bootsakah Posted March 21, 2012 Share Posted March 21, 2012 I started out leveling my Vanguard with Tactics as it seemed to be the DPS tree. I switched over to Shield Specialist around level 22 and didn't notice a big drop in dps. Later on I switched back to Tactics (around lvl 45), and for sure it was more dps but I was also taking loads more damage. I never gave the Assault tree a look as it is obviously the pvp tree and I did not do any pvp. I liked going Shield Specialist so I could tank heroics and FP's. Plus I wanted to tank at end game so leveling up was a time to "learn the class". Once I got Elara (healer companion) I ran with her the whole time. It was definitely slower to kill mobs than when I leveled my Commando to 50, but the overall level was faster as I was skipping movies I already had seen and doing quests that I already knew. As far as skill spec's go it should be pretty obvious in the tree's what abilities increase damage, if you are looking to level fast. You just need to pick which tree looks most interesting to you. Switch a few times, try out the other spec's, it's either free or cheap to relearn your talents (so long as you aren't doing it often). Assault works quite well both for leveling and for PvP. Shield hybrids are fine and is fun using Charge (Tried Parakeet for couple of days, but the burst damage from Assault is needed to take down healers quickly in PvP). IMO vanguards (or trooper in general) are very easy to level. I hardly ever died while leveling as Assault+Elara. I did have biochem for the resusable heals/buffs as well. Unless I get dumb and/or ignore gear upgrades, I shouldn't die from regular PvE. But from about Lv38 onwards, the pace of going through NPCs has noticeably been taking painfully longer. I'd suppose Assault is faster overall vs the normal trash mobs, but most likely wouldn't be able to crush the elites in the heroics like shield does. Although even the thought of taking dmg scares me away from assult. I have never thought the tradeoff with Assault/Tactics was worth it. Sure you do more damage, and fights go a little quicker. But in my experience not nearly enough to give up the ability to solo Heroics. However, my playstyle does not mesh well with the Assault/Tactics builds. Others may have different experiences.
