military

Greetings all.

Since the game seems to be generalizing and somewhat vague about the ranks of both enlisted and officers within the Republic and Imperial military chain-of-command, I did a bit of speculation and research. In the end, I came up with a listing of ranks for both factions that seems to fit within the few bits of data the game has given us.

NOTE! These are just speculation and in no way is it meant that BioWare/EA has set these as the actual ranks in the game. I did figure this would be a good suggestion for the Devs to help flesh out anything they may have in the works, as well as help any player who's RPing as either a Trooper or Agent.

With that said, here's my list. Enjoy!

My understanding is that Moff, Grand Moff, and Under Moff are all titles more than Ranks. Meaning that they are more akin to Governor than Admiral. Granted with the Imperial story line all citizens are in the military, but that doesn't mean that they are going by their rank, and in this case I would assume that it wasn't or else the Under Moff for Makeb would have been giving either the regular Moff title instead of a new one being made just for him.

The Old Republic Encyclopedia gives a list of ranks for the Republic and Imperial Armed Forces. They're rather similar and there's a chance there are more ranks and titles between them, but these are the most official listings I could find. And the fact that they're listed in two columns in the book means my ordering might be wrong.

Republic Army Ranks

-General

-Colonel

-Major

-Captain

-Lieutenant

-Ensign

-Sergeant

-Corporal

-Specialist

-Private

Republic Navy Ranks

-Admiral

-Commodore

-Group Captain

-Captain

-Lieutenant

-Ensign

-Petty Officer

-Corporal

-Specialist

-Private

The Supreme Commander is the highest ranking military official in the Republic. They advise the Senate and the Supreme Chancellor in military decisions, and are responsible for the direction of the Republic's Generals and Admirals whenever a new plan in enacted.

'Commander' is not an official rank, but a title bestowed upon anyone in a position of command. It's become tradition to use the title as an honorific for combat officers who have demonstrated superior leadership over the course of a long service career, worthy of respect regardless of their actual rank or current position.

Imperial Army Ranks

-General

-Colonel

-Major

-Captain

-Lieutenant

-Ensign

-Sergeant

-Corporal

-Specialist

-Private

Imperial Navy Ranks

-Admiral

-Commodore

-Group Captain

-Captain

-Lieutenant

-Ensign

-Petty Officer

-Corporal

-Specialist

-Private

Moffs are officers above both generals and admirals who have authority over both infantry and naval forces. The Grand Moff is the most decorated of these officers and is considered more of an honorary title since it doesn't hold intrinsic special privileges, but they often develop closer ties to the Dark Council and are given the freedom to pursue their own objectives due to their prestige. Both the Moffs and the Grand Moff report directly to the Minister of War.

Bonus bit of information regarding Imperial Organizational Units:

-Assault Group: 40,000+ troops

-Division: 20,000-40,000

-Brigade: 5,000-7,500

-Battalion: 700-1,500

-Company: 100-300

-Platoon: 50-100

-Squad: 5-10

-Fire Team: 2-3

Assault Groups are special formations created to carry out important large-scale operations under the command of a Moff or high-ranking Sith Lord. Once the operation is complete, the Assault Group is broken up into ordinary division-level assignments.

Osetto -- The problem I have with that listing is the fact both Enlisted and Officer ranks have been lumped together. Plus the fact they're (again) being too generalized and vague with the total spread of ranks between them. It doesn't make sense to jump from Major to Colonel (O3 grade to O5), as there has to be an intermediate rank in there. Commander as an "honorary" title... I can see unit members calling their C.O. Commander, but the actual rank has to be there. It just makes sense to me.

Aside from the fact I know they've skipped several ranks for the enlisted. It has been confirmed that the Republic does have a Sergeant 1st Class (E7), as Elara Dorne in the Trooper story confirms this when she introduces herself to your character.

