Republic Seal Used by Imperium

Strictly speaking, it is not the very same seal, but it bears a far stronger resemblance to the Republic Seal than the sigil they are showing us as the Republic Seal. What the heck is up with this?

I know it's 3000 years before Skywalker. But we are told that the Republic is 20,000 years old, with a presumably uninterrupted legacy for that entire period. In episodes 4-6, the Galactic Empire was usurped by Darth Sidious from the old Galactic Republic. Naturally he kept everything the way it was because he was "saving the galaxy from the evil jedi," and that includes using the Republic Seal. In episodes 1-3, we see that very same seal because this was the Republic that became the Empire. It stands to reason that 3000 years ago, we should still see the same Republic Seal, but... instead it's the seal of the Sith Empire, and it's not even the same exact design.

If we extend this reasoning, then, somehow, the Sith Empire will become the Galactic Republic so that it will be consistent with what we see at the beginning of episode 1 in 3000 years' time, and as such it will use the Jedi Order to preserve peace and justice for the Republic, because the Sith are avid supporters of peace and justice and love the Jedi Order and everything that it represents.

I was under the impression that Darth Sidious wanted revenge upon the Jedi. Why? Presumably because the Republic defeats the Sith Empire and destroys every last Sith, except for one or two escapees who vow revenge upon the Jedi for destroying the Sith civilization, though it takes them a thousand years or so to make good on the promise finally with Darth Sidious. What possible circumstance could result in the Republic choosing to use the Sith Empire's seal as a basis for their own, let alone abandon their own seal that has millenia of history behind it?

Does anyone have a possible explanation for this other than design error?

The Symbol you're referring to is one used by the Bendu Monks

A form of it was originally used by the Republic, but then the Empire adopted a form of it for their crest, which appears to be a combination of the symbol, and the Old Sith Imperial Emblem of the golden age and Revan's day. After the war, much of Imperial Culture and Technology was assimilated into the republic. for thousands of years the Republic used the bendu wheel, up until the rise of palpatine where he adopted the Imperial Emblem ,a call back to the Sith Imperial version of it, while keeping the bendu wheel. and restoring a great deal of forgotten Sith culture in the guise of his "New Order" Persisting throughout the Galactic And Second Galactic Empire's time. The New Republic and Rebel Alliance though, never switched back due to the connotations of the now hated symbol, and adopted entirely the Rebel Starbird, which is based on an Old Jedi emblem.
