abagheri
Other than doing side quests, flashpoints, heroic missions, and saving my $, how can I get better gear?
Amien
I'm afraid there is no other way. You can spend the money on crafted gear, or spend the money leveling up YOUR crafting. FP's will give you the best gear for your level PvP also has a level 20 and level 40 orange set.

Gidrea
Assuming you're still leveling up, get orange gear as soon as you can and use your planetary comms for upgraded armorings and mods. Orange gear drops or is offered as a quest reward occasionally, or you can buy it on the GTN.
Zunayson
You can craft gear? How? On your map, hit the Crew Skill Trainer button filter. If you click on all of them, they will ask you if you want to learn it. hit no. Do this for all of them, and you'll get a Codex entry. To open your Codex, hit L and on the bottom tab of the window that popped up, hit "Codex". read the description of each crew skill, then find the other skills that complement them; There are crafting skills to turn materials into products; you may only learn one at a time. There are mission skills to get materials; you may learn as many as you want. You can get the materials by running the missions they give you. There are gathering skills to get materials; you may learn as many as you want. You can get the materials by running the missions they give you, or gathering nodes in the world. The crafting skills are as follows: Biochem - Stims, Adrenals, Implants Cybertech - Mods, Armorings, Grenades, Droid parts, Earpieces Synthweaving - Armor for force users, all slots, augments for force users Artiface - Enhancements, hilts, weapons for force users, off hands (minus knives), color crystals. Armormech - Armor for non force users, all slots, augments for non force users Armstech - Weapons and offhands for non force users, augments for everyone (secondary stats), barrels. The mission skills are as follows: Underworld Trading - Metals, Companion Gifts, Luxury Fabrics. Diplomacy - Medical Supplies, Companion Gifts, Schematics. Treasure Hunting - Gemstones, Companion Gifts. Slicing - Sliced Tech Parts, Companion Gifts, Lockboxes, Schematics. Investigation - Never taken this one, I think it's Schematics and Companion Gifts. Cannot confirm. The Gathering skills are as follows: Bioanalysis - Medical Samples and Compounds Archaeology - Power Crystals and Color Crystals (Not the Color Crystals made by Artiface) Scavenging - Metals and Compounds (Not the compounds from bioanalysis) Note: First, decide what you want to make. If you take Armormech, for example, decide whether or not you want to make armor or augments. If you want to make armor, take Underworld Trading. If you want to make augments, take slicing. Scavenging is a must-have no matter what. Most people suggest Biochem; if you want to have expensive, updated gear and full sets of it, take cybertech. If you want to update your gear in small, staggered steps, take armormech/Synthweaving. If you want to update very few things, take any of the ones not aforementioned. Elyx
You can craft gear? How? Press "n" on your keyboard. opens up your companion menu. If you have picked up crafting skills, they'll be shown there. on most planets there are crafting areas where you can choose your craft skills. Id go into details, but theres guides in the crafting forum that would do a better job. Basically, you choose one actual craft, like synthweaving (for making force weilders armor), armsman (makes guns and tech weapons), and biotech (makes implants and stim boosts). Each craft skill will require materials usually farmed with a gathering skill. synthweaving as an example, requires crystal and srtifact fragments to weave the armor necessary for force weilders. there are also Mission craft skills...these mission skills will send yoru companions out on mini "missions", and return with rare materials to craft the more powerful items you can make.