Plus, as the Republic and Imperial Navies both clearly stemmed from traditional "Wet" Navies, it doesn't make sense to have Private and Corporals in their ranks. The logical titles would either be Seaman or Starman (though Bill Baldwin -- author of the Helmsman series, a well done space opera fiction -- uses Starman or Starsailor almost exclusively).

Of course there may be more inbetween there, but there are several unique ones.

I'm going to be one of those people whom respond to a post that is years out of date, but anywho.

Considering the timeline of the game currently, as far as the Imperial military is concerned, I see it as reasonable that a reform in the ranks would have occurred. The list given by Bioware is not only vague, but the Imp ranks pretty much mirror those of the Republic witj few exceptions which, to me, does not make sense.

So the system the guilds I have been in for the Republic use the modern day U.S. Army or Marine Corps rank structure. For Empire, my guild uses the British Army rank scale. To show what these systems look like:

SITH EMPIRE - IMPERIAL ARMY

Minister of War

Grand Moff

Moff

Surface Marshall (this is a Galactic Empire rank)

General

Lieutenant General

Major General

Brigadier General

Colonel

Lieutenant Colonel

Major

Captain

Lieutenant

Second Lieutenant

ENLISTED

Warrant Officer I (or Sergeant Major dependant on career path)

Warrant Officer II (same as above)

Colour Sergeant

Sergeant

Corporal

Lance Corporal

Private

IMPERIAL NAVY

Grand Moff / Moff

Fleet Admiral

Admiral

Vice Admiral

Rear Admiral

Commodore

Captain

Commander

Lieutenant-Commander

Lieutenant

Sub-lieutenant

Ensign

ENLISTED RANKS

Warrant Officer I

Chief Petty Officer

Petty Officer

Leading Crewman

Able Crewman

Crewman

REPUBLIC ARMY RANKS

Supreme Commander

General

Lieutenant General

Major General

Brigadier General

Colonel

Lieutenant Colonel

Major

Captain

First Lieutenant

Second Lieutenant

ENLISTED

Command Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major

First Sergeant / Master Sergeant

Sergeant First Class

Staff Sergeant

Sergeant

Corporal / Specialist

Private First Class

Private

Private (recruit)

REPUBLIC MARINES (if you choose to go with it)

General

Lieutenant General

Major General

Brigadier General

Colonel

Lieutenant Colonel

Major

Captain

First Lieutenant

Second Lieutenant

ENLISTED

Sergeant Major / Master Gunnery Sergeant

First Sergeant / Master Sergeant

Gunnery Sergeant

Staff Sergeant

Sergeant

Corporal

Lance Corporal

Private First Class

Private

REPUBLIC NAVY

Admiral

Vice Admiral

Rear Admiral (Upper Half)

Rear Admiral (Lower Half)

Captain

Commander

Lieutenant Commander

Lieutenant

Lieutenant Junior Grade

Ensign

ENLISTED RANKS

Master Chief Petty Officer

Senior Chief Petty Officer

Chief Petty Officer

Petty Officer First Class

Petty Officer Second Class

Petty Officer Third Class

Crewman

Crewman Apprentice

Crewman Recruit

Spaceman can be used interchangeably with Crewman. Though I believe Crewman sounds better, but if you want you want to keep to the logic of "Seaman" becoming "Spaceman," that's cool too.

Like I said, for the Republic ranks that is what guilds have gone with that I've been in and it makes sense since the Republic is supposed to be Space 'Merica. With the Empire, my guild uses the British ranks with some Galactic Empire ranks thrown in because they're Space Brits. The reason for the inclusion of Galactic Empire ranks (such as Surface Marshall) is because the Galactic Empire uses an amalgam of British military ranks and circa-WWII German military ranks.

And, as we all know, the Sith Empire are Space Nazis.

Space Nazis with a British accent.

Brazis.

Anywho. That is what I go with and it works. I believe it makes the most sense and is a lot less vague and, also, adds a longer track of progression for members of the military to climb.
