If getting killed is your problem you most likely need elara dorne or better gear. Assault does more end game damage (theoretically). I leveled with tactics just fine. Its up close and personal. Could use more synergy between talents or talents to reset attacks so it didn't attack so predictably in pvp but I'm pretty satisfied for the most part. For lower-level Vanguards, it's IMHO better to lean towards Shield or Assault- Shield has it's own virtues, and you can have your HIB engine up and running with 18 talent points with Assault. Tactics is good, but takes the deepest investment to really get to that smoothly running, ammo efficient engine of destruction. That being said, not getting killed so much is a matter more of situational awareness. Talents increase how much punishment it takes, but getting your rotations and strategy down goes miles towards increasing your lifespan. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You can solo everything w/ Elara as companion accept Heroic 4's, 2's are a breeze, just gotta not pull more than 1 group at a time. Also, once your up into the 30's and 40's running flashpoints with a true tank gets to be more and more of a necessity so you shouldn't have any trouble finding groups. Once 50, decide what you want to be a Tank, DPS or PVP. PVE Tank: SS obviously. PVE DPS: Assault > Tactics PVP: Up to you, I find Tactics the best mix of DPS/Survivability/Utility but some like SS for gaurding and storm, others just like big DPS numbers and go full Assault. When I hit 50, I switched like 10 times between the specs to figure out which ones I liked. There is no "best," its what you like and what you are looking to do. You don't lose enugh DPS for it to matter, but you gain enough tanking to solo champs. Shield + Elara makes it very easy to level. PVE Tank: Shield /w tactics. 50 PVE DPS: 25 Assault/8/8 50 PVP Tank: 23 Shield (rest is up to you) 50 PVP DPS: 31 Assault. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Shield + Elara makes it very easy to level Alternatively, you can sit there as Assault and just kite those champions instead. It's more risky by some, but I feel the tradeoff in how quickly you burn through most stuff with a dual-DPS mode (Aric + Assault Vanguard) is quite rewarding. Pop your Reactive Shield for the initial burndowns of any escorts, then kite the big guy around while Aric's primary damage and you're LOS/kite tanking. Now, if you want to sit still and slug it out, Shield + Elara is optimal. But IMHO, it's a bit slower (and safer, admittedly). I do feel it's significant enough for me once I hit Ionic Accelerator and could burp out HIB's like mad on Assault or even before that when I could ranged-snare at will with Sweltering Heat.
