Assault Commando: Need advice for dealing with Powertechs

The only way for a commando to deal with a powertech is to die faster so you can go back and help your team :)

I havent lost a 'duel' with a commando since my first war hero piece.

that would matter if 1v1 combat meant anything in this game.

best way to beat a powertech is to focus fire. the game is based on team play, might as well take advantage of having a team.

Cleanse has a cooldown that's longer than a powerpyro's gc.

Yes, but any good Pyro/Assault will want to avoid the cheap Ion Pulse early because it could proc our High Impact Bolt reset before we've used our initial (reset-free) HIB so that we can drop two HIBs in three GCDs.

The ability that lets us HIB without risking a premature HIB proc (Incendiendary Round) costs 3-ammo (as in 1/4 of our resources).

With a 4s cleanse, you either force us to put our backloaded AP first before re-applying IR or run us out of ammo quickly.

If you are cleansing on cool-down and still dropping, you are either very low level or are being hit by more than just an Assault/Pyro because we normally can't do more than 60% health before running out of momentum.

BTW, I'm not saying that this isn't OP, but for some reason I only rarely see my dots cleansed and those that do cleanse them tend to win.

The truth is, there's nothing you can do. Assault specialist is just so much better for vanguards, I think it was meant for them to use from the beginning. Vanguard has more utility than commando (aoe stun, pull, interrupt), their high impact bolt has 90% armor pen while commando has only 30%, and the specials they use to get the procs are all instant. There is no way you can beat a vanguard 1 vs 1 as an assault specialist commando, unless that vanguard is bad.

- cleanse

- heal if you have the range/time

- kick than lose los (hook inc!) on vertical maps (huttball/alderaan)

- mez and gain range or simply run away

- call for help, you do not need to win all 1vs1 encounters

Theres tons off good advice in this thread, and as you seem to be a good player judging on how you layed out your strengths and weaknesses in your post, you prolly will ignore all the bads and their "reroll" posts ;)

Listen to the folks in here and reroll, honestly.

My merc is almost valor 80, BM/WH geared and I've tried arsenal and pyro extensively for months. You can outplay it and put up big damage numbers but your utility, burst and survival remain a joke. A skilled player will double his value to a team by playing any class other than merc.

Also... I love that argument that some classes (generally the OP ones) are entitled to be dominant and balanced to win all 1v1 fights while some are apparently balanced to hide in the back of a group. I have news for you... yes, PTs die to focus fire quickly, but mercs die just as easily if not more easily to the same. Mercs will also still underperform PTs and other dps even when hiding in a group and ignored. How precisely is that balanced?

People honestly believe PvP can be balanced when three classes vastly outstrip others in a 1v1 environment? That would make sense only if the team with a PT or Marauder was forced to cap at 7 or 6 players instead of 8.

Everything should be balanced around 1v1, then team balance also inevitably falls into line.

Mercs are the counter to absolutely nothing right now.
