Is Predation better than Berserk for a top geared Annihilation Marauder in PvP?

So this is my theory: a top geared Annihilation Marauder has 56% crit chance with DoTs (30% from stats, 5% from class buff, 15% from Juyo, and 6% from Malice). So mathematically speaking, the DoTs crit more than half of the times.

When Berserk is used, it makes the next 6 DoTs a 100% chance to crit. However, mathematically, we actually only get 3 DoTs crit from using Berserk, because we have 56% chance of critting with DoTs anyway, which means that 3 out of the 6 DoT crits from Berserk would have crit anyway.

The other benefit of using Berserk is self-heal. 6 DoT crit from berserk is 12% HP heal. 3 regular DoT crit is 3% HP heal. So the difference here is 9%. Assuming that the Marauder has 20k HP, 9% of 20k is 1800; so the Marauder heals for 1800 more with Berserk. 6% HP heal also goes to 3 other party members. Assuming that they also have 20k HP; 6% of 20k is 1200.

So mathematically, the benefit of Berserk for a Marauder with 56% crit chance Dots are 3 more Dot crits and about 1800 more HP heal, and 1200 HP heal to party members.

Now compare this benefit from Berserk to Predation. Predation gives 50% extra movement speed and 10% extra melee and range defense to entire raid (8 people). Extra speed allows the team’s melee to stick to their targets better, and allows the team’s range to kite enemy melee better, which is a huge benefit to skilled players, especially those are good with strafing.

Then there is extra 10% defense chance benefit. This boosts all 8 team members’ defense chance to 15%, and 20% for Assassins and Sorcerers. With 15% defense chance, the ally can defend 1 melee/range attack every 7 attacks, which takes about 10.5 second of global cool down to execute. This means that during Predation’s 10 second buff, the ally should at least successfully defend against 1 melee/range attack per attacker, assuming the attacker uses only melee/range attacks. With 20% defense chance, the ally can defend 1 melee/range attack every 5 attacks, which takes about 7.5 seconds of global cool down to execute, so the ally should at least successfully defend against 1 melee/range attack per attacker during 10 seconds of Predation buff, also assuming the attacker uses only melee/range attacks. This defense benefit goes up similarly if the ally spec into increasing defense talents, like Assassin hybrids.

At 50 PvP, one melee/ranged attack easily does about 1.5k damage, except the default attack. So defending against even 1 melee/range attack easily beats Berserk’s 1200 healing to the team. The defense bonus’ benefit also increases as the ally is being focus fire, which is often the case for healers. Since the classes with highest burst in the game are Marauders and Snipers, who use mainly melee/range attacks, and they are the ones that go after healers most often, the defense bonus from Predation helps them more significantly than Berserk’s heal.

Now comparing the benefits of Berserk and Predation for a top geared Annihilation Marauder, using Predation would benefit the team and the Marauder more than using Berserk.

Both.

It's quite simple actually. You will pretty much always want to use Predation in group scenarios, best examples being Voidstar and Huttball, for obvious reasons.

And in the other WZs it can often benefit you more than Berserk as well, even in 1vX situations - You have to decide for yourself which yields better results in any given moment, e.g. : Do 'I' benefit more from the selfheals or the guaranteed crits that could give me the edge I need or do I want the extra MS and Defense for being harder to kill and almost "unkitable" for some classes.

In the end it all comes down to the situation you're in but nevertheless you will be using both a lot.
