An in-depth look at: The World Devastators

"This is the greatest scourge the galaxy has ever seen... Far more lethal than the Death Star!"- Admiral Gial Ackbar

Emperor Palpatine's vision for the military was based on three simple elements: terrifying weapons to make dissidents cower in fear, swarms of Star Destroyers and Starfighters to annihilate all who would resist, and massive factories and shipyards to power his war machine. The World Devastators were the terrifying amalgamation of these simple rules.

The Devastators were designed in the Maw Installation by the Master of Imperial Projects Umak Leth. They were designed to house the Empire's new molecular furnace technology that was inspired by hyperspace vortices. Raw materials went in to the furnace to be converted into energy. The energy was then routed to droid and vehicle factories to craft whatever the Empire needed.

World Devastators operated in small fleets to spread across a planet. Their first targets were large cities. The Devastators literally chewed through a planet's surface, destroying anything in their path. Whatever remained would be brought into the Devastator and turned into whatever material was needed to construct vehicles or automated starfighters.

World Devastators were more than capable of defending themselves against attacks. They were armed with heavy turbolaser cannons, ion cannons, heavy blaster cannons, and proton torpedo tubes. The droid brain of each Devastator was programmed to be able to alter its own structure. During attacks, a World Devastators powerful tractor beams would rip out chunks of the planet and feed them to the molecular furnaces. The Devastator would then build extra hull plating and more weapons to expand itself.

The largest of the World Devastators was General Titus Klev's Silencer-7, a massive machine measuring thirty-two hundred meters long and fifteen hundred meters tall. It carried one hundred and twenty-five heavy turbolasers, two hundred blaster cannons, eighty proton torpedo tubes, fifteen ion cannons, and fifteen tractor beam projectors.

World Devastators were designed to take tremendous amounts of punishment. Defense fleets fell before them. In the end, the only thing that could stop a World Devastator was another World Devastator.

The greatest flaw of the World Devastators was the Reborn Emperor's paranoia. Palpatine equipped the World Devastators with a remote command system under his control to prevent ambitious Admirals from overthrowing him. Luke Skywalker provided the codes to R2-D2, who then completely disabled the World Devastators on Mon Calamari and turned them against each other.

Not as devastating as the Death Star or the Eclipse sisters, but the World Devastators are powerful war machines in their own right.
